Does it boggle anyone else's mind that the mullet actually came back?

I get it, fashion is cyclical and trends return, but there are a lot of past styles that have stayed in the past... and rightly so. Considering how much we looked back on the mullet with such disbelief and disdain in the late 90s and early 2000s, it genuinely blows my mind that it made a comeback. It was viewed as a joke of a hairstyle. Now I'm just waiting to see if the rat tail rears it's ugly head again.
OkAthlete8327@reddit
Not with all of other horrendous bullshit that has “come back”. These kids look hilarious.
Frosty_Cloud_2888@reddit
Ape drape, hockey hair, achey breaky hair
Necessary-Duty-7952@reddit
This was the one fashion trend I was *convinced* would never come back. Fanny packs? Sure. Bell bottoms? I get it. Pleated pants? Why not. But mullets?? And porn-staches???
TechKetchup@reddit
JNCOs coming back confused the hell out of me too. At first I thought it was just a fluke but it just keeps going.
No_Custard_6481@reddit
JNCOs are cool. I loved that grunge look. So much better than redneck vibe!
TechKetchup@reddit
I loved my JNCOs too. I just never saw that coming back. And for sure it’s better than red neck vibe
veglove@reddit
100%. They are so ugly, I don't understand it at all. Then again, fashion trends are sometimes inexplicable.
roonilwonwonweasly@reddit
It's better than that broccoli and peaky blinders haircuts.
Exciting_Agent3901@reddit
Did it ever really go away?
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
Yes.
Exciting_Agent3901@reddit
It really didn’t.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
Just because a few people kept wearing a mullet doesn't mean it remained trendy this whole time.
Exciting_Agent3901@reddit
Who said it was trendy? It’s been around. Get out of the city. Go to a nascar race any time in the last 25 years. The mullet has been strong.
Affectionate_Ask_769@reddit
My favorite website in the early 2000’s was mulletsgalore.com which was just photos and descriptions of all of the types of mullets and also photos of said types spotted in the wild.
I’m curious if the mini truck will come back. Every “hot guy” my 13 year old self has a crush on was a 16 or 17 year old dude with a long ass mullet and a mini truck.
IWouldntIn1981@reddit
Its so bad. I saw a GROUP of guys at the ballpark the other week that combined the broccoli hair style with the mullet... I just wanted to get them all mirrors.
zerocoolforschool@reddit
I saw a clip of some high school baseball from Oklahoma and my god the mullets…..
spaceporter@reddit
Did they have moustaches? I’ve grown moustaches ironically, but it seems like some young people are growing them thinking they look good.
Illustrious-Highway8@reddit
Yes, dude. Mullets, moustaches, and one dangly earring!
It’s like they created a Terrible Fashion Greatest Hits album and are playing it at volume 11.
Malaguy420@reddit
The Billy Ray Cyrus look huh?
IWouldntIn1981@reddit
Im sure, they were a few rows ahead of us, and I tried not to stare at how stupid they looked...
Smartal3ck@reddit
Ikr? Mustache has made a comeback. I hate it.
rohm418@reddit
And you didn't take PICTURES!?!? What is the POINT of a smart phone if not to capture pictures of the ridiculous?
IWouldntIn1981@reddit
My google drive is full of porn, sorry.
rohm418@reddit
fair. priorities.
Ineedavodka2019@reddit
That’s the cool style where I am. It’s everywhere and they all look so dumb.
TheVenetianMask@reddit
That must look like they are wearing a racoon hat made out of a poodle
Condition_0ne@reddit
I'm more mind boggled that the sleazy porn moustache came back.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
I don't know if Benson Boone helped popularize it, but yeah, that mustache with the curly mullet look is ridiculous. #oldmanrant
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
I'm actually happy it came back. The only reason it went away was homophobia so it's nice to see it's return.
BulimicMosquitos@reddit
Huh? That’s a helluva stretch there, Armstrong.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
Moustaches were heavily queer coded in the 70s and 80s, and with the rise of AIDS anything remotely related to being gay was viewed as threatening, shameful or something to be avoided. That's why in the 90s anyone that had a moustache was called gay and mo fell out of fashion. Same with men wearing pink. Hell, people still think moustaches are gay. The moustache didn't make a comeback until Movember got the ball rolling.
BulimicMosquitos@reddit
Interesting. I associate mustaches with the folks that were hurling homophobic slurs towards me throughout the 80s and 90s.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
I guess your own personal anecdote somehow outweighs history.
Malaguy420@reddit
Oh, the irony in this statement.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
It's not ironic because nothing I said was a personal anecdote. Just because you disagree with queer history doesn't mean it's not true.
BulimicMosquitos@reddit
Found the bootlicker!
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
Whose boot am I licking?
BulimicMosquitos@reddit
You rock that stache with pride, Bubba!
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
I don't have a stache. Seriously, why are you fighting with me? What's the issue here?
Malaguy420@reddit
That's some mighty revisionist history there bub.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
OK, prove me wrong. I'm happy to see any info suggesting otherwise.
Condition_0ne@reddit
Nah, it looks gross. Caterpillar upper lip. But to each their own I guess.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
To each their own but a thick moustache on a handsome face takes it to a whole other level of sexy every time. Well... maybe not every time.
Illustrious-Highway8@reddit
A thick mustache and a thin sleazy mustache are very different things, though. Not everyone can pull it off.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
Cool. Nobody was talking about thin moustaches.
obeekaybee7@reddit
They aren’t talking about a full mustache they mean the thin sparse creeper stache
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
What kind of porn are you watching??? A pornstache is a thick 70s/80s moustache.
water_bottle1776@reddit
I find it works to my advantage to look my age rather than generic 30 or 40 something.
Jephte@reddit
I thought you were the homophobe based on this remark.

Ineedavodka2019@reddit
Yes. And non of them get the reference.
ooo-ooo-oooyea@reddit
I grew a Tom Selleck mustache in college. It was awesome.
lost_horizons@reddit
A mustache looks good on like, 1 in 10 dudes. Congratulations if you are one.
fitzbuhn@reddit
Thank you.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Never left!
I am in the process of trying to do this.
SomewhereLive5921@reddit
These kids are going to look back at pictures of themselves and realize they never actually looked young. Every time I see someone with a mustache I just think they look like a middle relief pitcher in the 80’s.
jacksonmills@reddit
I feel like they all look their name is Stanley
all_no_pALL@reddit
I saw a kid with a mullet, stache, and Oakley razor blades combo the other day and I automatically smelled drakkar noir as a Pavlovian response
scoff-law@reddit
No, I'm very happy with mine.
So many of our generation's heros and hunks had mullets. It shouldn't be that surprising.
Zxar@reddit
I keep hoping the rat tail is next
Juls_Santana@reddit
Who said the mullet is back?!?
Somebody done lied to you....the porn stache has been back, but mullets are still frowned upon and laughable 'round these here parts
Fantastic-Guitar-977@reddit
Disdain???
Idk about you, but I saw (and myself had!) many many mullets during the post 9-11 to GFC era....
NoiseTherapy@reddit
Yes 😂 it looks like a roll of toilet paper laying in its side
RunAwayBeerTruk@reddit
No, it’s a classic horrible look. Let me know when rat tails make a comeback.
LazerShark1313@reddit
What I can't understand is the broccoli head that seems to be popular right now. I had a nephew that got a perm to achieve broccoli headedness
CherryCherry5@reddit
Yes and no. When cut very well, and to the shape of the person's face and head, a shaggy mullet type cut does look good, on some people. It's not for everyone, and the awful early 90s versions, a la Billy Ray Cyrus, can stay in the past.
closethebarn@reddit
Yes. I hated it then. I hate it now
Sipid1377@reddit
Same. It absolutely flatters no one. That and the Dwight Shrute/Jeffery Dahmer glasses. The glasses wear the person instead of the other way around. I'm all for people doing their own unique thing and not giving a hoot what other people think, but I feel people are only dawning these styles because they're trendy. I mean if you're going to follow a trend at least go with ones that make you look good.
closethebarn@reddit
Right even I see people making fun of the broccoli hair in my opinion is a hell if a lot more flattering than a mullet I see them as trashy or something Our generation the ones who peaked in hs and kept the haircut
Another thing I hate too is just a mustache.
I can think of only two men it looks good on .. sam Elliot and tom sellec Sellik?
I’ve noticed mustaches and mullets
Two things I just… don’t love at all on teens
And I’m in Italy right now visiting family… it’s…. Every… where
braywarshawsky@reddit
Mine was the return of the "Dad Shorts" that are just below the crotch, and all thigh.
Pard22@reddit
Yes, I think about this frequently. I’ll see someone with it and think this guy for real.
SB4_Camaro@reddit
Why do you care?
Pard22@reddit
Read what op wrote
SB4_Camaro@reddit
My questions remains. Why do you care how other people style their hair.
FlatSixFun@reddit
They don’t care, they’re voicing their opinions. It looked bad the first time. And it still looks dumb today.
SB4_Camaro@reddit
Voicing your opinion means you care. Wtf how do you not understand something so simple?
Malaguy420@reddit
Or maybe they're just responding to the actual question from OP?
Or to quote yourself:
SB4_Camaro@reddit
Responding with an opinion dummy.
MonkeyzzPaw@reddit
Everyone here is participating in social media, nobody really cares it was a response to a question.
Also, is your brain broken?
Back to the mullet, I care because it shows just how hive minded the modern gen is. They are right on schedule with cyclical marketing trends and it’s 100% due to the almost constant link of advertising to their brains via phones.
ItsNadrik@reddit
Why do you care?
Barbiegrrrrrl@reddit
Lol the camaro guy over here
Riker_Omega_Three@reddit
Nope
Fashion is a cycle
Everything that is old will one day be new again
Fun-Preparation-4253@reddit
I work at a University and a legit 1993 Metallica fan rolled through my orientation. Short. Thick shoulders. Absolutely glorious mullet. Sunken eyes with a foreign stare.
SolitudeWeeks@reddit
After seeing mom jeans become cool, nothing phases me.
brandonmiq@reddit
Few nights ago I went to my favorite dive bar. Cash only, old juke box, old wood paneling, place is dumpy but has become popular among younger folks bc it's hard to find cheap drinks in this city. I walk in and cannot believe how many designer mullets I see walking around. Place was packed. Annoying crowd, not the usual drunks.
Turns out a Morgen Wallen concert had just let out at the stadium nearby.
whatthepinche@reddit
You might be a fellow Denverite?! lol 😂 I used to frequent 12 volt tavern in Olde Town Arvada… and the bar you just described, sounds just like 12 Volt LMFAO! 😂
djdecimation@reddit
Gainesville? I stayed home to avoid them.
Pretend-Tea86@reddit
The Temu Morgan Wallen aesthetic is real, unfortunately. All my 20's aged nephews are rocking this look and it's all I can do not to lick my thumb and rub those four weedy hairs off their caffeine-pouch-puffed upper lips.
I honestly do not understand how any of them are pulling these girls who are legitimately gorgeous and sweet and smart and so far out of their leagues.
No_Custard_6481@reddit
Because their dads all know each other or they grew up together in school. They start dating at like 14 in serious relationships. It’s one huge community here of generations that know each other.
No_Custard_6481@reddit
Why why why?
I could not understand when I started seeing that around here. I live in pennsyltucky unfortunately. They are posers. One is dumber than the next. They go to fairs. The main attraction is tire pulls? I always say that wrong bc it makes no sense. The lead car drags another car down a strip. The one that does it first wins. Tractor pull. But they take or amp up a tractor but don’t have a farm? Those tires are so expensive and they have broke down houses. It’s always sponsored. It’s hot as hell and stinks. Sorry I go on these rants and I get zero invites to my partners family gatherings where they love this shit.
Ace_Robots@reddit
Is there something about your region that you love? That keeps you there? I exclusively see it characterized in popular media as hellish, and driving through has been eerie for me as an outsider. I am genuinely curious and would like to rid myself of any misconceptions.
Also feel free to ignore my request-you haven’t offered anything beyond your willingness to write your previous comment, and I respect that.
JimmyJohn_5150@reddit
Lets bring back the crew cut / goatee combo that was big back in the 90s, kind of like Edward Norton in American HIstory X.
Pandagramma@reddit
Yes. One of my early 20's boys said he was thinking about getting one- I threatened to disown him.
Emergency_Word_7123@reddit
Poor dumb Donny boy realizing he got played?
One-Preparation-7371@reddit
Youth fashion is only cool if older people don't like it. If you want it to go away, just be fine with it. Hair gets shorter or longer on different parts of the head every generation since time began. It's really no big deal. What boggles me is the idea of getting boggled by it. All hairstyles are dumb and arbitrary. Yours and mine included.
I thought being a liminal generation might give us some perspective, but oh well. Still, I'd rather save the reactionary shit for the boomers and x-ers.

Malaguy420@reddit
Yeah, I thought we pretty much collectively decided as a culture that the mullet was done. Pretty appalled to see it making a comeback
Capn26@reddit
Yes. I told my son they weren’t actually cool back then.
deadsmurfs@reddit
I'm still reeling from how the children have wholeheartedly embraced crocs when we thoroughly rejected them a decade ago...
K2sX@reddit
The Midwest never did. I have friends solidly in crocs for the last decade+. That said, i could never wear them.
MisRandomness@reddit
The same types of d-bag kids who had them back then are the same types of d-bag adults who have them now.
skallywag126@reddit
One of my favorite things to do is walk around Disneyland and my wife and I keep score of the amount of mullets we see.
rohm418@reddit
I can accept rat tails but only because baggy jeans are back in. And I'll celebrate that any chance I get.
Dr-Karate1984@reddit
The combination Jheri Curl mullet was not on my bingo card.
Mike9797@reddit
Ya I was just talking to my son about it last night. I was saying how everyone is starting to look like an Australian Hipster with these curly mohawk mullets and shit-staches. It’s a bit too much but i bet our parents were saying similar stuff about us in a way.
blondeviking64@reddit
People wear crocs and its now cool...absolutely nothing about styles returning can surprise me now. Crocs are like a mullet for your feet.
mramseyISU@reddit
My wife's way younger cousin (still in high school) has a rat tail.
boner79@reddit
yes that and teen boys wanting perms
SipexF@reddit
I dunno, I think the mullet can look good on the right folks, just like how other hairstyles can look better or worse on some people. As someone who never embraced what I wanted for a hairstyle because of public opinion, haplessly disparaging them is just another shitty way to stomp on someone's confidence.
LegitimateAbalone267@reddit
The mullet I don’t mind so much as the stupid porn stache. WTF?
FlatSixFun@reddit
Soooo many of those out there these days.
LegitimateAbalone267@reddit
Honestly, it’s like the younger generations just took all of the worst trends of our childhoods (mullets, porn staches, mom jeans, etc) and thought they’d make them cool. I guess if they think it looks cool, go for it.
Whatchab@reddit
Yes it's wild. That paired with the Uncle Rico aesthetic.

pink_faerie_kitten@reddit
Are you me? The mullets return has horrified me and yes, I live in fear of the rat tail coming back.
NeverEndingCoralMaze@reddit
I will have a rat tail because I have to leave a little bit after I grow weary of my MASSIVE FUCKING MULLET!! Or perhaps I’ll just have both.
NeverEndingCoralMaze@reddit
I’m wearing one right now.
lakebistcho@reddit
What I want to know is: did it come back ironically?
susiedotwo@reddit
I’m a woman and I grew up in the rural south. It reminds me of childhood and I honestly don’t hate it.
HereWeFuckingGooo@reddit (OP)
In metro areas, yes. But in rural areas, nope.
MikeRoykosGhost@reddit
Its not ironic in metro areas. They think it looks cool. Sincerity has replaced irony
Illustrious-Highway8@reddit
I think this happens with a lot of fashion trends.
frolicndetour@reddit
It's very big among hockey players. My nephew plays and he and several of his youth hockey teammates grew mullets 🙄
Lensgoggler@reddit
I'm not even in the US and the mullet is back for a while and I am yet to see an ironical one. Granted, I live opposite an art uni in a rather alternative neighborhood but still. I attended that same uni and we were normal in my say ffs :D Your usual goth/metal/hippie crows but with normal hairstyles.
Level_Physics8620@reddit
My main question is if young ladies actually like this trend?
Or is this the young bros way of saying, “I’m so good looking that I can sport this hideously trashy hairstyle and everyone will think I’m awesome”?
It almost seems like a contest to show how utterly ridiculous you can make yourself look without suffering socially.
Steel1000@reddit
For some the mullet never left - for kids in hockey it’s standard hair competition
nobdyputsbabynacornr@reddit
I think it's GREAT! I laughed about them then and love getting to enjoy laughing about them all over again. I think the difference this time is that the folks sporting them, for the most part, get the camp of it all. They wear them knowing they are cheesy and throwback and don't care enough about class and fashion to let it stand in the way of having a good time.
Severe-Lake1379@reddit
We called it the “hockey haircut” back in the day. Because it seemed most players had it. Reference Jaromir Jagr. It is a classic and it is cool. However some pushed it to extremes of course and I think that ruined it. I noticed my son’s friends growing it about 8 years ago and was surprised and also proud. It validated our generation of dudes were cool.
macroeconprod@reddit
It doesn't ever really die. It just sleeps for 20 or 30 years before it reawakens to harvest children. Like that thing in Jeepers Creepers.
EastTXJosh@reddit
The mullet is actually a classy hairstyle compared to some of the styles favored by my son and his friends, where the sides are shaved and faded to a floppy top.
NativeFlowers4Eva@reddit
Sort of insane and it still looks ridiculous.
ooo-ooo-oooyea@reddit
I'm surprised its not even more mainstream.
All business in the front, all party in the back - it don't get better than that
WendyPortledge@reddit
Where I live, it never went away. Just some city folks now have a trendy stylish version. The city version and the og version are different imo.
NoMonsterMarshmallow@reddit
I can tell by your discriminating eye that you are a person of culture! Most people lump them all together.
WendyPortledge@reddit
lol these are not the same. The women that got the mullet on the left in the 90s are still getting them today, but with more hairspray and colour.
TheJustBleedGod@reddit
I dont think today's mullets are real mullets. back in the day, the front short part looked professional and the long part was wild.
today's mullets are intentional are one dimensional
NoMonsterMarshmallow@reddit
Those are modern mullets. They are like diet soda and veggie burgers. Not the real thing.
TheJustBleedGod@reddit
exactly. there was a time when big hair was a thing. all rock stars had long hair. people wanted that but they also wanted to hold down a job. the mullet solved that problem. they weren't trying to be ironic.
Enxer@reddit
I say who cares. Let them enjoy their hair however they want while they have it.
I personally am still stuck in the 80's/2019 style and will probably stay there until I kick it.

NoMonsterMarshmallow@reddit
I had a duck tail mullet as a kid. About four years ago somebody told me mullets were making a comeback so I started with a rat tail and eventually grew out a full mullet. It’s several inches past my shoulders now. My wife genuinely loves it ands I get compliments all the time from strangers. Go on and hate, it only makes it grow faster.
Tinyhulk27@reddit
Makes sense to me.
Fashion today is about comfort and ease. Joggers, sweats, yoga pants, hey dude/ boat shoes. No tie shoes for all ages etc.
Mullets long hair without as much trouble trying to keep it out of ones face.
And stuff always comes back
Remember when we all rocked the haircut of an Italian tyrant because it looked good on George Clooney and Eminem? That shit was so 44 B.C. but we brought it back.
the_kid1234@reddit

Where did you grow up? Because I distinctly remember that cool girls had mullets in LA in the early 2000s.
FacePalmTheater@reddit
Not really. The fact that our generation hates it is why it came back. Should have seen my dad's face when I wore bell-bottoms as a teenager. He had the same question as you, I imagine.
Compannacube@reddit
I'm sorry, it came back? Have I been living under a rock? I haven't seen a single one in the last 15 years, and I'm not a recluse. What I do see: the man bun everywhere.

My teen son asked me if I would cut his hair into a mullet. I laughed and said, “What is a mullet these days? I know you don’t want what I know as a mullet!” But sure enough… so I gave him a mullet cut and I still don’t get it! I will never look at a mullet and take it seriously. I think the rat tail may be worse though. Or remember when guys shaved their heads but left just a small fringe of bangs?
SmegmaRocketship@reddit
Not really. Fashion always seems to run in cycles. I mean, bell bottoms came back when we were kids. Remember JNCO’s?

My 7 year old loves his mullet. For some reason the little boys in our area love the mullets and it’s so cute. My son’s is super long and he said he likes how it feels when he runs lmao. I do call him my little hillbilly deluxe haha.

yes, and the 70s moustache..
for a while i thought people were rocking them ironically, which i can kinda understand, but no, its not ironic, they think they look awesome and are "original individuals". smh

I see young people unironically wear broccoli mullets with mustaches. That's cringe enough. Now comes the cringe of the year: I seen a young woman doing this too. I don't mean a trans man, she had female clothes 80s style but her upper lip fluff was clearly dyed black. She was no middle east type or else, regular Caucasian zoomer girl. With a dyed fluff mustache.

I saw frosted tips today and thought the 90s had returned.

Mullet came back? Never left in Australia.

I hated it the first time around, because they actually thought it was cool. The guys who wear it just to rep their redneckness, I'm okay with. It's definitely a choice.

Nah, I was stoked to grow mine out after having it cut off as a 13 year old, because of a rumor that long hair wasn't permitted at the high school I was about to attend.
Not that they ever fully went away, a small elite of lesbians, bogans and rugby league players kept the long at the back flame alive through the later 90s, 2000s and 2010s so that it could burn brightly and gloriously on my shoulders once more.

Somewhere out there is a bulldyke rugby player called Shazza with the most glorious mullet the world has ever seen.

Remember what everyone looked back and laughed at in the late 00’s? Baggy jeans.
It’s all cyclical my dude. That’s why we’re in fashion again but will look like complete dorks in 10 years time and our lives will be over

It's now all cyclical, some stuff stays gone.

I never thought grandma pants would make a comeback. So disappointed
