Looking to install performance chip at home for my project on a budget

Got a 90s Volvo 940 turbo i been slowly waking up. Its not pretty but it runs. Been reading about plug-and-play tuners as a cheap way to get a little more out of the redblock before I go full standalone ECU. Seems like you can install performance chip at home without much drama. Plug into the harness, maybe 20 minutes. But the price range is insane – $50 eBay specials up to $400 from places that actually respond to emails. Anyone running something in the middle that hasnt blown up their motor? Just want the boost to come on a bit earlier, not chasing dyno numbers.

Redblockpowered.com and Flying Bricks (on etsy) have reputable chips for b230 ECUs and EZKs from my understanding. Depending on your ECU/EZK you may also need a daughterboard.

As a Volvo guy, if you want cheap easy power gains on your b230ft you buy a boost gauge, and a manual boost controller. You can run 12-15 psi without much issue, especially if it’s a late 1992 or newer as they put oil squirrels in the block which helps a ton. Tunes and what not exist in the b230 realm but not necessary until you’re exceeding the capabilities of the current system. The computer can make up for the extra boost with the stock turbo etc. using a manual controller. The boost gauge just helps you identify your boost levels so you don’t blow her up.

If you are looking for a stand alone computer system. Megasquirt has been the very old scholl.since the early 2000s. I have seen some really cheap cars run that and get a decent tune including a turbo yugo in the early 2000s be able to run 13s. Check online for more details and I am sure a tune for what you have is just a download away for the most part at this point.
Can not say I have even spoke of this system inna few years....wow.

99.99% of "performance chips" are either complete bullshit or just a resistor in line with the O2 sensor causing the system to run richer, which will give you more power for a bit while it fills your engine with soot and ruins your cat.
