I don't understand fashion anymore and it makes me feel old.

I've been interested in fashion basically all my life. I'm not someone who's followed every trend or even most, but I've enjoyed seeing what's cool and incorporating elements of it into my own style.
Reddit understands this and likes to show me a lot of content from "what outfit should I wear?" kind of subs and 80% of it is awful and the 20% that isn't awful is always the least popular.
I never respond to them because I don't tell other people what to wear even if they ask, but damn there is some ugly stuff out there being marketed as fashion.
(And yes, I know this is rich coming from someone raised in the 80s! I like to think I've learned from my mistakes. )
Ok_Ad3036@reddit
Solid color polos, ocbd shirts, jeans or khakis. Upgraded sneakers or casual leather shoes.
Stick to natural fabrics, blues, navy, greys, occasional pop of bright color. Keep it classic.
DPax_23@reddit
This is like every group of old people complaining about "kids these days" shaking fists at clouds.
It feels like golden corral dinner at 4pm in here sometimes.
The kids are fine. Old people are supposed to hate the way they dress. Thats how it works.
You think the boomers were in love with your parachute pants and pushed up Miami vice sleeves? A thousand years from now archeologists are going to spend decades trying to figure out why theres a billion non-biodegradable scrunchies just under the top soil wondering wtf a side ponytail could symbolize.

I keep seeing the help me choose my wedding dress for some reason and it looks like they’re all wearing under garments or they’re all see through.
zenmaster_B@reddit
I never cared. I dress the same way as I did 35 yrs ago— t-shirt or polo, shorts and birks or sperrys. I don’t wear cargo shorts anymore though, lol
scrollingranger@reddit
As far as I can see, the kids nowadays are dressing like us in the 90s!
ShartlesAndJames@reddit
I loved my boots and doc martins back in the day - but holy shit these frankenstein boots today
Legitimate_Cricket84@reddit
It basically just boils down to the cyclical nature of pant width. For a while, the good kind (narrow legs) are fashionable and then there’s the inevitable swing back to the horrible, horrible wide leg, flair, and bellbottoms style. You can give in or resist. I resist.
Oryx1300@reddit
Wide leg pants are the best and I was so happy to see skinny jeans die. Seriously probably the best fashion shift of my entire life. Everyone looks bad in skinny jeans and they are not comfortable at all.
tesyaa@reddit
I agree that the denim leggings look aka skinny jeans was a travesty
Legitimate_Cricket84@reddit
Even if you hate them, I hope we can all agree they are superior to stirrup pants from the 80s. At least skinny jeans don’t erase your ankles and make you look like an upside down bowling pin.
Me_Too_Iguana@reddit
At the height of the skinny jeans phase I couldn’t find bootcuts anywhere! I’m sooo happy they and wide leg are back. That said, skinny jeans do look good on some people. My sister and I are built really differently, and skinny (or straight at the most) jeans look great on her. I look ridiculous. Likewise, flared pants don’t suit her at all, but I rock them.
Legitimate_Cricket84@reddit
Growing up as a youth with New Wave and got sensibilities with heavily sympathetic attitudes towards 1960s mod style, it is pretty much imprinted upon me that wide legs and facial hair are not cool so I haven’t really gone that direction aside from a couple pairs of wider leg pants. I tried out in the 90s and decided were not for me. None of these rules are hard and fast anyway, most looks are highly dependent on body type and confidence and some combination of both. Do what you like, pull it off with confidence and you will be eternally stylish.
TheAmazingMaryJane@reddit
i love the wide leg pants. my legs look so much longer in them!
Legitimate_Cricket84@reddit
Well, it’s best to have your own style and if that’s how you like it go for it! Personally, I’m only doing it if it’s part of a Gumby costume. But some people can pull it off I guess.
Plus-Pin-9157@reddit
I stick to the classics, which may be a bit boring, but I don't like what's on trend right now. Definitely some ugly things trending but I'm sure our parents felt the same way about our stuff!
SkyRepresentative309@reddit
fashion can be trendy
but if you dive into style which is timeless and individual you may be able to renew your interest
my focus is vintage denim & military surplus and it's endless - especially when you look at japanese brands recreating it
ask yourself what got you into fashion to begin with? look for designers and brands with the same influences and taste as yours
TheCatWhoOvercame@reddit (OP)
My own style is pretty dialed at this point. I basically dress like an old hippie in the same stuff I've been wearing since I was in college: maxi skirts with solid tanks, throw a long-sleeve on top if it's cold. Sandals in summer, boots and tights in winter.
It's just odd to see so many trends that don't even a little bit appeal to me. Usually I can at least think, "in a hypothetical world where I'm 23 and single, I would totally wear that."
Legitimate_Cricket84@reddit
Having your style dialed in is the way to go! Mine is different, but it’s basically variations on the same fairly ridiculous outfit. I’ve gotten to the point where I have fitted jumpsuits custom-made and just accessorize with belts and shoulder pieces or bracelets, etc.
OE2KB@reddit
I’ve still got a green denim jacket with leather trim collar that I bought in 1986 at Banana Republic when they sold quality (and the stores had a 1940’s jungle /military vibe).
I’ve been offered 20x what I paid for it. Amazing!
Hungry-Treacle8493@reddit
It’s just 90’s fashion but with cheaper materials. At least skinny jeans are dying.
RepublicOfVenus@reddit
I'll be real- I don't agree and I think fashion is currently fairly complementary and compatible with what people wore in the 80s and 90s.
FlatSixFun@reddit
The lack of monoculture has fractured the very idea of widespread trends. It’s lead to less cohesive looks than were popular with previous generations. Love it or hate it,I think the last cohesive look was probably the hipsters about 10-14 years ago.
KittiesRule1968@reddit
As someone who grew up and became an adult mid 80s, no it isn't.
gopms@reddit
For me it started with the tucking sweaters into pants. I have just officially aged out of fashion. It doesn't bother me. Now I just wear whatever I want without caring if it is fashionable. It is freeing and honestly, I think I dress better than I did before. If something is fashionable but doesn't suit you then you look bad in it. Almost no fashions look good on most people so you can either dress fashionably in clothes that don't suit you most of the time or you can dress in things that look good on you. Besides, fashions change so quickly these days and so much fashion is just a rehash of old stuff that everything is in fashion and out of fashion at the same time. Also, the other day I was like, fuck it, and I wore a Mrs. Roper-esque kaftan get up and got so many compliments - ha! There is a cute Baroness von Sketch bit about this.
GloomyCamel6050@reddit
Time to develop my Signature Look!
K_in_Belgium@reddit
It's also the lack of quality fabrics that make fashion so disappointing. Everything is fast-fashion and made of fabric that disintegrates after one season. Even in thrift stores now there's crap from Shein and Primark. I stick to solid colors and look for 100% cotton, linen or wool. That way I can pair it with a trendy accessory.
It is funny seeing the younguns wearing 90s fashion, which in retrospect wasn't that bad!
warrenao@reddit
Long as their damned pants are pulled all the way up, I really don't care.
Ok_Key_4731@reddit
From what I'm seeing, the kids are wearing a lot of the stuff we did at their age. Fashion trends are very cyclical.
theblisters@reddit
Current trend is 90s minimalist. That's easy, we invented it
girlpaint@reddit
Today's "fashion" is ridiculous. It makes me feel kike laughing at those who are today's fashion victims. It def doesn't make me feel old tho.
Life_Grade1900@reddit
My fashion hasn't changed since high school. Black jeans, and heavy metal t shirts
Oryx1300@reddit
The teens dress just like I did in the 90s in high school and my parents hated it then too. Sometimes fashion is "ugly" because it is a rejection of something. I personally love all of it because it is interesting and ever changing. Damn, it would be boring to wear the same style for years. But it doesn't mean I engage in all of it. We each need to have our own style and then pick and choose which pieces of fashion in engage with.

My daughter & her friends like to design & make their own outfits & jewelry - that's pretty punk 👨🏻🎤 PS: think I saw some kids on your lawn. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I love Boden, an English company with no nonsense clothes that last. Most of them are out of my price point so I spend a lot of time looking at pictures of clothes online. Some of their clothes are being replicated by an American company, Quince, which has great finds but you have to read the reviews to know which items are worth it.
formerlyJenks@reddit
I also love Boden and buy it second hand on eBay and Poshmark for cheap.
Signal_Reputation640@reddit
Upvote for Boden. I have dresses I've been wearing for years from them and they're still fashionable and in good condition. Funnily enough - I also have lots of Athleta pants as well. Great quality, comfort and style.
Wascally_Badger@reddit
Starting with hipsters and their stupid fucking moustaches, tight pants, and ugly thrifted clothes worn "ironically", it seems that the tackier and dumber you look, the more accepted and encouraged it is. So we have acid washed mom jeans, mullets, crocks, pajama pants, oversized sweatshirts, and anything and everything 70s and 80s being proudly sported.
The reason? Zoomers don't care about anything they way we did. We had preppy, jock, alt, grunge, punk, goth, etc. aesthetics that made a statement about who we were. We only caught the beginning of western capitalism going to shit, hence our carefully curated fashion statements. Zoomers are living through the end of capitalism, and "fuck it" seems to be their motto, and I honestly can't say that I blame them.

There is nothing that makes me feel my age more than my confusion of fashion/style/clothing as a woman in her 40s.
Im4Bordeaux@reddit
Yes! The vast majority of clothing currently available is hideous. As usual, GenX is invisible because everything is geared toward the youngest and oldest ends of the age spectrum. Teen skater and bingo grandma styles are not appealing. It's hard work curating decent outfits so it's a good thing I'm still a mall rat and habitual online shopper, lol.
plemyrameter@reddit

I have a different take. We understand fashion and we’ve mostly seen and worn it all. We realize that trends are going to come and go so quickly and we don’t want to buy today’s trash clothing for a trend. (We learned our lesson with parachute pants and western shirts.)

AttitudePersonal@reddit
We've been going through a seismic shift in how fashion is presented and consumed.
The Internet has broken the old mainstream vs subculture model we grew up with, where people would either dress to fit into the mainstream or to signal which subculture they belonged to.
Now everyone has their own little bubble of interests, and trends bubble up and pop as quickly as a Tiktok video. Fashion to most people no longer signals identity or belonging, but interests. Some looks really only get worn for the 'gram...I'm looking at you Dark Academia. Combine that with fast-fashion making cheap, shitty clothing available to all, and you see a lot of slop out there. You can safely ignore most of that shit, it's ephemeral and won't last.
The good news is that people who are actually into fashion are slowly reverting back to the old model and being consistent with their looks, chasing coveted "archive" pieces from their favorite designer's back catalogues, and shopping secondhand/vintage. Look at the kids reviving Hedi Slimane's 2000's Dior and 2010's SLP, rocking 20 year old jeans, tees, and leather.
CromulentPoint@reddit
You said it better than I could. Everything is fair game now, as long as it’s worn with confidence.
Nervous-Rooster7760@reddit
I find it funny to see my 25 year old wearing clothes that were in style when I was a kid. I have always been drawn to preppy look so that is what I tend to buy. Daughter says I have finance bro vibe well guess makes since given my career. Is it in style ? Who knows but I certainly don’t care. I like it so that is all that matters.
BuffsBourbon@reddit
Same. My college sophomore son tells me that when he needs to get dressed up for a formal or something professional, his friends always ask him how he knows how to put himself together so well - ties, pocket squares, proper shirt and suck colors, etc. He tells them he learned it from his dad.
But yeah, basically I’ve just adopted a style, and I’ll slightly adjust my look based on current “fit/sizing” and materials.
Nervous-Rooster7760@reddit

semper-gourmanda@reddit
men's fashion hasn't changed a lot, but the syles and colors are awful.

I really miss In Style magazine. It was so helpful in spotting trends and making them wearable for regular people. I especially liked the layouts on how to wear a trendy style based on your age.

I couldn't care less what other people think of my appearance. I dress to please myself, and only myself. I have wide, flat feet. Heels kill me. i...am at the ssme point. i am trying to pivot to style. that is, things that when i put them on, make me blow myself a kiss in the mirror and ssy, yeah, you look cute. and it has POCKETS.
for example, high waisted jeans are having a moment. my young self loved these, my old self does not like to show her ass crack or her granny panties. investing heavily. Barrel leg jeans- very cute on my curvy figure, and look nice with a more fited top, which looks nice on me.
i do a lotbof second hand shopping, because im retired, and broke ass, but i only buy things that make me feel confident. i have no one in my life to impress but myself.
fashion has also sped up past what my brain can comprehend, so i see it more like bird watching- just stuff flickering by. im on mor of a 1980s schedual. A new outfit for spring, fall, winter, summer. Not early early spring, eaRly spring, late spring early , summer, etc.
if its not fun, i dont do it. its not all for me, anymore. heck, i dont think its made for humans at all, anymore, just for the corporate grind.
