Replacing my 11 year old PC
Posted by LemonDesmond@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 5 comments
I built a low-midrange gaming my first PC 11 years ago with only upgrades to storage, RAM and GPU since. It's not compatible with Windows 11 and I'm not interested in alternative OS's, so it's time for a full upgrade. The only parts I will be salvaging from the old machine will be the GPU and a HDD.
I'm after an everyday PC which will hopfully last another 10 years. I don't game so much any more but would still like to be able to run new releases, even if at lower settings. Physically after something a bit smaller and a bit quieter than my current full tower, but that shouldn't be difficult.
I've had a play around and think this would be reasonable, but honestly I've no idea what anything means any more as it's been so long since I've dabbled in PC building. Any thoughts welcome!

I did the same, and the biggest mistake I made back in 2015 was getting the GTX 960 2 GB version instead of forking out the extra cash for the 4 GB one.
Never make the mistake of getting the card with lower VRAM. For a computer that's supposed to last 10 more years, get something with 16 GB VRAM. You can likely sell that 3060Ti for a good amount as they are way overpriced. 😄

That’s a super solid build, but a few prices look kinda wild for 2024 UK.
Big ones: that RAM and SSD are way overpriced. You can get 32 GB DDR5 6000 CL30 or CL32 for like £80 to £110, and a good 2 TB Gen 4 NVMe (SN770, MP44, KC3000, etc) for ~£100. Also no need to buy that 2 TB Barracuda if you are already salvaging a HDD.
7700X is fine, but if you spot a 7800X3D on sale it is way better for gaming longevity. Otherwise I would just clean up those storage and RAM choices and you are golden.

No, you can't. Have you looked at prices recently? RAM and SSD prices have risen 3-4x in the past 9 months.
pragomatic@reddit
If you want it to last that long, don't buy an 8GB video card today. There are already a lot of AAA games that tank without more VRAM.

OP is reusing their old GPU.
