Just passing this along. It's money that may never have made it you you that the state is in possession of. Very easy to claim.

Not always easy. My mom is on the list and she doesn’t have the certificate they want to see to give it to her.

What is the certificate for?

Stock

Who the hell still has stock certificates? Silly agency

The part that puzzles me, is this is property that they say belong to her. But they won't give it to her because she can't prove she owns the thing they say she owns.

I keep getting 3rd party mail about this. Is it the same thing? They say the comptroller has it, but my family thinks it’s a scam since it’s a decent amount, still small though. They ask for like 10%.
I figure I would just go to this site but I have no idea how to proceed or if I’m getting scammed

Could be a scam, most likely not. Companies\people scrape unclaimed property records and go try to reunite the property for a percentage. I suggest you do it yourself. You can go search yourself at Texas's site. This one searches most states all at once. It's safe and ran by a mix of ex state officials and industry professionals.

There are some scams about companies reaching out after you bought a house. I think its called the homestead act. If its about a newly purchased house. Scam for sure.

If it’s a third party and not the State of Texas, it’s either a scam or someone positioning it like a service where they file the paperwork for you in exchange for a cut of whatever you’re owed. You can easily do it yourself for free, so paying someone else to do it on your behalf is a waste of money.
