GPU roasted for a few minutes. What do?

I recently upgraded to an Asus 5070ti and it’s been amazing so far. But earlier tonight I left my game running for maybe five minutes while I stepped away and when I came back I noticed the GPU temp in HWmonitor was 99°. This also showed in GPU tweak III. Looking at the game it was at 55fps with frame gen which it normally runs at around 100 so I presume the thermal protections had kicked in.
I immediately shut the game off and cranked the fans to max and it cooled down quickly. I’ve had the card about four months now and under full load the highest temp I ever saw was 78.1°.
My best guess digging through logs was that the fan profile wasn’t in place because the program died, or the 0dB setting got stuck on even though I’ve had it disabled. I don’t know. It just seems like the fans got stuck on low/off/space heater setting for whatever reason.
I setup a manual, aggressive fan curve and played some more with temps never getting above 73°.
I’ve downloaded HWinfo so I can have alarms in place, but what other steps can I take or software that will help ensure this doesn’t happen again? Short of something easy and out of the box I’m thinking of just building a PS script to monitor that the GPU fan controller software is responding during gaming sessions and shut down the PC otherwise.
Any insight or advice?

I have a 3080 and I experienced same thing 3 years ago; don't worry about it just make sure you're using a reliable app to control your gpu fan!

What do you currently use? Prior to using GPU Tweak I had EVGA X Precision and that never once had a problem in like seven years.

At that time I used my gpu manufacturer app and it caused that issue, after that I'm using the MSI afterburner till now and never had a problem with it.

If things get to hot they turn off you'll be fine

Sure. I just don’t like the idea of (what I currently presume to be) a software glitch shutting off the main cooling to my GPU.

Do you have software installed that might be touching that fan curve? If so, reset the settings in that software, or just remove it. The GPU absolutely should have kicked its fans in by the time it got that hot unless there was a software or firmware glitch.

I've double checked and I only have GPU Tweak III installed. I used to use EVGA X Precision when I had an EVGA card, but I uninstalled that and used the Asus program figuring to keep in 'in house' so to speak.
I guess at this point all signs point to a glitch that hopefully remains a one off. I've set up HWinfo to just run a shutdown of the PC if it catches the temps over 85. Maybe that's too aggressive but like I said in the post, this card hit an absolute peak of 78.1 across every game I've played. If it's above 85 something funny is happening.

I’ll double check. I was sure I only had GPU Tweak III before tonight. But maybe something else is still lingering.

That's fine, I had a 580 gtx back in the day that would get to 90-100c under extreme loads and it survived for years. Seems like all your precautions are in place.

Dw, I crashed my pc 8 times a few days ago while overclocking my 5070ti and everything is fine.
