Does your gym play loud music?

I go to puregym and I really like all their facilities except the incredibly loud music. There's a class going on in an open area which is playing its own loud music, then there's a different loud music playing in another area of the gym, which is also an open area and both of these streams are merging and makes me feel disoriented (I've always been sensitive to loud noise). I talked to the staff politely requesting them if they could maybe turn off 1 stream or reduce the volume and they said no to both. I guess I have to wear noise cancelling earbuds but still feels weird that gyms are playing nightclub levels of music.

Yes and I hate it. No-one wants to listen to that shit, everyone has their own headphones in. But there are no decent gyms where I live.

I literally left puregym because of that. I want to listen to my own music and they played it at a level that meant that was impossible without damaging my hearing with my own headphones

It was the spin class music that put me off. It wasn't even in a separate room just in a corner of the warehouse so everyone could see and hear them.

That's not really fair. Not all of us have the same tolerance to sound. It is literally unbearable and causes pain for some people. For a lot of us, it is very tiring and takes some time to recover from noisy environments. I have to wear noise cancelling earbuds almost everywhere and earplugs when at work. I agree with OP, gym music is far too loud. I have a sensory processing disorder. Having to deal with multiple very loud noises in a busy environment would be impossible for me without ear protection. And on my worse days I simply won't go to the gym. More and more establishments are recognising the need for quiet times. It's not unreasonable to ask for an accommodation. There is no need for Music to be uncomfortably loud at the gym.

My old gym (Nuffield) would play music over the speakers, at a reasonable volume but then run "gym floor classes" with a boom box blasting out songs that changed every 30 seconds. They also often didn't turn off the normal music, so you'd hear both.

I’m laughing so much because this is exactly what I said at 6.15 at a pure gym this morning 😂 I actually couldn’t continue with my set because it was so loud, the guy who says the emergency procedure was also going, there was the other music on, and then a guy singing (he’s a vibe) and I just had to stop. It’s ridiculous how loud it is some mornings!

Yes, so I wear generally wear NC headphones. Oddly, though, the speakers were out of order for the last few weeks and it turns out silence punctuated by grunting is even worse.

The gym group does, it's pretty loud (though not club level, thank god.) I dislike it and wear my headphones with an audio book playing! It's also terrible music, I've never once heard a song I vaguely recognise.

I go to a PureGym and the regular music is audible but isn’t loud. It’s a bit cacophonous when there’s a class on, with their loud music on at the same time, but the rest of the time it’s at a nice level. I figured it was a level set across the chain, but maybe not. Might be worth an email to their support to ask what the deal is. Maybe your branch has a bit of a dickhead of a manager.

I use noise cancelling ear buds and you can still hear what the gym is blasting from the opposite end to the session being run. If its that loud to me, with ear buds, at the opposite end of the gym, how the fuck can the people in the session hack it? Its disgustingly loud for no good reason.

Every gym I’ve ever been to does, and I don’t know a single person who benefits from it. If you can afford a gym membership you probably have headphones and a phone to listen to music you actually like!

Mine has music playing but it’s not overly loud. You can talk in a normal conversational tone without raising your voice. It’s not to my taste (I’m late 50s so would prefer 80s sounds 😂😂) But it doesn’t put me off going. Most of the music has repetitive thumping beats rather than melodic so is actually quite useful to increase my rowing speed to! But I’d love some 80s disco ! 😂💪🏻💪🏻

I joined a new PureGym with the idea of using their treadmills over winter when the weather was really dire (I run about 50k/week year round) but the first time I went in to try to do so, the music was so loud (and the airflow so poor) that I pretty much gave up on that idea there and then. I would rather run in cold and rain on slippery pavements than endure that again. Thought I might try different hours (can't see them pumping that out late at night / early mornings etc especially with flats above) but it quite put me off, and the weather improved since then

My local PureGym plays wank music but at reasonably low volume so you can easily still ignore it and make convo. Tried out the Foundry that opened near me for a while and that place reverberated with truly awful music that could be heard through noise cancelling headphones

The owner of my gym is partially deaf and I can only assume wants us all to be as well. We’ll be having a nice time with reasonable volume music and he’ll come in and suddenly I have to shout at the person a couple of feet away from me. He’ll proceed to train with his headphones on and we’ll all take it in turns to knock the volume down a couple of digits at a time until it goes below 80db.

Yup, council run gym. They literally have a 6ft tall speaker blasting by the door as you go in. I wear noise cancelling headphones so I can listen to my own music

My daughter is very sound sensitive and has to wear noise cancelling headphones. The music isnt too bad a bit EDM / 90s rave ! But when they put their radio channel on (Better/GLL) thats DIRE 🤮🤮🤮

My gym plays music, but nowhere near nightclub volume. Two competing music streams in an open space would drive me crazy too. Noise-cancelling earbuds help, but gyms should balance atmosphere with member comfort and accessibility.
