Where does Wimpy get their milkshake syrup from?
Posted by skyban@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 29 comments
I went to a Wimpy on the weekend, and it was a lovely nostalgic blast from the past. One thing that doesn’t appear to have changed is the milkshake flavours, especially the banana.
It’s that same beautifully artificial and over sweet banana taste. It flooded back the memories of many a childhood weekend morning spent with the family in a Wimpy.
Does anyone know where they source it from?

It's probably Crusha. It's is the industry standard and commercially they produce flavours not available to the public.
Dependent_One6034@reddit
We used to get Crusha Lime.
No, Milk should not be any sort of citrus flavour.
Yes - It was bloody delicious.
Discworld_Monthly@reddit
Lime was available up until about 4 years ago... And yes it was lush

Sounds like a good shout, thank you!

I thought Crusha was just a 2000s oddity that had faded into obscurity
buy_me_lozenges@reddit
2000s?!?!? It's decades old, I remember being equally excited and disappointed by it in the 80s.
UnacceptableUse@reddit
Maybe that's just my age then. All I remember is the adverts
buy_me_lozenges@reddit
Conversely I'm just showing my age, I don't remember the adverts, just the promise of a milkshake and the vaguely underwhelming end result.
jfp1992@reddit
It faded into b2b sales

I didn't realise until now Crusha was founded in 1955! I only became aware of it during its 2003 relaunch.
AskingBoatsToSwim@reddit
They say that but I haven’t seen any pre-2003 Crusha stuff…

Isn’t that the one made by cats?

Wimpy still exists? I had no idea.

When you get a breakfast roll... They ask if you want a runny yolk.
Love that there is one near me.

I went down a rabbit hole when I found one near my friend's house. They were owned by the same company as Burger King and a lot were converted into Burger Kings because it has better brand recognition. In 2007 the brand was bought by a South African company they are expanding their market again in the UK (apparently)
DefStillAlive@reddit
Yes, I remember them all turning into Burger King, probably in the 80s or early 90s. The list of restaurants on their website seems to consist mainly of small towns I've never been to and small towns I've never heard of, so not surprised I'd missed them.
SnooDonuts6494@reddit
In the UK, it's a brand called "Crusha". (I'm not sure if it is elsewhere?)

Let me tell you a story about bananas.
The reason banana sweets and milkshakes taste nothing like bananas you buy from the store is because its a new kind of banana.
Many years ago we had a certain tasty kind of banana. but they are a monoculture. so one fungus wiped them all out. so all sweets are based on that profile.
the new bananas we eat are one we got sold as good enough.
they are about to be wiped out through fungus.
so they are trying to get us onto a new banana that tastes nothing like bananas.
read about bananas and monoculture
PierreTheTRex@reddit
The banana we used to grow is the gros michel, and it has been replaced with the cavendish for most people, however it's still available in some places but super rare

probably a Taylor machine which is what McDonalds use (great YouTube rabbit hole about this by Jonny Harris ...) and you can use any whippy mix and then you buy bags of syrup. so we use a Taylor machine, buy the syrup from flavour burst and use angelito mix
Discworld_Monthly@reddit
My FIL used to work for Taylors - McDonald's don't generally use them anymore as they started using a competitor years ago.

WIMPY. A relic of the past I thought was lost to time... I haven't seen one in an age!
