If you listen to local radio while on holiday abroad, why?

Maybe the wrong audience on Reddit but If you listen to local radio while on holiday abroad, why?. I can't understand why someone would want to listen to the five songs on repeat, an advert from a plumber 1261 miles away and accident updates?
PeaceLoveCurrySauce@reddit
I’m guessing this is in reference to the odd shoutout of “Jenny is in eyebeeza with the girls and wants to say keep the tunes coming”
They always baffle me
Double_Double7407@reddit
Why? Group who are on holiday and listening to music on the radio would like a request. Or is it just some weir classism going on?
PeaceLoveCurrySauce@reddit
How’s it classist
If you’re in ibiza, go out and enjoy yourselves, don’t sit in the hotel and listen to BBC Radio 1
Double_Double7407@reddit
people like listening to music. The radio plays music. Anything else while we're on? As for the "plumber 1261 miles away" comment - when you're at home do you phone a plumber whenever you hear the ad? Or do you call a plumber when you need a plumber?

This subreddit is so weird lately.

When you say "lately"...
Doragan@reddit
Your home local radio, or the radio local to where you currently are? Both are valid, but for different reasons
rockdecasba@reddit (OP)
Your local home radio
Doragan@reddit
You might genuinely like the show? Which is why you'd listen to it in the first place, I'd assume.
My wife and I used to listen to a long running breakfast show when we were away as we enjoyed listening to it?
GordonLivingstone@reddit
You mean local radio as in local to your home as opposed to local in the country where you are on holiday?
If it is your home country local radio then it would appear that you would rather be at home if it wasn't for the weather.
If it is your holiday destination, then probably you want to sample the local culture and find out what locals are listening to
235iguy@reddit
Sample the food yes but unless you listen to Spanish or whatever listening to the local radio other there makes less sense.
GordonLivingstone@reddit
Well, I rather like listening to the Spanish summer hits on holiday - makes me feel that I am really away from home.
I don't understand more than the odd word but that's OK!

I listen to BBC Sounds on long work trips. Mostly because it makes me feel less lonely in a foreign country.
On holiday, we'll sometimes put Radio 1 on just to have some music while drinking on a hotel balcony before heading to dinner or something like that.
I usually now travel with a little bluetooth speaker but am always mindful of my hotel neighbours when we're listening. We were staying next to a couple in Malaga last year and they would blast some horrid local radio every morning at like 8am on their balcony, it was awful.
Winston_Carbuncle@reddit
I can't imagine it's anything beyond "stick the radio on for some background noise" for 99.9% of people
I prefer to select my own music or podcasts but who honestly cares?
antimathematician@reddit
I believe this is referencing people are are listening to their home local radio while abroad. Which sounds incredibly British but I’ve never heard of it
VFrosty3@reddit
This is what I took from it too. My local BBC station will sometimes get messages come in along the lines of “This is Sandra and Bob, we’re listening in from sunny Costa Brava, and here’s what we think about your previous segment on pot holes…”
Winston_Carbuncle@reddit
Oh. I've definitely listened to radio 1 when abroad back in the day. Not quite local radio but I wouldn't have ever thought it was in any way strange
antimathematician@reddit
Oh radio 1 I get, if you’re a radio listener - makes more sense than radio in a language you don’t speak. But if it’s your small local station, I’ve had that on in the car and felt like I was losing the plot because they repeat so much, def wouldn’t be doing that on holiday.
anonynonnymoose@reddit
I'm always visiting Eastern European countries, love listening to all the hits from the 90s I'd forgotten about.
Nervous_Yard7034@reddit
Ok, you mean local radio from back home, don't you?
So, for example, someone in Málaga listening to North Norfolk Digital.
Intrigued what led you to ask the question.
Schmicarus@reddit
those songs can make the trip!
you may not like them so much at the time, or maybe you do, but either way you're making memories and they'll stay with you forever
Sarah-is-always-sad9@reddit
who listens to the radio, these days, by choice?
flangeflangeflanges@reddit
Me.
EyeAware3519@reddit
I never listen to radio at home but listening to the radio in a foreign country feels like you are immersing yourself in the local culture, even if you can't understand a word they are saying.
Terrible_Ad_7735@reddit
There is music on the radio. People like listening to music. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any follow up questions.
AirlineSevere7456@reddit
Don't think I've ever listened to the radio abroad, I'll check out the local TV stations in the hotel TV though.
ZestyMonstera@reddit
Because they like it
