Controversial opinion. Almost all employers are unable to pay you what they actually want to pay you.

Only reason I got a raise was because I was just about out the door , and I knew damn well that if that didn’t happen, I never would have gotten it

Same exact scenario ijust had happen

Companies want to pay you nothing. Paying wages is a necessary evil to corporate America. But keep buying the "We would like to pay you more but we can't afford it" bullshit. You're just the type they're looking for.

Most trucking companies are not anything close to being a part of corporate America.

The easiest way to tell is how they salivate at the thought of driverless trucks. All the profit of operating trucks, but without having to pay drivers.
It's also not just trucking companies. The whole AI bubble is built around the idea that it will become good enough to replace all workers.

They can. But then they'd only make 2.99 billion a year instead of 3 billion, and that’s simply unacceptable.

Knight-Swift had an operating income of $28.6 million in Q1.
They also have ~35,000 employees.
That means that if the company distributed every dollar it made to the employees, they would have each received about $820 extra in Q1...or about $63/week.
Also, operating income is whats left after taking actual hard costs out of the revenue. That doesn't account for long term equipment depreciation, deferred building maintenance, etc.
Sure, a big corporation like that can afford to give you whatever you want, but they can't afford to give everyone a $100/week raise.

Our company’s been supposedly operating at a loss the last few years, but we’re privately owned by a pair of billionaires. They’ve got almost 20 other companies in their capital group, and have vertically integrated many of us (essentially giving business to themselves).

In related party transactions, they often will price shop it just to prove everything is above board.
The business that needs shipments moved likely asks local and mega carriers for quotes, then "offers" the freight at the lowest qualified rate to your employer. Your employer then takes that rate and runs it.
It would not surprise me if they were legitimately running at a loss because many others were likewise running at a loss.
Imagine you had fixed overhead of $10 million annually for truck loans, mortgages, property taxes, etc. You may be positioned such that running your business leaves you net -$1 million on the year, but keeps the employees happy, the doors open, and the lights on for when the market rebounds. Alternatively if everything is just "moth balled" you lose $10 million on the year and if/when you want to start up again you need to rehire/retrain everyone. The last option would be to liquidate everything...then you'd have to start all over again.
Sometimes running at a loss for a few years is legitimately the best option.

We hear you but let’s take a look at operating costs.
They can spend money to make it seem like they are struggling.
This was the issue with the NBA when it first started and now it’s the WNBA. People like to say the WNBA doesn’t make any money but that’s because the owners are better off spending a shit ton of money on advertising and useless things (not saying advertising is useless but spending more than they need to is) , that way on paper they look like their operating costs are way too high and they justify that reason to pay them little.
This is why the NBA moved to percentage of revenue made. Recently the WNBA also moves to this model that way the owners don’t constantly say they are spending more.

Don't ask too much, shut up & be grateful they give you what they do and it would be great to say a really big "thanks boss" for your Xmas bonus!
firemarshalbill316@reddit
They actually don't want to pay you any and keep ever for themselves. That being said. Always look for ways to improve your and become more marketable.
You don't have to settle for just driving jobs. There a lots of other jobs to do in the transportation industry.
Personally if I was one of those billionaires I wouldn't want to pay anyone that much either. I have a yacht to maintain. 😂
But for real though. They do the same thing we do just in reverse. They don't want to pay i'us alot of money and we do want to accept low wages. Same greed different shoes.
And go!
