Anyone know any good sources of .32 short black powder rounds?

I acquired an Iver Johnson top break revolver last year for an ounce of Silver and have had a very difficult time with getting ammo. Does anyone know any reliable and trustworthy sites to buy from?

I thought black powder pistols you load the powder and bullet into the open end of the cylinder and a percussion cap into the office in the rear. No cartridge involved. Maybe a different cylinder for that, idk.

Those are percussion cap revolvers which fell out of favor by the end of the 1860s. Black powder cartridge guns were made until the end of the 1890s or so

Due to the age of the gun they have to be black powder rounds since the barrel wouldn't be proofed for the pressure of smokeless

I've never played with black powder, but couldn't you load smokeless powder to the reduced pressure?
Hodgdon has data for HP-38 in .32 S&W at 9500 CUP, an 85 grain projectile pushing 595 fps through a 3" barrel...

You can but with the tiny amount of smokeless used in those equivalent loads theres the risk of overcharges from an out of calibration scale and double and even triple overcharges are possible if you make a mistake. Black powder is by far the safest route.

starline makes brass, several companies make bullets, and black powder isnt too hard to find. commercially loaded ammo is going to be hard to find and expensive, this gun would be better served by reloading, unless youre just going to shoot a few rounds a year.

Isn't that something you research before getting a gun?

So thats who got the gunbroker bid.

There isnt one.

Same problem, bro.

Make your own.

Definitely buy a hand loader. If you buy bulk, you can get empty brass for as low as 23 cents each.

Like .32-20? Ammoseek is your pal
Tbh buy a modern repro to test ammo on if possible before putting anything live through that

32 S&W. Luckily that round doesn't have enough room for enough black powder to get into trouble unless you're using 4f or 5f priming/ fuse powder. Its the big roomy BP cases like 577 Snider and 577-450 where you have to be more careful

FWIW - I’d probably look at buying Lee Precision’s hand press and a set of dies if I was in your shoes.

Buffalo arms has a listing however its currently oit of stock

Not helpful, but any gun for ~$33 give or take last year is a good deal to me.

I picked up the silver round for around 40 bucks and traded when it was selling for around 98-100 dollars. To good of a deal not to pass up

Load your own. Case full of FFFg and a 00 buckshot ball seated on top makes good plinking loads. The big thing with black powder is no air space so thats why you fill the case and let the ball or bullet compress the powder a bit.
Franticalmond2@reddit
Yeah, you buy a reloading press and make them.
