When I was around 13, the arcade in the mall had people standing in line to play Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat. I was a fan. Is anyone watching either upcoming movie? Wheres your alliance if you had to pick just 1.

despite being jaded—i'm absolutely going to check out the movies.
the most recent MK felt like a solid 7/10, and it sounds like they took fan feedback into account, so I'm definitely giving it a chance.
Mortal Kombat is also pure nostalgia. First arcade game I remember going crazy for back in the early 90's at my neighborhood Round Table, and the first film came out when I was a freshman and we all went to see it.
jjkarate@reddit
I love both of the games and the 90s movies. Both of the new MK movies are amazing. The new SF movie looks fun but I refuse to spend money on anything involving Andrew Schultz, so I'll catch it on streaming.
TiEmEnTi@reddit
More of a Tekken man in the arcade myself. Street Fighter at home probably more hours total though.
Both movies look worse than the already bad 90s ones.
SquirrelCone83@reddit
I'm worried about how SF looks. I hope the fight choreography is good and the movie uses music inspired by the legendary SF soundtrack.
MK2 was fun. Right up there with the original from the 90s. Which MK movie I think is better probably just depends on which day you ask me, lots to love about each.
TrustAffectionate966@reddit
I went to see the OG 90s Mortal Kombat and it is waaaay better than the two new MK movies, even if the latter are more faithful to the source material. I’ve seen Street Fighter II, The Animated movie at San Diego Comic Con back in the 90s - that one was good (I even bought it on VHS and BRD). The live-action version SUCKED, so I hope the new version doesn’t suck hahah.

I skipped that line and played at the less popular puzzle fighter cabinet.
I don't need to see any more movies after the perfection of the anime.
Juls_Santana@reddit
I've gotten more enjoyment from the MK series, by far. SF is iconic/classic, but so is MK and the campaigns in the various games as well as the movies were generally more entertaining
skinnyminnesota@reddit
I gotta say the Street Fighter trailer makes it look like it's found the right amount of silly. I'm intrigued.
borkbork234@reddit
It seems over the top which is great. I was not too sure about the change of lyrics in 2Pacs Ambitionz as a ridah to “I can’t deny it, I’m a street fightah “
yinchanvo@reddit
Like them both equally, have all the games on PC and engage with whatever media they are on.
From my experiences in school, SF fans were more snobby about combos and strategy, while MK was all about hunting secrets and gore.
MK has better lore and story modes, but SF has Chun-Li, so........
Aught_To@reddit
Ill take Killer Instinct.

Hell yes. I love all these old school fights games but KI maybe had my favorite actual fighting mechanics of them all.
TollyVonTheDruth@reddit
YESSS! Cinder is my guy. I kicked so much ass with him and made it look easy.
zombie_overlord@reddit
My brother could get like 75 hit combos with the barbarian dude on KI Gold

BIO Freaks for me
BehavioralSink@reddit
They really need to revive that series and get rid of the XBox exclusivity.
EricRShelton@reddit
Movies? Don’t care.
Games? I’m still a big Street Fighter fan. SF6 is so good!
big_z_0725@reddit
I just bought a Switch 2 and SF6. As someone who mostly played the MSDOS port of SF2 (which was…not good), I feel completely overwhelmed with 6.
zombie_overlord@reddit
I was pretty good at 2, but now, (and same with MK) there's so many guys to choose from, how do you even pick one or even get good with a few? It is kind of overwhelming.
shrikelet@reddit
I've been playing Ryu for 35 years now and it's going okay
IAm5toned@reddit
Team Ken here!
Neither-Principle139@reddit
Ken and Zangief
EricRShelton@reddit
Hell yes!!!
EricRShelton@reddit
I hadn’t played a Street Fighter game since 2: Turbo. When they introduced Cammy, Leo Fang, etc. I was really worried I’d be out of my depth with all the new play mechanics, etc. but I feel like they did a really good job of keeping at accessible to new players. Just play World Tour and pay attention, it’ll teach you how to play the game.
Emergency-Pack-5497@reddit
Marvel vs Capcom was probably the most popular game
TheMeticulousNinja@reddit
Definitely not watching those stupid movies, but I was and am a huge Street Fighter fan. I still remember playing part 1
Suitable-Peanut@reddit
Street fighter 2 was my game for sure but the mortal Kombat movies are better.
However, I'm looking forward to getting drunk and watching the new street fighter movie because it looks bonkers in the best way.
theHollowTarnished@reddit (OP)
It has an fun vibe. Im going to possibly watch both, but id SF looks better
flaming_bob@reddit
The best worst martial arts movie ever made. That movie is so insanely quotable even today.
theHollowTarnished@reddit (OP)
I was a VanDamme fan boy. I told myself it was good at the time. Kickboxer still my favorite to this day.
lakebistcho@reddit
You'd put your quarter on the machine to show there was a line
theHollowTarnished@reddit (OP)
I say a line, but more of a crowd. There would be a few stacks of 2 qtrs. 50 cents per game. The guy that never left always used Blanca.
VinylHighway@reddit
I saw Mortal Kombat 2 and hoped it would be better than the first but it wasn't that entertaining. The martial arts was too CGI / Powers enhanced. It was pandering to "true" MK fans, but it was pretty boring.
Snow_Crash_Bandicoot@reddit
Yeah. Went and rewatched the first so I could watch both back to back and the first, while good not great, is way better than the sequel.
VinylHighway@reddit
The opening of the first is the best part and just goes downhill from there
Snow_Crash_Bandicoot@reddit
Pretty much.
EricRShelton@reddit
I heard Karl Urban suffered a spinal injury from carrying the entire weight of the film by himself.
VinylHighway@reddit
He's always a good time
Asn_Browser@reddit
I'm a SF guy, but my gawd does that movie look horrible. MK2 I actuality want to see though.
lavasca@reddit
Saw MKII twice already! Can’tcwait for Streetfighter!!!
Dimplefrom-YA@reddit
i have watched all mortal kombat movies. huge fan. i went to comicon and dressed up as kitana
TollyVonTheDruth@reddit
Nice!
theHollowTarnished@reddit (OP)
Dope
TollyVonTheDruth@reddit
I watched the latest MK, and it was pretty damn good. It kind of follows MK I. Street Fighter was fun, but MK just impressed me more. Even the SF movie trailer looks pale compared to MK. Just my opinion, of course.
OmegaRainicorn@reddit
I’m very excited for the Street Fighter movie!
Stimpinstein22@reddit
WWF WrestleFest (I swear our Aladdin’s Castle kept it until the late ‘90’s because my crew would come in as stoned 17 year olds just to play it)…
djsynrgy@reddit
Hell yeah. An old buddy (RIP) and I used to pump all our quarters into that one.
FWIW, around 2010/2011-ish, THQ made a game for Xbox360 called WWE All Stars, and it brought back that old arcade feel.
Amazing game. The base premise was creating impossible rivalries between old legends and contemporary wrestlers - complete with well-produced vignettes for each matchup.
Recommended, if you can access it via original or emulator.
kaest@reddit
SF.
AgathaAllAlong@reddit
Still remember taking a field trip and we went to the arcade for a bit and SF2 had just come out. Didn’t get to play even but we were losing our minds. It was a crowd.
Responsible_Trash_40@reddit
I was a Tekken guy
Dramatic-Card7276@reddit
That movie sucked 10 kinds of ass
weeponxing@reddit
Tekken for life
Dramatic-Card7276@reddit
KarlUrban (said as one word) could make this mortal kombat movie better than the last, and i’m not gonna lie I love Cody Rhodes as Guile (also Orville Peck as Vega), but both movies were already done perfectly, sans the sequels.
Raul Julia as M. Bison is peak. The fact that he took the role for his kids is even more awesome. Also JCVD.
6thBornSOB@reddit
Member putting your quarters up on the lip at the bottom of the screen to show you were next. Shit would be full the week after a new fighter came out!
No idea why, but I always felt like such a lil bad-ass.
hybbprqag@reddit
I'll watch all of them tbh, they're always entertaining even if the writing isn't good.
-Benpachi-@reddit
Street Fighter 2, went to the arcade almost every day after school.
RawWulf@reddit
Just got out of the theater after watching MK2
Lebowski304@reddit
Street Fighter was the OG. I was amazed at how good people were and how they could do that fucking flying uppercut with Ken/ryu so easily!
Adrasteia-One@reddit
I loved Mortal Kombat I and II, but Street Fighter II was still my favorite. I'm sure a big reason is the nostalgia factor.
Apart_Pineapple2392@reddit
At my arcade it was Mortal kombat or killer instinct. I'd have a line out the door, play for hours on 1 quarter on MK.
nipslippinjizzsippin@reddit
Streetfighter 2 was my first fighter. But growing up i was a soul caliber guy... they had titty jiggle physics
theHollowTarnished@reddit (OP)
Prib hit pause on a few Chun Li kicks. We did. Lol
nipslippinjizzsippin@reddit
Boys will be boys
SylancerPrime@reddit
I watched Mortal Kombat II, I WILL be watching Street Fighter, and still play Street Fighter 6 regularly. I really don't want to just pick one, they're both part of my childhood and helped frame my love of fighting games.
Related, isn't it wild how BOTH 90's movies give us such iconic performances for the villains? We can ignore their sequel and reboot, but those OGs... damn, how'd we get both of those?!!
Gonna_do_this_again@reddit
I liked Street Fighter because it was sooo much easier than MK
theHollowTarnished@reddit (OP)
It was. I remember trying for days to learn the mortal kombats Fatality finisher with scorpion and found out years later, it was edited out of the the super Nintendo version. Sega kids got to see it.
Gonna_do_this_again@reddit
Can you imagine the social media "discourse" that would happen today if one console decided to remove the coolest part of a game and another one didn't?
ApatheistHeretic@reddit
SF2. However, movies based on video games have always been ass..
greatswordstudios@reddit
I played and enjoyed both series. But if i have to make Sophie’s Choice … Street Fighter.
Babyspiker@reddit
MK II > SF 2 > MK I
Street fighter was the better fighting game originally. Mortal Kombat brought the novelty of blood and fatalities.
Then MK II out them both together.
AcceptablyPotato@reddit
SF2 just cause my friend had it for his SNES. I always thought MK looked awesome back then, but just never really got to play it.
Mysterious-Name-6016@reddit
I love both franchises. I'm a big gamer and street fighter 2 was the first time I got obsessed with a game. The first time I played mortal kombat an older kid did sub zero's head rip fatality to me and I was so shook 🤣 Looking forward to both movies.
Naive-Boysenberry613@reddit
That whole forced rivalry between 2 similar franchises has always been a scam and means to drum up discussions for the sake of staying relevant. Often times advertisers and even the franchise owners are the ones behind pushing these kind of narratives subliminally.
It's silly to even consider "alliances" for video games if you really think about it. Especially if both products are good.
The truth is you can enjoy both. Remember NES vs Sega thing? It was complete schoolyard kiddy nonsense in hindsight.
Rhizobactin@reddit
Idk. I was He-Man and SF2. I’m probably going to wait until they both are available on the seas before I see either one (or both), but not sure which one I’d ever pay money to see with the kids.
I still have PTSD from shitty trailers from TMNT as a kid to EVER consider going to video-game’s movie
Grizzlyadamsbrother@reddit
Put my quarter down, I got next
Futant55@reddit
Those movies look cool but I always wanted to be He-Man so that’s my movie priority
al_rey503@reddit
I still Play Street Fighter and I love WWE so the movie is goin g to be a no brainer for me even though it’s going to be bad in the best way.
FriedBreakfast@reddit
What's bizarre to me was back in the day we joked that Street Fighter couldn't count to 3. We had Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Super Street Fighter 2, then Street Fighter Alpha, Alpha 2, Ex, Ex2, Ex2 plus A.....
Meanwhile Mortal Kombat went on to Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat 4....
Then to Deadly Alliance, Deception, Armageddon then... Mortal Kombat. Then Mortal Kombat X, then Mortal Kombat 11 and then... Mortal Kombat 1.
Meanwhile Street Fighter did go on to 3, 4, 5, 6....
They did a complete reversal
shiftdown@reddit
The street fighter movie looks so extra. My buddies and I are all going together
therealpopkiller@reddit
I cannot wait for the Streer Fighter movie. It looks insane in all the best ways.
VisiblePlatform6704@reddit
MK for me. Although i loved both of them!! And i was pretty good locally.
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit
We never needed a line: our Street Fighter 2 cabinet was in the bowling alley and usually was either free or being used by one player.
