"I got a friggin' muscle spasm in my back, gear slipped, air brakes were shot to hell. I mean, there's nothin' I could do. Boom, right into the post office."
You lay on the tank to lower the center of gravity.
You’re not going to be holding onto the handles to manipulate the throttle and clutch during a tank slapper. You either lay flat on the tank and slow down, or you break your wrists and lay flat on the tank to slow down with broken wrists.
Right. Have you ever seen a tank slapper? Good luck trying to hold onto those handles while controlling the throttle. There’s a reason people slow down when that starts happening, it’s either slow down or break your wrists and slow down anyway.
There’s correct response is to lay on the tank to lower the center of gravity.
Wabco trailer EBS units have had a system for detecting and mitigating this very phenomenon for more than 20 years now, it’s called RSS roll stability support or something like that. Anyway it kicks in the rear trailer brakes automatically to stabilize it, you can find demos on YouTube. Other manufacturers should have it too.
Who are we talking about? The log truck, or the guy that knows something very unsafe is about to happen, and they are about to be a part of the accident recording them?
Yeah but not from a moving truck, they have a whole segment about it in the movie behind the scenes, the director was super annoyed that the real logs didn't bounce so they just made it up for the scene
The wiggling trailer is the second or third trailer behind the truck. Each additional trailer reacts more violently to harsh inputs up front. It's often called "cracking the whip" because the energy compounds.
This is very uncommon with B-trains (not a common configuration in the US), but it is a fundamental problem with A-trains (the most common doubles/triples you see in the US).
Aggravating factors were the load is very heavy and very tall, and it was on a winding road.
Steps to minimize the chance of this happening would be to slow way down (BEFORE this happens), avoid rapid/suddenly turns or swerving, and have each trailer noticeably lighter than the one in front of it
How to correct it once it's going is don't slow down with the truck brakes or engine brake. Stay on the throttle to maintain speed and pull the trolley handle with slowly increasing pressure. Once it stops wiggling, then slow down gently.
If you watch the video carefully, the wiggling is stable until the driver slows down, then it escalates and causes the load to eject. That will always be the case.
Or he explains very calmly at the time but then screams like a crazy person at the bar because holy hell that was a close shave. Or maybe that's just me and stressful situations.
All log trucks are mandated to have a "headache rack" which is a huge metal plate behind the cab. Outside of sudden force from slamming into the ditch or hitting another equally heavy vehicle, there is no way any logs will have enough G forces to pierce those things.
For real though, when you see a log truck hit something head on and the logs do pierce the rack, holy hell those pics are out of a horror movie
Cnother great song. Very southern. Dad's rolling that garden hose in the backyard. Bro's eating chocolate pie. Mommas cutting chicken up to fry and he's with charlotte Johnson on the front porch just a swangin.
He was lumbering along, clearly board, pineing for a better gig. Unfortunately he was a son of a birch whose bark was worse than his bite, a knotty boy indeed, and wooden you know it, he'll now have to branch out into a different career.
Involving the magical phrase "would you like fries with that?"
I pull reefer but that guy was definitely not paying attention. When the trailer start swaying it’s time to slow down, stop, fix the problem, and then finish the delivery. There’s no way I’d just hammer down if my trailer was doing that all the way down the road. I do reefer and I know immediately when something isn’t right. My guess is that they were loaded too heavy in the back. The logical solution would be to get that problem fixed but at minimum tie down the load and drive slower so the trailer doesn’t swing wildly side to side.

It doesn’t apply to motorcycles either.

That's easy: crash. That's what I did, and it immediately stopped!
LucHighwalker@reddit
It does actually. You want to get weight off the front. Ideally pop a wheelie. The only time that it's the right thing to do.

Right. Have you ever seen a tank slapper? Good luck trying to hold onto those handles while controlling the throttle. There’s a reason people slow down when that starts happening, it’s either slow down or break your wrists and slow down anyway.
