Looking for eBike Recommendation for NYC
Posted by ALargeSalad@reddit | ebikes | View on Reddit | 5 comments
I've been ebiking for a few years with Citibike and am thinking of buying one for longer rides (5-6 hour) to places without docks (Eastern Queens/Brooklyn), and for commuting.
Any recommendations? Ideally looking for something under 2k but would go up to 3k if it were truly worth it.
Nice to haves:
- Class 1 is enough
- 60+ mile range on 1 charge
- Lightweight
- Sturdy frame/tires for rough streets
- Easy maintenance in NYC area

60 miles is non standard with one battery. Ok you did say class 1 so if that means you might be into pedaling, in which case 60 miles is met by bikes with batteries in the larger sizes like 15Ah or more. It really does depend on pedaling. If you just want to go sport assist all the time, it will require a second battery.
A second battery in the back pack isnt really that terrible...
I presume you want a real bike, not a dumb moped style thing, since you said you want class 1..
I dont know if this is in your price range, but check out the priority current.
Also check upway.co for semi-regulated used ebike sales

Yeah - not afraid of pedaling on flat roads.
Extra battery in the backpack is a great idea, that opens up a ton of options!

If you're riding in NYC, the absolute biggest factor on your list is that last point: maintenance. Because of the strict new lithium battery fire laws, 90% of local NYC bike shops will straight up refuse to even fix a flat tire on your bike if it's some random online brand. You absolutely must buy a fully UL-certified bike from a reputable brand that local shops will actually trust and work on. Since you want something incredibly lightweight with solid range, the Tenways CGO600 Pro and the Velotric T1 are basically your holy grail bikes. Both weigh under 40 lbs so you can actually carry them up apartment stairs, both look exactly like stealthy regular pedal bikes to avoid theft, and they sit well under your $2k budget. The Tenways is particularly amazing for NYC commuting because it uses a carbon belt drive instead of a greasy metal chain, which means virtually zero drivetrain maintenance and no chain grease getting on your pants. Here is a list of lightweight, stealthy commuter e-bikes for you to compare side by side
