Is it ok for 11 year old UK kid to watch film 'The Wicker Man?

So I was at Alton Towers with my 11 year old son. We were queuing to get on the ride called 'The wicker man' which has the gimmick of giving you a 3d effect monologue from Scotty McHaggis about being a human sacrifice to the flames etc... Anyway the queue was brutal like 90 mins or so. During this time I told him it was based on a film... Naturally he asked me for a plot synopsis (I've only seen nick cage version), which I gave. Now he won't shut up about it lol and is pestering me to watch it. So per title is it ok for 11 year old UK kid to watch it? Pretty sure I had watched RoboCop, aliens, predator, nightmare on elm street by the time I was 11 so shouldn't be too bad right? What do you reckon? Would you let your 11 year old watch the wicker man?
Smoothoffaleater@reddit
The original, 100% great movie. Nick Cage one is criminally bad.
IJBLondon@reddit
Don't let him watch the Nicholas Cage version but only because its crap.
ReputationApart5983@reddit
Are you joking, I saw the old version on BBC4 a while back and it was ever worse. Fun fact though the girl who is missing and he finds her at the end, she went on to play Rosie Miller in Eastenders.

As long as its not the Nic Cage version.

humblepaul@reddit
It's rated 15 for a reason. If you expose your child to one 15 rated film, you've opened the door to them seeing any 15 rated film. I worked for 20years in broadcast compliance, working to the itc and then OfCom guidelines. Loads of research is carried out to find the right balance.
Saying that, I was 11 or 12 and friends invited me to watch a film that turned out to be American Werewolf in London, a film that won an Oscar for special fx. I didn't sleep for months and slept with a light on for years.
Walkerno5@reddit

I watched it for the first time just recently, as a fully grown adult, and it freaked me the fuck out. I absolutely hated it.
So no, I wouldn't recommend it. That's just me though, maybe he'd like it.
stephani29@reddit
I decided it was a good time to watch it for the first time when I was on holiday in a tiny village in the Highlands, I was very creeped out 😂
FuzzyBreak5678@reddit
Many years ago, I went to one of the Outer Hebrides on a camping holiday. One night we couldnt be bothered to put the tent up and just slept on the beach. I started to think about the Wicker Man. I really didn't get much sleep that night.
TankFoster@reddit
No wonder, bloody hell! I'd have been on edge the whole rest of the holiday!

Any_Marsupial836@reddit
To my 12 year old mind, watching it on the bbc late night, this was the only good bit. But it was so off kilter / amateur dramatics in styling that even back then I thought it was a bit shit. Felt like she was being directed by a member of local government that once smelled weed in passing and thought he knew about counter culture. I was both horny and confused, which pretty much sums up my whole life tbh.
orangeytrees@reddit
Phew. I thought it was just me. I could never get past the amateurishness and the dancing seni-naked girl.
Any_Marsupial836@reddit
Yeh, just very odd. The only thing that beats it is ‘Girl on a Motorcycle’. My mate said it was great.
Turns out it was just Marriane Faithful in biker leathers, and the ‘good bit’ was when she puts the fuel nozzle into the bike’s fuel tank. 🤦

If you don’t want to go by the ratings and can’t be bothered to watch it yourself first, then find the Common Sense Media website.
beant64@reddit
Wasn’t 11, but I watched it at 14 and it changed my trajectory of interest in music and literature etc. I’d say give it a watch first and see if you think it’d be appropriate for what he’s like.
DameKumquat@reddit
l'd leave it to 13 or 14 at the earliest - the images on the screen aren't so much of a problem, but the psychological manipulation is. Let them watch more complex plots first.
(my kid has been wanting to watch horror and all sorts since 11. My line was ask, and if it's a 15 I may well say yes, some I might want to watch with you, 18 probably not until you're older. And no you can't watch Squid Game. At 14 the kid is occasionally sneaking off to watch unsuitable films but generally asks my opinion first. So I can point out that Humbert in Lolita is a disingenuous narrator, etc.
ThatFilthyMonkey@reddit
It’s a rite of passage to watch something possibly a little too young, you might get some nightmares, some confusion or them thinking about things they’ve never considered before, but I think it’s a good thing overall.
Watch it with them, have a little discussion about it after, what bits were the scariest, the themes, what he did/didn’t like. Heck make it a monthly film night where he gets to watch something more mature but in a space where you can explore and discuss it.
Just acknowledge beforehand that the nudity will be awkward for you both and it’s gonna feel weird and embarrassing.
For the people saying about sex and nudity, at 12 they’re sadly likely to have already begun to be exposed to porn from classmates unfortunately.
outlawsmokeyscottish@reddit
Of course.
Mother-Market-4056@reddit
No. It an 18 in the early 90s and downgraded to a 15 in the early 2000s. Not only does it have nudey ladies dancing about but sex plays a big part of it, both in terms of the lead character's chastity and the islanders very contrasting views. So have fun explaining that one.
Also, it's a very weird film (albeit in a good way), so even if you're fine watching Britt Ekland prancing about with nowt on with an 11 year old (I'm not), you're more than likely doing to both have to explain what is going on and complaints of nightmares.
In short, watch Hellraiser instead.
Fioreborn@reddit
If you're going to show it to him at least show him the original and not that trash remake.
jdsuperman@reddit
If only there were some kind of film certification system which would allow people to work out whether or not they were old enough to watch a given title. Maybe I'll pitch it to the BBFC - it might just catch on.
Full_Employee6731@reddit
They used to give 15 to films that would be PG at most now.
To be honest I think the nudity is what might keep the Wicker man at a 15 rating. I'm sure some 11 year olds would be fine while others wouldn't.
WorcsBloke@reddit
It was an 18 when first released on video in 1990. Bumped down to 15 in 2002.
Full_Employee6731@reddit
Tbh I did feel it was strangely accurate.
A fish called wanda and the terminator are 15s and I'd let an 11 year old watch those.
WorcsBloke@reddit
I do get the impression that these days 15 is pretty much the go-to rating for the BBFC thinking "Film aimed at adults, but not full of explicit violence or sex". I watched Made in Dagenham the other week, and honestly if that didn't have "fuck" in the script I'd be surprised at the rating. For the most part it could be a 12 or even a strong PG.
escapingfromelba@reddit
Oddly enough some go the opposite due to things like smoking. I thini the Goonies got that treatment.
RodMunch85@reddit
Yes, agreed
It is not so crazy to ask peoples opinion and not just go off the antiquated rating system
RugbyValkyrie@reddit
Not that antiquated. Last update was 2023.
Brickie78@reddit
Or - and here's another radical thought - OP could watch it themselves and see what they think, given they know the kid in question.
MoreFly4620@reddit
well tbh asking on reddit saves him a lot of time over that idea, so yeh, actual a radical if not backwards thought

speckledchickhen@reddit
He’s too young to rationalise all the different adult themes that come up in the film. He does not (I hope) have a conception of the many 18+ topics that come up.
You’re assigning yourself six months of nightmares/ explaining to him over and over again the whys and the what’s / explaining to his teachers why his asking (or telling his friends) about so many dark and adult topics that he has no business knowing at 11 years old.
It’s wild that you’re even asking.
cjalderman@reddit
I feel like this is massively underestimating a lot of 11 year olds. If they were 6 or 7 it would be a different case
No_Ring_3348@reddit
I a was precocious little shit at 11 and I dunno if I'd have picked up on the very of-its-time moral of the story: >!collectivism is bad!<
The_Blip@reddit
I think I would have got it as a child, but I would be very smug about it and then show my friends all the creepy scenes.
Icantdoitidk@reddit
I watched it at that age and could rationalise absolutley everything in it fine. It's not Nil by Mouth, it's a film that raises interesting moral questions that 11 year olds should be starting to think about any way. There's absolutley nothing in it that 11 year olds aren't already aware of.
azzthom@reddit
The Nicholas Cage version is garbage. Don't bother.
The original film is superb. However, it contains female nudity and is rather disturbing. The main character is being psychologically manipulated and <!so is the audience!>.
The_Blip@reddit
The way you worded that made me read it as if you found female nudity to be disturbing, lol. Took my brain half a second to catch up to what you meant.
V65Pilot@reddit
I remember watching it at the theatre. I was 8. It was 1973.
CrazeeLilDevil@reddit
Awwwh I was a similar age when I terrified myself for life with childs play 🤣 Not seen wicker man, but my 8yo is aware of IT, Jason, Freddie Fazbear, Freddie Kruger, Annabelle ect, she plays loads of creepy ass shit on roblox and has watched streamers play certain games, she herself has played some. Heck, my kiddo knows what the shining is and her dad visited that hotel irl, to a point I'm starting to believe kids come reconditioned
Then again, my girls morbid as fuck, we heard a lass screaming the other night, kid asks if someone's being killed 🤷🤣
ThrowMeInTheTrash314@reddit
Hmm I’d say no , not because it’s violent or anything the like the films you mentioned. But it has weird like sexual undertones through a lot of it and more psychological stuff that I would say 11 year olds aren’t supposed to process
Reesy@reddit
I watched the original for the frst time a few months ago and it actually bothered me a bit, I would say 11 is too young yes.
random_username_96@reddit
Personally I think the themes are too mature for an 11 year old. At the very least I would be VERY embarrassed to watch a film with my parents that had that much nudity! I wouldn't let a child watch Aliens or Nightmare on Elm Street either! They're all rated age 15 which I think is reasonable.
Grotbagsthewonderful@reddit
Not really, I'd leave it a few years the theme is pretty disturbing even for an adult, you don't want that sort of nonsense floating around in his head. Even if he does watch it I'll wager he'll probably get bored of the 1973 version anyway.
heroics-delta8s@reddit
You can explain what they want to do to the lovely landlord’s daughter.
Disastrous_Trade_724@reddit
Hum borderline, I think 12/13 would be more appropriate
CrispGunther@reddit
“I’ve only seen the nick cage version” made me weep. And not in a good way.
And no. The Wicker Man - the REAL version - is not ok for an 11-yo to watch ffs man
Icantdoitidk@reddit
I watched it at that age and was fine. It gave me a lifelong appreciation of neofolk music.
There's not really anything violent in and not really any "horror" in the sense you're thinking of. There's some nudity and discussion of sex but it's not "sexually explicit" necessarily. More just discussions of the acts themselves in relation to religion.
fwendy123@reddit
I think it depends a lot on the 11 year old. a lot would find it too scary, others would find it too boring
Suspicious_Neck_5156@reddit
The original version is absolutely fine to watch, it’s not particularly frightening, I’d say it’s the nudity some people might find more objectionable rather than the story.
winterknight1979@reddit
It's just a musical.
OkPerformance66@reddit

winterknight1979@reddit

sbaldrick33@reddit
It's not very violent, but there's a lot of nudity and sex isn't even subtext, it's just text. So if you think that's unsuitable for an 11 year old, then no.
temujin1976@reddit
The ride isn't based on the film, apart from perhaps the name. Stories bear no relation.

Own-Huckleberry-975@reddit

winthewarpie@reddit
It’s a great film and I’ve watched it many times but think the nudity and sexual content isn’t suitable for an 11 year old
Sufficient-Cold-9496@reddit
The ride is not relay based on the film, more like the film and the ride story have the same source, an ancient tradition of burning sacrifices in a wicker man, or other wicker shaped object
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicker_man
Send him down a rabbit hole of old world pagan tradions, from up hell-ya in the shetlands, to Wasialing ( of an appl tree) to the Tar barrel running on Otter St Mary, Padstow 'Obby 'oss and more
Ravenser_Odd@reddit
I don't recall there being a Scotty Mc-fuckin-Haggis, so I would say it's not closely based on the film at all.
Sufficient-Cold-9496@reddit
The only link is the burning of a sacrifice in a man made from wicker, and sacrifice could be anything that could hold a value, either sentimental, valuable or an animal, some historians believe that the burning of people in a wicker effigy was nothing more than Roman propaganda to make the native Brittish seem like a bunch of savages.
That is the same source point that the wicker man ride uses as its story, and the film also used as its starting point
jizzyjugsjohnson@reddit
The Eewar Woowar film is a classic but I’m not sure showing a young boy a film about the ritualistic pagan sacrifice of virgin men would be great for his teenage mind
TraditionalLog9445@reddit
Sounds like you had the same upbringing as me wrt 80s ultra violent films and I also have kids of the same age as you.
We've watched Predator, T2 and T1. I only had to fast forward the 'innapropriate' scene in T1.
Tried Aliens but it was too scary.
However, the OG wicker man is different.
It's got a few sex scenes in which I wouldn't let my 11 YO watch and it's very suggestive and more of a psychological thriller.
My concern is nightmares and inappropriate content wrt this subject.
Everyone is different but I view sex scenes, sexual content and lot's of bad language as inappropriate.
I wouldn't let my kids watch the wicker man.
It's been many years since I've seen it though. Maybe watch it first and make a note of any scenes that are inappropriate.
FletchLives99@reddit
Totally. I once watched The Descent with my then 11 yr old. And some of the Godfather with my then 4 yr old (gave up, too many questions).
_Taggerung_@reddit
Grief the descent traumatised me enough at 20 never mind 11!
FletchLives99@reddit
I love the bleakness. And I love Neil Marshall's explanation that the US ending where escapes from the cave isn't the "happy" ending. This, from Empire magazine:
If you saw The Descent in the UK you’ll know it ends – SPOILER ALERT! – with Shauna Macdonald’s grieving Sarah seemingly escaping the cave system, only for it to be revealed that she’s hallucinating, still trapped in the depths, envisioning her lost daughter as the cave’s creatures skitter in the darkness. In the US ending, Sarah actually did escape – which allowed for the production of The Descent Part 2, on which Marshall was only a producer. “It was always argued that the alternative ending was the happy ending. To my mind, there’s no happiness for Sarah outside that cave,” Marshall tells Empire. “Her family’s dead, her friends are gone, she’s completely insane. The best version of it to me was Sarah being, in her head anyway, back with her daughter. So that’s the only ending there is, as far as I’m concerned.”
kh_ram@reddit
Did you tell your 4 year old to suck a lemon?
antlered-god@reddit
The Nicholas Cage remake is an insult to the original. NOBODY should see that.... The original 1973 version is absolutely classic, but I'd say 11 is a bit young
yearsofpractice@reddit
Hey OP. I’ve got two kids under 12 that constantly pester me to watch age inappropriate stuff. They think that horror films are just about violence and jump scares. I’ve explained to them that there are some horror films that show humans in genuine pain and distress which is really upsetting and difficult for a child to understand and process.
To be completely clear - The Wicker Man starts off twee but descends into the most distressing and horrifying situation that would could realistically befall a person. It’s really hard for some people to watch.
I love it though. One of my favourite films.
Nice_Step6157@reddit
I would ask reddit 1st and then go with the most popular answer. .
Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
Every child is different - some would be genuinely traumatised by it, some would be fine.
Around 10-11 was when I started getting into 'proper' horror films as that's when everyone with older brothers was already in high school and watching them, so the younger brothers in my year group would spread the word...
I can vaguely remember watching what I now know to have been Nightmare on Elm Street with my dad when I was like 5 or 6 🤨 the only reason I know this is because I remember the 'bad guy's wearing a striped jumper, a hat that looked like a lampshade, and having a face that looked like melted cheese.
By 10/11 I'd watched Scream (with my babysitter), Candyman and It (with friends at sleepovers) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Exorcist (alone 😬)
babydekuscrub@reddit
I actually watched it with my 11 (almost 12) year old quite recently. He'd been asking for a while because I often play the soundtrack. We talked a lot about why it was not a film for kids beforehand (I explained there was sex/nudity as well as horror) so nothing was a surprise, we watched it together and laughed at all the funny parts, answered any questions along the way. And he is generally not a sensitive or easily spooked kid so I had no concerns about it being too scary. He asked to watch Midsommar next and that was an absolutely fucking not until he's 16+.
Anyway short answer - you know your kid, but best to watch it together if you do.
HeartyBeast@reddit

NikkerFebu25@reddit
It's a musical in which two different worlds colide.
On the one side the ritualsitic hedonistic pagans that give in to their passions and on the other side the strict firm religious Christian cop who masters his desires.
The colour themes of blood and white represent blood from birth, sperm and milk.
I doubt an eleven year will enjoy it.
Have tou guys seen teh exorcist?
cjalderman@reddit
I don't think it's too bad. The worst offenders are probably the nude dancing scene and the ending. If you think he's mature enough to enjoy it then go ahead
shamone_mofo@reddit
I was brought up on Nightmare on Elm st ,Robocop and Terminator . Let it happen .
Circle-of-friends@reddit
Robocop and Terminator at least are pretty cartoonish violence and fantastical, they're sci-fi and although gritty, they're obviously fantasy. The Wicker Man is not, it feels like it could happen in any sleepy village. It is not appropriate for an 11 year old.
gem368@reddit
Same like 6 years old I saw robocop 🙈 I also saw jaws though and have a ridiculous fear of the ocean… like more than what’s normal
Lily346@reddit
No. He’s too young.
GlitteringBryony@reddit
I feel like a lot of the really terrifying bits of the original are probably going to be more terrifying to an adult, than to a child, because to a child pretty much everyone around you is always moving in mysterious ways and only half-answering your questions, so it probably just feels normal.
But, there is also tonnes of weird sexual themes (and especially, unhealthy, coercive sexual themes!), and misogyny that I want to call "period typical" so might really shock a youngster, and the ending is really, really disturbing.
Maybe just let him listen to the (excellent) soundtrack for now?
oportoman@reddit
No is it fuck appropriate
Difficult_System1264@reddit
I haven't seen the Nicolas Cage version because it got such terrible reviews but the original is deeply disturbing.
It's impossible for a bunch of internet strangers to say whether your 11 year old would be ok with it but in general, no, I wouldn't be happy with an 11 year old watching a film that ends with a man being burned alive. It's not graphic or gory but, for anyone with an imagination, it's horrifying.
RochesterThe2nd@reddit
Only if he wants his sexuality awoken by That Dance.
Capable_Anything6532@reddit
The Nicolas Cage one is atrocious — the original one is the best, but neither is appropriate for an 11 year old — not even with parental supervision.
AEHBlandalorian@reddit

Potential-Wheel-5899@reddit

revengepunk@reddit
i think if you watch it with him, yeah, it's fine. the most provocative things are the amount of nudity and sexuality tbh, the rest of the horror is stuff an 11 year old can handle imo. if you're comfortable with him seeing the nudity and how provocative the women are (my parents would've been fine watching it with me at that age personally), then it should be good.
revengepunk@reddit
i'm talking about the original btw, i won't touch the nic cage version with a ten foot pole LOL

Absolutely no way. There’s some really wierd sex stuff going on it. Multiple couples shagging on gravestones and britt ekland doing a weird nekkid writhing dance thing which seems to go on forever (which I’m sure an 11 year old boy might like but doesn’t mean it’s appropriate).
Kinbear@reddit
Show him the original, and he'll probably lose interest after about half an hour.
as I remember it was quite a slow film. 😉
johnnyjonnyjonjon@reddit
The ride isn't based on the film, it's just based on the same kind of pagan ritual. The back story firmly sets it in the woods around the actual park rather than a Scottish island, for example.

TepacheLoco@reddit
The content is not too out there by modern standards (would skip the director's/extended cuts they have more explicit scenes) but in general the vibes of it are not really kid friendly, it'll likely be either boring or nightmare inducing
bloodandglory31@reddit
IMDb has a section that covers the violence/scary/nudity scenes in films. Have a look there and see if what it mentions would be suitable.
WinkyNurdo@reddit
The original is up there on my most nightmarish films list, at the top with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I wouldn’t show it to a kid under the age of 16 I suppose. There’s something deeply distressing about it; there’s no free will, no wrong or right, no morality. Once dear old Edward steps on that boat, he’s doomed. It’s fascinating and horrifying, and the denouement is terrifying.
koombot@reddit
Back when I were a lad my folks would watch the film first, then wed be allowed to watch it with them and get sent out of the room for any bits that were too much.
Also, they had terminator and alien toys for kids back then so...
holdingtea@reddit
I've only seen the original and quite recently. It has some very vanilla nude scenes, but like you i had already watched stuff much darker, violent and explicit when I was 11.
but it does vary - back in school in the late90/early00s some kids were more sheltered than others, but it did usually feel like they were outliers.

THE BEES OH GOD THEY’RE IN MY MOUTH
Top tier Nic Cage tbh even if the film isn’t great
Annabelle_Sugarsweet@reddit
I watched it then also the film eraserhead, stolen vhs tapes I watched from step dads cabinet, yes it has disturbed me for the rest of my life, but did set me on a trajectory of weird things which was cool, but yes also gave me many nightmares. I would say no, not appropriate.
armthesquids@reddit
Haha I watched the exact same double showing when I was ten at a sleepover, they were both showing on channel 4. Definitely messed with my head, in some ways good and in others not so
b3ta_blocker@reddit
Is it a good ride?
potatosample@reddit
We used to get our old siblings to go to Blockbuster and hire The Ring, The Grudge, Saw etc. at that age. Were we terrified? Yes! But I think at that age they can distinguish between reality and fiction.
Tall-Marsupial-5368@reddit
If you have to ask, the answers no. 11 year olds aren't 5.
Sea_Director_4439@reddit
My Daughter watched it when she was 11. She was quietly impressed by the ending but baffled for the most part. The directors cut is a little bit saucy BTW.
Sea_Director_4439@reddit
Oh, you said the Nic Cage version. No, I wouldn't recommend that to anybody.
Spottyjamie@reddit
Not at 11 no sorry
Let kids be kids
VRS38@reddit
Depending on your sons maturity I'd say. I have an 11 yo, and i check here > https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450345/parentalguide/
It would be a yes from me. I mainly check sex and nudity and profanity. Too much is a no from me.
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
Depends if it's the original or the Nick Cage one. If it's the latter then no, as it's awful
Own-Try1886@reddit
I think the scary parts are okay for an 11 year old who's into that kind of thing. But there's quite a lot of weird nakedness and boobery as I remember.
Deep_Banana_6521@reddit
yes. If you've watched the film and dont mind it. why not?
My dad only banned films like Clockwork Orange when I was a kid because of the sexy bits, but movies like Exorcist he never minded.
norvalito@reddit
I wouldn’t, to be honest. It’s a great film but it’s a proper psychological horror story with a lot going on, and it is pretty disturbing in parts. Personally I think 11 is too young.
You could show him the Radiohead video for Burn the Witch, which is basically a cartoon précis of it.
ttrsphil@reddit
Yeah if he’s fairly mature.
You would have had enough time to watch it while wiring for the ride… 😭
Demonthief27@reddit
What do you do in a queue
Automatic_Survey_307@reddit
I'd say no save it until you're a few years older
ThickTadpole3742@reddit
I'd say no but that's just me
