Let go in the worst possible time, how do I get back?

Partially career, partially AI/LLM.
I was let go 5 weeks ago from not-a-FAANG-but-still-big. Officially through PIP, but I’m pretty sure they were also trying to just eliminate my position. I’ve been applying to multiple companies and the response is… underwhelming. I know the market is in a weird place, I know there are still layoffs and more and more engineers showing up.
Here’s the question though: what skills should I brush up? It’s not my first iteration of “revolutionary tools”, but it’s kinda hard navigating through the whole AI ecosystem, especially since it’s obviously a bubble and everyone is trying to get a piece of cake.
What are the tools and libraries that a software engineer uses, including AI? I’ve been using Codex extensively, but willing to try others. I’ve been implementing my own MCP, my own agent with DSPy, what should I know?
Any video courses/tutorials that give breakdown of skills?

Rule 3: No General Career Advice
This sub is for discussing issues specific to experienced developers.
Any career advice thread must contain questions and/or discussions that notably benefit from the participation of experienced developers. Career advice threads may be removed at the moderators discretion based on response to the thread."
General rule of thumb: If the advice you are giving (or seeking) could apply to a “Senior Chemical Engineer”, it’s not appropriate for this sub.

Long term, understanding how a computer works in a granular level better than other people is still the best bet. Short term ride the wave AI the shit out of everything.
