Any weird combinations of watermelon in your country?

Here sometimes we eat it with white cheese.
AbbreviationsOk6303@reddit
Watermelon with salt is common here.

With all due respect: Where the hell are you from?
halo_exe@reddit
Judging by the username that commenter is romanian, as am I, and yeah. Here we will eat anything with bread.
thisisnitmyname@reddit
I’m from the U.S. I wasn’t trying to be rude at all. These things don’t need to be combined, however I do advocate for bread, cheese, garlic, and peppercorns to be used as much as possible. I take that back… definitely combine them.
Sufficient_Prompt888@reddit
Lmao my dad eating plain white rice with bread 👍
AlneCraft@reddit
Wait this isn't common?
That's a staple summer dessert
forbiddenfruit7218@reddit
I literally thought the same thing posted a comment and realised its not asktheworld but askbalkans 😭 anyways its pink salt on watermelon in Pakistan
Chillfire1385@reddit
A unique way to eat i love is with a dish called ''Domatesli Pilav''. It's basically rice made with only tomato juice, and the watermelon cuts through the acidic flavor like a knife, i love it so much in the summer.
Abkhaziaisnotmyhome@reddit
Cyprus has watermelon with halloumi
tzuzhang@reddit
In the southern of my country, people eat watermelon with rice, like a main dish. There’s even a stir fry dish using watermelon skin and the white part
canyoubelieveitt@reddit (OP)
Is it good?
tzuzhang@reddit
The watermelon skin thing actually pretty good. Idk about the rice + watermelon combo tho, never tried that before
KayaKafka@reddit
Watermelon and feta combination is great.
But melon, feta and raki is heaven…
Sea_Gap_6569@reddit
melon with rakı is a classic. I didn’t try with watermelon though
AlmostAnchovy@reddit
My family has been eating watermelon, feta, bread every summer. But idk how common is it here.
Sea_Gap_6569@reddit
when summer heat hits, it’s the only option
eleventh_hour_11@reddit
Very common. I personally just won't eat watermelon without some type of cheese.
EnesAkhan@reddit
Well not my country but Japanese eat ir with adding salt to it . When i tried . It indeed got same vibe as eating together with cheese 😅
canyoubelieveitt@reddit (OP)
Americans put lemon or honey on it
ninivl89@reddit
Lemon or lime on watermelon is really delicious. Or makes it taste almost like candy. Since I've tried it I cannot eat it any other way anymore
NibelWolf@reddit
Never heard of this as an American, but I have put salt on water melon plenty of times. That is pretty common, especially for older people.
Grounds4TheSubstain@reddit
I've never heard of that!
canyoubelieveitt@reddit (OP)
Maybe reels lied to me 😄
ze12man@reddit
I think it’s the Mexicans lime and tajin or chilli powder
TheBundataker@reddit
As a Turkiman I deeply enjoy Tajin
drippingonyourdick@reddit
tajin on fruit is goated but it defeats the purpose of watermelon which is just being hydrated and sweet. cheese brings the salt to balance the sugar without making your mouth burn. definitely a different vibe.
brush_with_color@reddit
Noooo

AdvancedAd3228@reddit
With rakija
ChoiceExit1334@reddit
Everything goes with rakija in the balkans 💪
Spanner_48@reddit
pickeled watermelon is disgusting
No-Heart3432@reddit
It's not weird. It's amazing combination
Cute_Contribution480@reddit
With white cheese and bread
Bojan997@reddit
In my area, I remember my grandmother used to eat melon with ham. As for watermelon, I can't quite remember, but I think people usually ate it on its own, without anything else.
Accomplished_Fox8323@reddit
In București se mai pune lime și puțin chili pe pepene, sau proaspăt cu mentă și un strop de ulei de măsline — am încercat ambele și menta cu ulei e surprinzător de bun.
neptunoX2@reddit
I heard someone used to ate watermelon with mustard....we are no longer in touch
Jaein1255@reddit
I never heard another bosnian do that but I eat watermelon sometimes with chili and lemon juice
nescoffee-m@reddit
Eating harbuz with cheese? I have never seen this combo, might try it
actinidiadel@reddit
You must be new here :)) never tried it with telemea?! Some even add a bit of bread. Delish!
nescoffee-m@reddit
I will try it! It looks very good ngl
casual_philosopher02@reddit
I eat watermelon with feta every time
zpetar@reddit
Interesting. Never heard someone in Serbia ever tried it.
Smooth-Ad2130@reddit
Watermelon with feta is almost a meme here too
oikon7@reddit
FETA
More_Ad_5142@reddit
We do eat watermelon/feta combo during summer, it is also a famous meze to go along with rakı (ouzo).
ze12man@reddit
It pairs with both?
More_Ad_5142@reddit
I mean we call ouzo rakı in Turkish, different drink than rakija in the rest of Balkans
RegionSignificant977@reddit
We have rakia with with a touch of anise in some regions, and mastika which is rakia with more anise.
ReachEuphoric3595@reddit
Spent years dismissing watermelon and feta as culinary nonsense. Finally tried it. The sweet, the salt, the cold crunch...damn. My third eye is open now.
More_Ad_5142@reddit
It is one of those things that sounds horrible in theory but is very good in practice
ReachEuphoric3595@reddit
Is ouzo basically the version of rakija we have in ex-yu lands?
If so, I have to wonder who came up with the idea of pairing it with watermelon and feta without considering the consequences. Doesn't the sugar from the watermelon turbocharge the alcohol?
RegionSignificant977@reddit
Do you have Anise flavored high alcohol drink?
canyoubelieveitt@reddit (OP)
Ouzo is more like mastika, if you have this.
Commercial_Law_1689@reddit
My first drink was half a liter of mastika in one go. I was tricked by the suspicious coke bottle. 🤣
More_Ad_5142@reddit
Ouzo is an aniseed flavored very strong alcohol that you dilute with iced water which then turns milky. We call it rakı in Turkish, it’s our national alcoholic beverage. We got it from the Greeks. It’s different than the rakija in ex-Yugo but etymologically the same.
star_relevant@reddit
No, because sugar only gets turned into alcohol during the fermentation process. After that, it's just adding sweetness
Substantial-One1934@reddit
Watermelon injected with mastika Uzo
Jediuzzaman@reddit
Watermelon, Van cheese and bread. The best combination for me tho.
emremirrath@reddit
Wait...
Watermelon and cheese is considered weird?
Longdem1se18@reddit
If you think that is weird you have clearly never seen a Balkan summer dinner. Watermelon and feta is basically the national anthem.
S0urP4tchK1d5@reddit
fuck yeah watermelon w white cheese is BOMB
No-Championship-4632@reddit
I had a relative that put salt on it.
I got two bottles of tajin from Mexico and I put some on it, it actually gets rather tasty that way. Slightly hot, slightly acidic.
Substratas@reddit
Same in Albania. Watermelon + feta cheese was common back in the day.
kamarjera@reddit
I prefer Cypriot way - halloumi cheese over feta 😋
Premudra@reddit
Watermelon with halloumi in Cyprus 🤤👌 🍉
happy_mood990@reddit
Eating watermelon and drinking beer after
