Ooh ty i’ll try this

So much this. I thought I was the only one. Sainsbury's Vivaldi, both salad and the bigger ones are the best potatos.

Have you considered cutting the potatoes into half/quarters to reduce cooking time?
Lost_Garlic1657@reddit (OP)
Yes even cutting them into small pieces doesn’t do it
carlovski99@reddit
There isn't going to be much variation in cooking time between different varieties - waxy potatoes may take slightly longer I guess.
Careless-Giraffe-623@reddit
I'll often cut potatoes up, but in a bowl with a bit of clingfilm losley over the top and nuke them for 2 or 4 mins.. Depending on how much of a headstart you need.

I like to make airfryer chips (soak-dry-oil-airfry)
And for those I've found the "Exceptional by ASDA British Potatoes" normally hit the spot!

M&S baby new potatoes are delicious and taste so fresh. Boil and stir in olive oil (or butter), salt and chives. Delicious hot or cold.

Potatoes go sweet if they are cold stored too long, the starch in them starts turning to sugar. It's quite noticeable at this time of the year, most shops are getting their main crop potato supply from cold storage. It can make the potatoes taste like you've put sugar in with them for cooking. All the varieties named by others here are lovely, but if stored too long before you get to buy them can go sweet. As soon as I detect sweetness I start buying early potatoes, aka new potatoes. For those Charlotte and Nicola do fine for most things.

I bought some red potatoes a month ago for the first time because they were at a big discount. I always thought you were just paying more to have a different color but they blew me and my wife away! I made jacket potatoes and the skin went all crunchy and nutty and there was generally more flavour. Red skins are all I’ve bought since! If you haven’t tried them I’d really recommend it.
nickgardia@reddit
Go for new potatoes- just need to be washed and cook quickly
budgiebirdman@reddit
M&S do a variety for mashing (or used to). Unsurprisingly they make great mash.
Revolutionary-Key533@reddit
Vanilla potatoes are nice and creamy, usually.
Thinking10Thinking@reddit
I tend to buy whatever to be honest. I may buy different potatoes each time now though to test them out, based on what I’m seeing from this thread.
Suspicious-Water-973@reddit
Booths have potatoes that were picked on the day you buy them. Lovely things
Existing-Rhubarb-972@reddit
Anya potatoes from Sainsburys!
Counterpoint-4@reddit
I love Estima for the taste - they do take longer to cook, a good baker; also Marfona but they are rarely available.
OnlymyOP@reddit
Marks do a decent King Edward if you're looking for an all rounder.
continentaldreams@reddit
Gonna sound pretentious as hell, but we buy these ones and they are by far the best potatoes I have had from a supermarket

There are different varieties of potato and they are good for different things. There's also lots of different ways to cook them. So I'm not sure what you mean by "best". However I can say that the baby new potatoes now in most supermarkets are very tasty and cook quickly.
