Why are people amused when I list Sleep as a hobby?

It's good for your mental health.
You feel refreshed afterwards.
Skin looks on point after regular deep sleep.
I could go on, but we all know how important it is and also it's enjoyable. So if you can be a Foodie, why can't you be a Sleepie?
Ultra_Leopard@reddit
Ha! Are you my colleague? She says her hobby is napping.
SnooozeFezt@reddit (OP)
I may well be! đ
LowAioli3870@reddit
This pisses me off to no end as a breathie.
MyCatIsFluffyNotFat@reddit
Breatharian
LowAioli3870@reddit
Oh no, that's too hardcore. I only breathe recreationally, I'm not an air junkie.
MyCatIsFluffyNotFat@reddit
Wise move. Balance in all things.
Yourepissed@reddit
âYou said you were interesting!â
âNo, I said I was into resting.â

VolcanicBear@reddit
Because it's a literal necessity to live. It also generally isn't done as a recreational activity. Too much sleep is bad for you.
It's like saying breathing is a hobby.
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
A foodie's hobby is preparing or trying different varieties of food, not just act of eating. Sleep would only be a hobby if there were any possible variety in sleeping.
CastleMeadowJim@reddit
Isn't there a lot of variety in sleeping?
Time you go to sleep, length of sleep, location, position, bedding, lighting, temperature control. I'd hardly say that sleeping on the ground in a tent and sleeping on a memory foam mattress on a ship is zero variety.
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
Nope. Once you're asleep, it's the same sleep as it always is.
CastleMeadowJim@reddit
I wish. Sometimes I wake up feeling worse than before I fell asleep.
theredvip3r@reddit
Extreme sleeping has got to be a thing.
MyCatIsFluffyNotFat@reddit
I am very good at napping. I consider it a skill. I look down on people who can't nap, cant caffeine nap, dont know their deep sleep from their REM.
whatanabsolutefrog@reddit
Slightly off topic but I think eating absolutely can be a hobby.
Cooking can obviously be a hobby, but even someone who is just really into learning about new food and trying out cuisines/restaurants.
solidalcohol@reddit
In defence of foodies, itâs about more than just putting food in your body to live.
seklas1@reddit
Iâd argue being a âfoodieâ is not a hobby. Cooking is a hobby. You have to eat, but you donât have to cook.
Sleeping is necessary. So it canât really be a hobby. If all you do is sleep, that makes you a - boring person? đ€·ââïž If you donât have any hobbies, then that also speaks for your character.
YouSayWotNow@reddit
Being a "foodie" isn't just "eating". It's seeking out enjoyable food experiences, whether home cooked or eating out. And whilst I agree that cooking can be a hobby, not everyone who is interested in food enjoys cooking.
I have friends who aren't that interested in food, and who will happily eat the same few dishes on rotation for the entirety of their lives. One tells me she sees food as fuel and if she could take a pill a day not to have to eat, she would! Foodies are more likely to seek out and eat a far wider range of foods and take a great deal of enjoyment from it all.
seklas1@reddit
Sure, but I donât think thatâs a hobby. I think it just means the person is either - rich, or gets easily bored, or both.
âI like doing laundryâ - okay?.. I donât think thatâs a hobby to like having to put dirty clothes into a washing machine and then take them out of the washing machine.
âI like shoppingâ - sure⊠you like the feeling of dopamine hitting your brain when you look at things you donât have yet and then you buy them. But itâs not really a hobbyâŠ
But I can see somebody trying to justify that anything that brings pleasure to a person, is a hobby. Fair enough, but for me there is a line I draw where a hobby is more than just a simple âI felt goodâ.
YouSayWotNow@reddit
If you invest a lot of your free time into seeking out great food, either by researching great restaurants and visiting them, even travelling to various countries to try their cuisines, reading lots of cookery books to find new dishes and learn how to make them... there are many many ways that enjoying food is absolutely a hobby.
seklas1@reddit
Yes, if you buy cooking books and researching how to make them - thatâs called cooking, which is a hobby.
If you travel to try different foods, thatâs just an extension of âI like to travel/exploreâ. Like, we have indian, thai, korean, chinese etc foods at home. I cook them sometimes (if he canât cook) because my partner likes trying new or different foods, or even just something more complex than what a british food generally is. He likes cooking. I donât like cooking, I like baking.
We go to nice places to eat sometimes, michelin star places etc, because itâs fancy/interesting/fun, but I donât think itâs a hobby. Itâs just a vanity thing, because we can afford to go somewhere new and try what they offer. I like eating new foods too, but I donât think eating fancy is a hobby. Itâs a nice luxury to have.
YouSayWotNow@reddit
Enjoying food is not just about cooking though, that was deliberately one item in a list, and no, most people who consider themselves foodies (or food lovers) aren't seeking out great restaurants out of vanity! You have some "interesting" ways of thinking! đ€Ł
seklas1@reddit
I think I made it pretty clear that I donât consider âeatingâ a hobby. Just because you like something different other than bangers and mash everyday, doesnât change the fact that itâs still âeatingâ.
Itâs fine if you think itâs a hobby, I donât think it is.
If I ask somebody âwhatâs your hobby?â And they say - âI like to eat new dishesâ. Iâd just think they have no hobby. Like, I donât care if you take lunch breaks in Venice or Tokyo, or Beijing or whatever, if you travel to just eat food, that is weird and you have a problem.
YouSayWotNow@reddit
So judgemental on what other people consider as hobbies! đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł

I get the same reactions when I list breathing and blinking as hobbies
They're just jealous man. Thinking of taking up perspiring as a weekend hobby
Adm_Shelby2@reddit
I've been an amateur defecator for years and am thinking of turning pro.
Renew3DUK@reddit
Bullshit.
Adm_Shelby2@reddit
Working my way to that level.
BuckfastAndHairballs@reddit
Personally my hobby is peeing. Really good at it too, not to brag but got up to do it 3 times last night!
BuncleCar@reddit
No sweat ;)
SnooozeFezt@reddit (OP)
If you enjoy blinking. You carry on good sir!!
BuncleCar@reddit
Sleeping is a way of life ;)
loudnoises31@reddit
its literally no way to live, nobody's on their death dead being like those 6 months I spent sleeping round Europe were amazing. Or that new years I spent in Brazil asleep was incredible, best experience of my life.
HellPigeon1912@reddit
I think there's a difference between a "hobby" and a "thing you spend your time doing" and in my opinion the divider is a hobby requires some kind of active participation.
Playing basketball is a hobby. Learning the flute is a hobby. Writing poetry is a hobby.
Watching TV, doomscrolling on your phone, or sleeping are not hobbies even if they fill a lot of your time
Theratchetnclank@reddit
Watching movies can be a hobby, if you are really into cinema and seek out different films for different experiences.
Watching eastenders every night probably isn't though.
Dragonwithwhiskers@reddit
If you were into trying different sleep products, bedding, and bedroom decor and maybe experiencing hotel rooms and other novel sleeping arrangements... then maybe writing reviews or at least collecting comparative thoughts on them then you'd be a sleepie rather than simply someone who sleeps
adammx125@reddit
Being a foodie doesnât mean you just eat food, it means you are invested in finding new flavours, interesting places to eat, new styles of food and cooking etc etc. Unless your hobby is finding weird, new and interesting ways to sleep then itâs not a hobby, youâre just doing what literally 100% of the world do. Itâs like when people list âwatching TVâ as a hobby.
pullingteeths@reddit
I think by the "foodie" definition it can be. There's a lot of "hobby" stuff at that level that applies to sleep, for example researching how to do it most effectively, having beauty and relaxation routines before it, getting into all the products that can be involved with that as well as sleepwear/bedclothes. I don't think of it as a literal hobby myself but there can be a big difference between someone who approaches it like that and gets particular enjoyment and relaxation out of it and someone who views it as purely functional
BuckfastAndHairballs@reddit
Yeah i guess sleep could be a hobby in the way you're describing or having interest in various things around sleep- improving the quality of it, researching it etc.
66f6@reddit
I bet you're the kind of person who lists 'sarcasm' as a language they speak, and thinks that's hilarious
SuccessfulBenefit972@reddit
Do you hang out with other sleep enthusiasts and go to bed and linen expos on a regular basis? If so, then yes you can state this. If not, youâre just a human, doing human things.
trypnosis@reddit
Never thought to classify it as a hobby but a prolific napper I will be adding it to my hobby list.
YouSayWotNow@reddit
I also love sleep! If napping were an Olympic sport, I'd be winning GOLD every time!
SnooozeFezt@reddit (OP)
I've found my people.
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
Because it's a necessary biological function. As much as 'eating' is - but the difference between 'someone who eats' and 'a foodie' is how they choose where to eat, how they explore different cultures and food types.
There aren't many ways to 'sleep differently'. There isn't a movement for people who explore new exotic ways to go unconscious for 6-8 hours a night.
SuperDinkle406@reddit
Becauase they are starting struck meeting the real Sleeping Beauty.
... and good on you.
socratic-meth@reddit
Same, people look at me funny when I say taking a shit is a hobby. It is important, you would die if you didnât do it, and you feel refreshed after.
And I get some time to make Reddit comments.
Philluminati@reddit
You're literally unconscious. The purpose of a hobby is that it demonstrates you have personality and interests.
MyCatIsFluffyNotFat@reddit
Its on my CV as a hobby. đđ»
ImplementNo1851@reddit
hahaha, how do interviewers react when they find it, before I also add it?
filbert94@reddit
You're doing a philosophy degree aren't you?
solidalcohol@reddit
Listen, I love a good nap, but I wouldnât ever call it a hobby.
partywithanf@reddit
Go on then, list it as a hobby on your CV.
spidertattootim@reddit
Because it's not a hobby.
loudnoises31@reddit
Sleep isn't a optional life choice. When people ask what your hobbies are they want to know what kind of person you are - saying sleep makes me think you're incredibly dull and potentially uncreative.
EasyCheesecake1@reddit
Because everyone sleeps, of course you might engage with it in a way that makes it a hobby, sure! Going to cafes and restaurants or cookery can be seen as a hobby but putting 'Eating food' would seem odd.. because we all have to eat food.
OverTheCandlestik@reddit
Because itâs not?
