objectively the israeli political landscape is not much different than China or Iran .. most every candidate is zionist, all the relevant parties are zionist ..
they pretend to be a democracy but actualky its fascism just as Jabotinsky planned
meister2983@reddit
That's a ridiculous take. Anti-Zionist parties exist and are in the Knesset. But if 80% of the population is Zionist, well.. that's just democracy.
WestcoastAlex@reddit
no different than communist China or Islamist Iran then huh
meister2983@reddit
Those countries restrict who can run; Israel isn't

Israeli free speech laws are conceptually far more similar to European ones than the American iteration.
WestcoastAlex@reddit
yet enforced more like north korea
cropduster102@reddit
European free speech laws (the model for Israeli free speech laws) don't treat free speech as absolute. There are some benefits to it and some drawbacks, like any law.
This statement has no basis in reality.

As I said - speech laws are far more similar to Europe. Also, there's a war going on. There have been rallies every day about the government in Israel since 2023. The vast majority of them proceed perfectly as planned.
WestcoastAlex@reddit
in europe the police are beqting up and arresting protestors for speech
cropduster102@reddit
Looks like they have laws limiting public gatherings during a war. And further research (a quick google search) tells me they're still doing it anyways.
All you've done is demonstrate that Israeli and European speech laws have far more in common than Israeli and American ones.
WestcoastAlex@reddit
dont worry.. americans are being arrested for speech too
cropduster102@reddit
Americans have a very unique approach with whatever constitutes hate speech or incitement. Whoever feels hated wants the other side arrested for it, whoever's saying it wants the right to say it, and they switch back and forth on a daily basis.
Of course, freedom of speech != freedom of consequences, as Gina Caruso learned 6 years ago during the main Covid pandemic.
NormalEntrepreneur@reddit
Why people so obsessed about democracy anyway. Genocide commited by democracy is still genocide, it's actually worse because it means most people support the genocide.

And, regardless of all that, the developer of Silwan was ordered to compensate people for their property.

Isnât that like saying every candidate in most countries are nationalists (as in the concept of the nation state)? Like ofc anyone involved in the politics of a nation is going to be a believer in said nation.
I wouldnât really call it a âpretend democracyâ either, even with all of Israelâs problems. Even with the backsliding/corruption under Bibi and the growing far-right, candidates still compete against each in extremely competitive elections. The last time a single party held a majority in the Knesset was the 60âs, not something indicative of an authoritarian regime Iâd say.
And democracies are fully capable of running oppressive and expansionist institutions, if me and 5 of my friends decide to rob and burn your house down, thatâs technically still a democracy.
WestcoastAlex@reddit

Israel is a country like any other country. It has things it does well and things it doesn't.
WestcoastAlex@reddit
israel was founded on terrorism and ethnic cleansing by terrorists
every government israelies ever elected supported and continued occupation, ethnic cleansing and genocide
israel is a state sponsor of terrorism and their economy relies on selli g weapons to conflict zilones, exporting chaos to make themselves look 'normal'
israelis are incapable of following international law or respecting the sovreignty of states .. the list of israel's extra judicial killings of foreign leaders is a long wiki page and they are proud of it
it is Not 'like any country' and has a population of just 10 million
cropduster102@reddit
lol
Offering land for peace belies this statement.
The Israeli economy is considered quite diversified. It also has less than 5% of market share for weapons sales.
Just looked at this and it's less than 6 foreign leaders assasinated by the Israeli government.
There was no war in Lebanon until Hezbollah launched rockets. Just like there was no war in Lebanon until the PLO was launching attacks from there across the border. Iran has proudly declared they are supporting proxy forces - would you rather they attack the person/group ordering it or the country of origin? Or should they just sit there and take it?
A majority of the world's countries have a population less than Israel.
WestcoastAlex@reddit
nothing you wrote is correct
cropduster102@reddit
what incorrect things did I write?
Are you contesting that a population of 10 million people puts you above the majority of countries? We can look that up easily.

Are you contesting this? Like #1, easily looked up.

Israeli Druse are very happy being Israelis. Golani Druse applications for citizenship have skyrocketed over the past few years. Sounds like they want to be Israeli citizens and not just permanent residents.

I swear Westerners have 0 understanding of Chinas political landscape but then this is reddit so here we are.
Firstly, China has 8 parties in its government, the largest being the communist party. The communist party is a vanguard party who's entire legislative purpose is to preserve the structure fought for in the revolution (the people being in charge, not the corporations and land owners).
Secondly, its law that every ethnicity in China is to be represented at above capita level in parliment. They have 56 recognized ethnicities and each of these is recognized via representation.
China votes via a bottom up approach. They vote for representation at village level, then town, then city, then region and then national. The vast majority of Chinese people consider their system to be democratic and support it.
https://www.hks.harvard.edu/publications/quality-governance-china-citizens-view
To compare this system to Israel (a literal apparthied state) or to Iran (a religious theocracy) is either deliberately disingenuous or poorly informed.
swelboy@reddit
But if elections are never truly competitive, then how are leadership held accountable or there be any true dissent? âServing the peopleâ is simply up to the partyâs discretion.
Alex09464367@reddit
Hong Kong very happy with the CCP /s and Tibet is very happy being forced very annexed, and the Uygur people love their 'reeducation ~~concentration~~ camps'. And because CCP claims Taiwan I'm sure they would the control of the CCP compared to their freedom now.

Alex09464367@reddit
Calling China a multi party democracy because of those eight minor parties is incredibly disingenuous. As organisations like Freedom House and the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) document, these minor parties belong to the CCP controlled United Front. They are legally forbidden from acting as a true opposition or challenging CCP rule; they are a political rubber stamp.
Your claims about a bottom up village voting system are an idealised textbook fantasy that completely collapses when tested in the real world. In theory, citizens can stand for local elections. In practice, any candidate who isn't hand picked and pre-approved by the Party is aggressively crushed. Look no further than BBC News trying to report on Liu Huizhen, an ordinary citizen who tried to exercise her legal right to stand as an independent local candidate. The state deployed dozens of plainclothes thugs to blockade her inside her own home and physically assault journalists to keep them away. When the BBC managed to return after the farcical election was over, government minders stepped in to cut off the interview because answering simple questions about democracy was too dangerous for her safety. That isn't a democracy, it is voter suppression via state sponsored thuggery.
If the system is so reflective of the people's will, why does the CCP spend billions on an unparalleled domestic security, surveillance, and internet censorship apparatus? The grim reality in Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang shows exactly what happens to ethnic minorities or regions when their 'will' doesn't perfectly align with Beijing's. In fact, a landmark assessment by the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) explicitly concluded that China's arbitrary detention and treatment of Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities in Xinjiang may constitute international crimes, specifically crimes against humanity.
There is a reason Taiwan fiercely protects its independence; they know the difference between actual democratic freedom and an authoritarian state trying to rebrand itself.

Depending on the crime you can lose either passive or active voting rights in Germany too!
The active rights (to vote for someone) can be lost basically if you commit treason, if you plan a war of aggression, if you bribe representatives.
The passive rights (to get voted for) can be lost for committing serious crimes (5+ years).

Hot-Championship1190@reddit
There are few countries where there is the broad census amongst the major political parties that their ethnicity is the defining factor and should rule above all. zlex@reddit
I for one am shocked, shocked, I say that there are no popular parties in Israel who support the destruction of their own state and peoples, and that a nation with a massive voting block who were ethnically cleansed from Muslim majority countries don't want to be a minority in a Muslim majority country.
This is riveting political analysis.
cambeiu@reddit
And yet they protest against the encroaching of women's rights and whatnot.
If you believe God gave you the land, then you have to take the whole package with it. You don't get to customize theocracy.
If the holy book is right about the land ownership, then it is right about everythign else too. That is the Faustian deal that every Israeli woman signed up for.
This applies to non-religious Israelis too. An ethno-state by its very definition rejects the notion of universal unalienable rights and equality under the law. In an ethno-state, some humans are considered more than others. If this rationale can be applied based on ethnicity, the same logic can apply just as much to gender. So if you support the idea of an ethno-state, don't be surprised that your rights are eventually curtailed too. That goes with the territory.
meister2983@reddit

themightycatp00@reddit
Almost every "jewish" party, even the likud, has seats reserved for non jews and specificly arabs.
Anti zionism isn't popular in Israel because it's an ideology that says Israel shouldn't exist, there isn't anything radical about opposing the idea the country shouldn't exist you're welcome to show me which modern country has a ruling party that opposes it's existence.
HockeyHocki@reddit
That's just false, the Democrats would form an alliance with arab parties. The issue is more a function of most of the Arab parties being explicitly antizionist, which in Israel is about as radical a position as it gets
FudgeAtron@reddit
For many years the Arab parties boycotted sitting in government to protest the existence of Israel. In 2021, Mansour Abbas the head of Raam (the Muslim Brotherhood in Israel), announced that he would be willing to sit in any government including Netanyahu's. This led Netanyahu to agree and try and court him, that failed and Abbas sat with the opposition which is how we got the Bennett-Lapid government in 2021.
Since October 7 many people don't want to work with Raam due to several controversial statements down playing the severity of October 7 by Raam MKs. However according to current polls it would be impossible to form an anti-Netanyahu government without Raam. The other Arab parties and Raam united to recreate the Joint List, which increased their seat total from 10 to 15 just by consolidating votes. Raam are expected to receive 5/6 of those 15 seats which would make them key in forming a government.
But Raam themselves are also hesitent because if they join a government they will be stuck supporting the war as part of the government which is not popular with their voters. This means you could end up with Israel going back to elections because the Arabs won't sit with either side and the Jewish parties can't unite to form a coalition.
In any normal situation, the Likud would oust Netanyahu to avoid a government realiant on Islamist support, but he has such a tight grip on the party that that will never happen.
meister2983@reddit

What a surprise, I thought Netanyahu was so hated in Israel? It's just another reminder that this isn't a Netanyahu problem or a Ben-Gvir problem. It's a societal issue, the same way it was in Apartheid South Africa. As far as his foreign policy goes, Netanyahu enjoys widespread domestic support. The only protests are against his domestic corruption, but even those died out as Israel started invading multiple countries.
