How do I Gain my national insurance number?

I’m currently 15 but son to be 16, many of my friends already have theirs and say that it comes in the post, however they received it much earlier than the age I am at now. So how do I get my national insurance number, because I hope to apply for a job this summer.

Can you not get the HMRC app and see it there before it arrives in the post

Do they still issue the card? Its been so long since i got mine
CrazyCake69@reddit
Nope just a letter. They stopped doing card along time ago.

Well it can't possibly be a long time ago. I got one when I was 16 and I am only 45 now, so that is just a few years.

They don’t give out the cards with your NI number on it anymore. They just send a letter with it on instead.

Damn, aging myself a bit here then 😅😅
ASGT908@reddit
You just get a letter with the number on it these days.

Why are you so excited to get a national insurance number? 😂

As long as you’re parent has claimed child Benifit for you, you will be sent your national insurance number 3 months before you turn 16, if the parent has never claimed child Benifit then you need to apply online.

Don't worry you will get it soon enough so they can start taxing every penny you earn and spend.

My eldest daughter’s didn’t arrive, she just got in touch to request one, she called the Hmrc national insurance number helpline and they sent her a letter with it on.

Weirdly ask family. My grandma managed to legally change my address to her address at some point, presumably by opening me a savings account. And we found out when we were wondering where my NI number was and turns out it was sent to her. No idea how she did it. Had to call the government for hours to try and get the address removed from my records but they claim it wasn’t possible and I must have lived with my grandma. Anyway I guess legally I lived with my grandma for like five years. Extremely unlikely but it happened to me 🤷🏼♀️

I had to register for mine along with my brother. Was to do with my parents not claiming child support or something.
Proudlove1991@reddit
It will come. I think mine came when I was 15-17 years old
OddSign2828@reddit
You can still work without an NI number as long as you have proof of right to work, just tell them you’re waiting for it to arrive.
It typically arrives 3 months before your 16th birthday
BasildonBond-Now56@reddit
It normally comes 4-6 weeks before your 16th birthday.
