Do you feel like you can’t have fun?

I’m 45.
i was told off recently for clapping at a rock concert.
i then went to a bar and was dancing on the dance floor by myself when someone asked if i was on drugs. This was in Newcastle. It seems others were just sitting on their phones.
Music makes me happy but others are making me a little self conscious.
Maybe you can suggest places in the UK for people in their 40s who won’t get judged. Maybe I should just stay at home.

Honestly, this whole "joy is cringe" shit is probably a symptom of the biggest issue with modern society. I see it all the time, go to a gig and people are just stood at the back half paying attention, half scrolling on their phones like they're watching fucking Newsnight.
Get me to a gig where everyone puts their phone away and enjoys the bloody moment, you don't get too many of them before you die.

True and I think it got worse post covid.

Fuck em.
Enjoy yourself.
I'd prefer to go to a gig with someone who dances, claps and embraces the moment, than someone who sits in their phone.

Go to a rave mate, take drugs 🕺🪩
Tefached666@reddit
Don't even need drugs tbf, but sounds like he would have more fun there than wherever he is going out now

Where abouts in Newcastle were you? From history that definitely doesn’t sound like the Toon! Most Geordies are well up for a dance
jenni_jen85@reddit
This! I was surprised as a Geordie myself we are usually up there joining in!

Oh I’m Newcastle based I thought it would be the best place for it with our night life! But then again maybe it’s just the bar. Maybe check for some 80’s nights if that’s what your into (from comments) and you’ll have a different experience I’m sure! Always plenty of those types of events going on :)

Get yourself down shields. Plenty dancing in the pubs.

10 years ago, I was at a bar in Thesolaniki. Not a single young person drank or looked at each other.. I never bothered to check in London but I think Gen Z everywhere has caught this disease now.
Independent-Middle22@reddit
Move to London:)
CumGuzlinGutterSluts@reddit
Show em who's what. Get like 5 pills of E, some acid and a syringe of meth, go back there, and dance till a taskforce is made to stop you

I hate today’s society. Nobody can seem to have fun without someone else having a problem with it. In my opinion, just carry on enjoying life and don’t worry about what other people think.

Yea, last time I was in a mosh pit at a rock concert people were getting upset at the moshing. As if it was abnormal antisocial behaviour.
Social media has built and enforced the fear of standing out from the crowd. Social etiquette constructed by the lowest common denominator.

i’m sorry people had to project their insecurities onto you! if you’re looking for a proper night out with friends or even solo i’d suggest the gay village in manchester!! there’s always something on and people are so so welcoming <3
noivernd@reddit
Some people are just melts mate. I’m 15 and people do this when you do something like try to have fun. Dance around and do what you want. being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t have fun. Sounds like you’re just cooler than them all
MojoMomma76@reddit
Nah, you're just going to the wrong places. I'm 48 and danced last night with my husband to Hozier in our lovely local in London, whilst our friends cheered, clapped and filmed. I routinely go to gigs in the city and howl along with everyone else. Pick better venues 😄
Humanracer45@reddit (OP)
You could be right. I’m into 80s bands and music but maybe I need to look at something more modern lol
MojoMomma76@reddit
There are some awesome day gigs in London for this kind of stuff if you’re local? And Rivoli Ballroom in Brockley is brilliant
Morris_Alanisette@reddit
Fuck 'em. Dancing is joy. If you feel like it do it. Life's too short to care about what other people think of you. It took me way too long to realise that. Do what makes you happy.
Evening-Youth-8558@reddit
You get one life, live it how you want, doesn't matter what other people think, if that makes you happy then do that. I know I'd rather be up dancing like nobody's watching than staring at a phone screen.....probably watching tiktok dances.
noname2808559@reddit
Kitchen discos! I never leave the house 😂
Meta-Fox@reddit
If I saw someone having fun and not being a nusciance to anyone else, I'd join them.
CurrencyIll9145@reddit
do not stay at home! must be the wrong crowd. london gets a bad rap for lots of things but how one expresses themselves in a pub or club is not one of them.
likewise, i'm in the south west, if you go to a 'proper' pub, no one cares what you do if you're not bothering anybody. in fact, you're likely to make a few mates!
don't let anyone make you feel foolish for being you. you sound awesome
