Fecal smell? South Dallas / Cedars

Terrible smell in south Dallas today. Did something happen with the city sewers or water treatment plant?

Most likely source: Central Wastewater Treatment Plant / Sargent Road industrial odor corridor
Dallas Water Utilities operates two wastewater treatment plants, Central and Southside. The Central Wastewater Treatment Plant is the big nearby one: it opened in 1917, sits on 300+ acres, is the second-largest wastewater plant in Texas, treats roughly two-thirds of Dallas wastewater, and discharges treated effluent into the Trinity River.
That plant is listed at/near 1020 Sargent Road, and TopoZone places it at 32.736388, -96.773888 — roughly south/southeast of The Cedars, depending where in The Cedars you are. So the wind pattern that would fit best is probably southerly / southeasterly wind.

Central WWTP is not the most likely source. Localized sewage backup/blockage or overflow is a possibility. Also, sometimes new landscaping mulch and/or manure can be mistaken for sewage. If the smell is near the WWTP then it’s probably the fat rendering plant next door. They boil animal carcasses there and it can be rancid. Remember, most wastewater is just grey water not poo.

you ever snaked a bathroom or kitchen sink drain? nasty smell, though not quite poopy

Having lived in an RV for three years and dealing directly with gray (and black) water, I assure you that gray water carries a strong odor. Totally open to other sources of course, but just know that gray water does smell.
There's also the Trinity River 1/2 mile to the West, with a few pools of runoff capture.
And our sewer system the oldest in the City - so proper airflow could also be a problem.

Sometimes the wind blows in from the wrong direction. Dallas has an open air sewage pit the size of 2 football fields not too far from you in the middle of the Trinity. They fill it up then drain it and let the solids that remain dry in the sun. Then they scrape it into dumptrucks with front end loaders and take it to their methane plant. Because these operations occur on a massive scale right in the Trinity River basin, odor can be an issue and it gets worse in the summer.

The poop wind comes through maybe once a month or so

That's only in the morning. You supposed to be up cooking breakfast or something. That's like an alarm clock.
