Pro tip for other fat losers out there. The gym is for building muscle. The kitchen is for losing weight. It's a lot easier to just not eat the 250 cal cookie than it is to run for 20 minutes.
The problem with making your weight-loss strategy gym-first is people tend to then over-eat even further. Fix the diet first.
True, the vast majority of people think weight loss is all about working out, but it's all about the diet.
You can lose 100% of your goal weight without ever leaving the couch. Hell, you could do it eating a diet composed entirely of Doritos and MTN dew. It all comes down to calories in calories out. You need to burn more calories than you're taking in. (for the record you absolutely should not lose weight by only eating Doritos lol).
Find your base metabolic rate and eat fewer calories than that and boom, you're losing weight!
Working out is very helpful though and will in general make losing weight easier. It allows you to eat more calories, it builds muscle which burns more calories passively, and generally you'll just feel better overall. Plus if you have loose skin, building muscle helps fill that in so it looks more natural.
I've lost over 100lbs (330lbs -> 227lbs) at this point, and 99% of it has been done purely through diet.
Anyone worth your time in the gym is not going to call you a fat loser. Everybody is there to improve themselves. Even the guys who are already shredded are still trying to improve and maintain themselves. Yeah you'll get the occasional roid rager douchebag but they're extremely few and far between.
As a gym rat, no one cares. I love seeing out of shape people start their fitness journey you can probably go up and ask the most jacked dude at the gym what to do and he’ll tell you.
I’ve talked to people for 30 mins about workout programs and I’ve never even met them before.
99.9% of people that work out regularly are extremely positive, except in 3 circumstances: you’re using comically bad technique, you’re taking too long on the equipment other people want to use, or you smell really bad. Otherwise, we’re all cheering for each other.
Try going with a friend, it can take your mind off of it. Otherwise just remember that everybody is there to improve themselves, not just you, and if they are snickering it's because they are insecure themselves.
