I currently live in VA where next month assault rifles are to be banned from purchasing. I am 21 and live in an apartment for now but wanted to go ahead and buy my first AR while I can, but on my drivers license it’s my previous address and not my current one(my apartment) can I still put my drivers license address down as my current one? What are the odds of me failing the background check or even legal/police trouble?

I don’t know how long VA gives you these days to change your drivers license address. It’s 30-60 days in other states. If you “just moved” you’d probably be OK using the “old” address. I used a lease once in VA to prove a current address but it was a private sale, not at a store so no 4473. Private sales still an option until July 1?

I assume so, I’ve called a couple stores today about the Situation and they haven’t mentioned a private sale as an alternative, just that they would be unable to do the sale if my addresses don’t match, and a utility bill would not work, had to be a state issued ID and all I have is drivers license, I could get it changed but it would take 30ish days etc

So what is a private sale and how does it work ? I buy from just another regular person who is selling a firearm?

Yes. Many(ish) sites online can allow for two people to meet and buy a firearm. I’m not sure if they can be listed here, but a quick google search should bring them up!

If you don’t want to wait to change the address you can “lose” your license and get a replacement with the new address at the DMV.

In every instance I’ve bought a gun, they have always needed to match, so that may present a problem. You can always join a forum like VAGun Trader and try to find something you can buy via private sale from another local

Update your address https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/online-services/address-change
request a replacement license: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/license/replace
Come back to reddit to complain you have to wait on the new license.

Depends on the place, but you might be ok with a car registration or water bill. Check ahead of time with the place.
