Worst high school event in Plano?

Hey ya'll, I'm a transplant from Chicago and moved here several years ago, due to a job. As I was watching the jury selection news on Karmelo Anthony today (please no comments on whether he did it or not, that's not the reason for this post), I was wondering if anything really polarizing that happened in a Plano high school became a nationwide debate point? This town seems so quiet and safe, couldn't imagine anything like that happening here, but just curious. My family loves it here and plan on making this home base for the foreseeable future.

Not high school but there was the incident at Haggard Middle School in 2021 involving a 13 year old.

I didn't grow up in Texas but I heard about this game after the fact. The 1994 playoff game between John Tyler and Plano East where Plano East cameback from a 41-17 deficit with 3 minus to go in the game only to lose on a last second kickoff return for TD.
It won an ESPY and is considered one of the best high school football games ever.

But yeah someone was telling me recently the heroin issue was pretty bad too growing up here

There were a few teachers at Plano West and its feeders that has relations with their students. Mostly groomers. One got caught peeking outside a 15 year old girl's window

Graduated in 92 and we where fairly prolific at killing ourselves.

There was this ONE thing, in the 90s... it was all over the national news. Oh well, that was ancient history.
one_is_enough@reddit
Why would you not just name it? Mob hitmen? Yakuza assassins? Witness protection?
MarionBarrysBarTab@reddit
I just thought the question was ridiculous and thus wanted to give a silly answer. Heroin in Plano was a HUGE thing in the 90s, a bunch of kids died, and that could very easily be discovered via a cursory Google search. There actually was a great "what was the 'the thing' that happened at your HS" thread in this sub a while back that had a pretty exhaustive list of Plano HS scandals.
one_is_enough@reddit
Well, OK. But the heroin thing wasn’t “ONE high school event”, so didn’t even make sense as an answer. It went on for years. Thought I’d missed something, and I’ve been here since 92.

Heroin in the 1990s. There were a couple of waves of overdose deaths in Plano high schools, and it made national news.
But Plano is generally one of the safest towns in the country.
Vaalarah@reddit
I was there haha, they put the campus in a "soft" lock down and I could see everything from my classroom's giant 2nd story floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the science building.
...high school was 10 years ago.
Also, the year before I started at Plano West there was a student in the year ahead of me who was murdered by his older brother. The brother killed him and their mom, and then himself after calling 911. Mom was a news anchor.
I think that's about it honestly. There was that one time Collin College's Plano campus got swatted, but several other colleges in the DFW area were also targeted during that and largely nothing happened beyond an officer unintentionally firing their weapon in the building.

As others mentioned, heroin problems in the 90s.
I wouldn’t say “worst event” because I think this is funny, but someone in the class of 2007 spray painted a giant dick on one of the tops of Plano Senior High School. I was class of ‘09, and I don’t think we had anything nearly as funny. Not that I can remember anyway.

Plano had a really big drug problem back in the day. Hardcore drugs like cocaine and heroin. But other than that, nothing comes to mind.
FluidFisherman6843@reddit
I still remember watching the local news one night and they were spinning the Plano heroin ods as "tragic" and then the next story they cut to was framing some kids in oak cliff getting arrested for drugs as Justice being served

That's super reassuring to hear. I grew up in northshore suburbs in Chicago and the worst thing was like drugs, high school parties, dui's, ect. Very rarely did murders or homicides occur.
BigMrAC@reddit
North shore, funny you mention, there were two big events that happened in that area from my day, a murder for hire in the 90’s and the powder puff football hazing at the Glenbrooks.

I remember when someone graffitied at GBS 4/20 and somehow the school administration thought that meant Hitler’s birthday and a school shooting would happen on 4/20. That day, they had multiple police at every entrance and maybe even a swat truck. Pretty sure the 4/20 was because the kid was a pothead, but who knows. No shooting happened that day though.
Toothpikz@reddit
I grad in the early 2000’s so this is going back. But we had a massive problem with over doses and then this kid took his life at the school and the entire world media fell onto the school. Was annoying trying to leave school with all the reports and everything around.

Depends on which side of Plano you are in. North lots of Asian/ Indian people. School are very competitive. Pretty safe place i would say. Can't go wrong.

Kid at Plano West almost a decade ago was planning to shoot up stone briar mall.
He thought he was contacting isis but it was the FBI. There was a sting while he was in science class.

Glad FBI stopped him!

I know when I went to Plano senior about 10 years ago they had a problem with gangs witch lead to a big fight on homecoming, but that’s it.

Asian gangs selling drugs thru Clark was a thing back in the day.
AssignmentSecret@reddit (OP)
interesting.. what were gang names do you know? what kinda drugs? are they not around anymore? thanks

There were a few brawls at whataburger between east and west. I haven’t heard of those in years

The 90s highschool scene was pretty wild. Don’t know about it being a topic of debate. I remember us elementary school kids talking about it. Plano likes to sweep things under the rug pretty quickly. That was then though…
