On one hand it’s a beautiful unique color and I love it. But every other color is so drab this feels like such a wasted opportunity.
pdp10@reddit
Paint colors are the most arbitrary, the least cost-differentiated matter, that still matters greatly to dealers and buyers. I'm sure that auto executives are pretty terrified of getting their color palettes wrong, and losing 10% of sales to a rival, over a decision that's clearly theirs to make and which they can't blame on the economy or suppliers.
SqueezyCheez85@reddit
I'm surprised Mazda doesn't branch out. Their primary audience consists of middle aged women. Middle aged women love cute, fun colors. Look at Jeep and the colors they have.
Easy-End-2852@reddit
Is this true?
SqueezyCheez85@reddit
Every CX-5 advertisement I've seen is marketed towards women.
Easy-End-2852@reddit
I thought you were talking about the Miata? Although women control 70-85% of all spending in the USA so I understand marketing is typically directed towards women.
SqueezyCheez85@reddit
Mazda picks the paint colors that are the most popular. The CX-5 is the most popular.
Easy-End-2852@reddit
Different models can have different colors.
SqueezyCheez85@reddit
It's just significantly more expensive to do that, so they often don't.
turningsteel@reddit
Yeah a bright yellow or a true bright red would be nice. Soul red is like 'I wanna be bold, but I'm scared what people might think'.
Hell, any bright color would be nice.
SqueezyCheez85@reddit
I'm with you. Soul Red looks great in the half hour of a sunny day when the light hits it just right. The other 23½ hours, it looks like a dark, boring red.
A_Sinclaire@reddit
The 2019 30th Anniversary Miata in a bright orange likely would be for you then
SqueezyCheez85@reddit
That's the only other Miata I'd give up my Classic Red NA for.
zalcecan@reddit
Id be surprised if anyone would prefer a flat brighter red over mazdas soul crystal red.
Wolfsangel-Dragon@reddit
He's wearing the same colored T-shirt.
HitTheApexHitARock2@reddit
Thank god
Drzhivago138@reddit
A friend of mine has a pickup in a similar color to this. GM calls it "Cypress Gray".
GeoffKingOfBiscuits@reddit
I don't get it, why Dorothy?
tallon4@reddit
I legitimately thought the photo in the article was shot in black and white or had been intentionally desaturated or photographed in infrared. Very disappointing
ettieredgotobed@reddit
Before she gets to Oz, everything is black and white.
GeoffKingOfBiscuits@reddit
Doh, It's been a long time since I saw that movie.
LongjumpingLock5875@reddit (OP)
The Wizard of Oz famously starts in Sepia in the opening sequence, and then shifts to full color after a tornado.
He is saying that all the people picking new colors for the miata can only see in shades of gray.
NanderK@reddit
He is basically the most recognized authority on car colours at this point.
_galaga_@reddit
But not colors, only colours.
coffeeshopslut@reddit
Mazda's have notoriously thin paint right? So it's boring AND weak?
DM725@reddit
To anyone that thinks this is straight up gray after downloading the high res photo then it's your display or your eyes.
It's a dull green and I like it.
Krispythecat@reddit
I am still a little bitter about Mazda overlooking the opportunity to bring back British Racing Green in 2011 & 2021
MakesYourMise@reddit
army brats going to love this
pleated_pants@reddit
It reminds me of a greener version of the "Dolphin Gray" Mazda 3 I had in 2013, which I loved. Im all for more different types of greens in the auto market. I feel like Meet the Parents really deflated green cars in the market.
pdp10@reddit
It matches my zinc phosphated hardware. Sold!
Tumbleweedwhacker@reddit
Somebody show them the full spectrum.
How about screaming yellow, ridiculous red, intense blue or acid green? No? Then it's a wrap again.
rhunter99@reddit
I miss when cars came in vibrant colours
sarcasticorange@reddit
It does come in red and blue.
parker2020@reddit
Finally drove an ND. Boys I get it now 😭😭. But this color is the epitome of melancholy
420khz@reddit
That’s slickkkk, wonder why they didn’t go with the cypress green they have for the 50
3PoundsOfFlax@reddit
I freaking love it and don't understand the hate
CMDR_omnicognate@reddit
I know muted colours tend to sell better but like, come on, it’s a sports car, give us more interesting colours that aren’t just for special editions
colin_staples@reddit
"Pretty"
Huh.
Tango91@reddit
Is the pretty colour in the room with us?
reward72@reddit
Has fun been banned? A sign of the times I guess.
ScipioAfricanvs@reddit
The color options for the ND are grim. There’s something about having the most affordable, playful roadster on the market and not having fun colors that’s just so very Mazda today.
AwesomeBantha@reddit
I love how the most interesting recent Miata color is a shade of brown
PossiblyAsian@reddit
agreed... the most interesting color if the miata is red which was released when it was released.... 12 years ago.
it should be blue, green, yellow, etc. colors that pop. It's supposed to be a fun car but instead it's just this biege
UmaThurmish@reddit
its a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy when it comes to the ND
It looks like it was designed for an old person, they also give it gray colors only. metallic ontop of it too.
so only old people buy the thing. and then they tell people oh only 60 year olds buy it, I mean yeah no shit. the NA miata was popular among all age groups because it was a cute little car that looked funny. the new ND is a bit too serious and grown up
tunderama@reddit
Greyn / Greey is the new Greige
Shienvien@reddit
Makes me regret I didn't buy the bright metallic neon orange Civic for sale near me.
Mazda makes such a nice red, too. Pity that green got left out.
FalconTurbo@reddit
Why am I feeling alone in liking this? It's greyish in that shot but it's definitely greener than 'totally monochrome' that others are saying.
StrongOnline007@reddit
Always love to see the latest from Mazda's "Oops It's Not Quite Grey" color development lab
Pretty is a stretch
atomicskiracer@reddit
They spent all their color funding for the next 10 years in soul red
willpc14@reddit
Explains why this color is basically paint primer
Greekphysed@reddit
Worth it
stupidber@reddit
Thats so gray
Humillionaire@reddit
I mean you really have to see any paint in person to judge it
_larsr@reddit
I really hope it looks better in person, because the picture makes it look like more gray crap. ☹️
Successful-Bank-8882@reddit
Some pics from the miata subreddit. it looks better in photos, but I need to see it in person
Spicywolff@reddit
“Pretty” new sure but not “pretty new” it’s another gray bordering on a slight shade of color sprinkled on
876oy8@reddit
mazda offering such shades of bland that i think I'd be exctatic seeing one in a nice silver.
AndreLeGeant88@reddit
Let's make a fun affordable sports car look as dull as possible
MaybeNext-Monday@reddit
You could park a gray car in a forest on a sunny day and it would look greener than that.
sectachrome@reddit
Look at the bright side, they’re still making the ND in 2027
Mother____Clucker@reddit
I'm digging the paint. But the top color is AWFUL. It needs something to warm it up, like a brown top/interior.
