So... do I buy a 5800X3D?

I built my AM4 system in 2019. The current specs:
- CPU: R7 3700X
- GPU: RX 5700XT 8GB (similar to 2070 super)
- RAM: 16GB 3600mhz CL18
- Mobo: ASUS Prime X470-Pro (a solid X470 board, but limited to PCIE 3.0)
- PSU: Corsair RM750X
- SSDs: two Samsung drives
I have gotten 7 great years out of this system and I am hoping to get at least that many more. I want to get a 5800X3D so I can upgrade to a 9700XT or similar GPU in the future without any bottlenecks. The 5800X3D is still expensive however, and I'm a bit concerned about the PCIE limitation on the motherboard. Is this a good idea or will I regret it a few years down the line?

I have a 5600g with a 5070ti and am also thinking about the 5800x3d but will probably cost around $500aud in Australia, Im probably better off waiting for second gen a 6, there's plenty of great games to still play, and for future newer titles if performance becomes an issue I can hopefully just adjust settings for smoother performance
Lancer07R@reddit
I managed to grab a brand-new 5800X3D a while back for around $250 and upgraded from a Ryzen 3600 (paired with an RTX 4080, by the way).
The performance improvement was huge, and I haven't regretted it for a second. At current prices, I have absolutely no interest in moving to AM5.
RandomisedThoraway@reddit
Have the 5800x3d and 9070xt on gen 3 pcie and it performs fantastically.
Naerven@reddit
It depends. Personally I say no. This is partially because I live near enough a Microcenter which has a 7600X3D combo for the MSRP of the 5800X3D re-release that would be better for gaming and productivity.
mooseknunckle@reddit
Holy shit I can upgrade my 5600x, I did not know AMD was doing a re-release
Naerven@reddit
Officially the launch price is $349. Hopefully the scalpers won't just snage them all.
jackofallcards@reddit
To get 32GB of RAM with that bundle it’s more like $600.
If you’re only running 16 as-is sure I guess
Naerven@reddit
For gaming I could do it for a couple of years if I really needed to. Otherwise the $500 R7-7700 bundle has 32gbs and is on par for gaming performance or just go with the 7800X3D bundle. I would still rather go up than stay on AM5 even with a new CPU.
IGunClover@reddit
Yes.
The_Machine80@reddit
I wouldnt pay 350 for a 5800x3d. 300 maybe but not 350. If I were you and your only gaming id get a 5500x3d off Aliexpress for 180. Just ordered one for a upgrade on a friend's pc last night.
mooseknunckle@reddit
Which vendor did you use?
Dennygreen@reddit
I did that last month and it's been great.
coming from an r5 3600
forevertired1982@reddit
Tge 5800x3d is literally being re released for around $300 so waiting for that would make sense,
And that will easily keep an am4 system relevant for a bit longer,
I have a 5800x 32gb ddr4 3600mts and a 9070xt playing art 4k with only a few more intensive games require FSR4 quality which is indistinguishable from native unless zoomed in 4x slowed down 50% speed and pixel peeping,
Even FSR4 balanced looks good enough if you really need more fps.
I was considering an am5 upgrade until a year of terrible ram prices I bit the bullet and nought a 9070xt to replace my 6900xt and am very satisfied with the performance.
MonkeySkulls@reddit
pricing for the US was announced yesterday, about $350.
mooseknunckle@reddit
I’ll take that and keep my 3080 rolling as well
Acoma1977@reddit
I won't pay that type of money for the 5800x3d. Bought my current 5800x for $180 3 years ago
RickyAA@reddit
To all the retards in the comment section, I also had a 3700X and moved to the 5700X3D and it was definitely worth the jump, also had the 3070 (equivalent to a 2080) and jumped to the 5080 and damn it can run anything at 4K 60 FPS. Why I choose to stay for AM4 is because why not invest into this platform and the minimal performance from upgrading to AM5 from top tier AM4 is not worth the jump especially having to buy DDR5 and I am not gonna replace my 128GB anytime soon.
down_init@reddit
Over time I've upgraded from a 5600x and 6700xt to a 5700x3d and 9070xt on the same board. It's been a blast. I currently have no reason to upgrade to am5. Nor would I pay these prices.
SwitchDear8969@reddit
Was the upgrade worth it? I built my system in 2023 and have a 5700X+6700XT and thinking to buy a 5800X3D and 9060XT so how much of a performance gain am I looking at?
Borgie311@reddit
I went from a 3600x to 5700x3d and then my 5700xt to a 9060xt 16gb. And its been great. I think I am save up get a 9070xt. Using a 3440x1440 144 hz monitor now it holds up well but I do have to run alot of things on med to high settings.
down_init@reddit
Noticeable in game without a doubt. The first big change was the cpu, on the 6700xt it was ok. Then I jumped to a 6900xt then 9070xt. I went back and built another system with the 5600x and the 6900xt and I could really see how much that cpu would've held that gpu back. I'd recommend it personally.
Suitable_Tadpole4870@reddit
Pondering a similar transition, though I don’t have the x3D. Just the normal 5700X.
reddit_equals_censor@reddit
+am5 is a shit platform vs am4 as well. ecc on am5 is a dumpster fire, sataports on average got like what cut on half? hell even 5 audio jacks replaced with just 2, because screw all people using 5.1 audio.
and all for 50% higher prices vs am4 😃
my plan and i guess yours as well is to stick with am4 until am6 comes out with proper performance jumps after the bubble and hopefully a less shit platform 😄
nerdydodger@reddit
PCIe 3.0 is not a problem with any cards that use the full 16 lanes. We aren’t saturating it with gpus consistently.
With your rig, I’d look into upping to 32 gigs of ram and look for any x3d model you can get your hands on. That’ll keep you going for at least another gpu generation or two. It’s what I’m doing with a 5700x3d and now a 4080s (was a 3070 prior).
My 4080s is locked at PCIe 3.0 cause I have a riser cable that is finicky and I haven’t replaced it with a new one cause I haven’t found a reason to. My benchmarking and games align with others experience with higher PCIe speeds.
greentintedlenses@reddit
Idk why you'd suggest upgrading ram on AM4 if OP also needs to buy the x3d.
Woof. That's a lot of spending to stay on this old platform. That's like spending as much as going to am5 practically
nerdydodger@reddit
32 gigs of ram can be found online for $200ish new, or $150ish used.
An am4 x3d chip is also about 200 to 300 bucks depending on the model and vendor.
Meanwhile the 7600 (which is about 5800x3d) + mobo + ram will set you back around 700 to 800 bucks depending on model and vendor.
Is it ideal. No. Some folks can’t justify the 300 to 400 more to go AM5 at the moment. The above upgrades are drop in, step by step so they can be budgeted accordingly. The new computer needs to be all bought to be useful.
Suitable_Tadpole4870@reddit
My problem is I can justify it, but I really shouldn’t have to even be in that position imo and morally I’m finding it really hard to not break. Feels like I’m bending to their whim, sending the wrong signal as a consumer, and honestly I hate the AI bubble and its downstream effects.
Plus there’s a lot of trips I’m saving up for, so I just remind myself of that and feel better staying on AM4 until the next gen. This 5700X has been a damn warrior for me since I bought it so may as well ride it out like I did with my 2070
sammavet@reddit
*looks at RAM prices
Nice they've come down a bit. Still low expensive than AI boom, but I can deal with this.
Suitable_Tadpole4870@reddit
That’s kinda where I’m at but I as a consumer don’t want to signal I’m okay with these DDR5 prices. I might not even have any choice though, however :(
sammavet@reddit
I have a "3" series I'm hoping to run for 1 more year...
Caswagna93@reddit
Are you near a microcenter? They are having great combo deals on AM5 platforms. I have been holding off on jumping off my 5700X3D system but now that I read AM5 is extending into 2029, I am planning to transition by way of microcenter once Zen 6 chips release and I can flip my existing CPU, RAM & MoBo set up
DBA92@reddit
5800x3d is ridiculously overpriced. They’ve had the 7800x3d on Ali express recently for nearly half the price. (Sub £200). Sell what you have and go ddr5. You can easily get a set on eBay for a decent chunk off retail price. I’ve bought 4 x 32gb kits in the last month for flip builds.
greentintedlenses@reddit
You clearly didn't see the news about the 5800x3d re release.
Codys_friend@reddit
If it were me, I'd move to AM5. Get a combo deals from Microcenter or Newegg and get on AM5 so you can upgrade to Zen6 in a few years.
Hoping your AM4 rig will perform well for another 7 years seems to be a big ask. For about $300 more than the cost of just the 5800x3d, you can get a 7800x3d with 32gb of ram.and an x870 mobo. This is a solid foundation for many years to come.
Your pc has given you many years of faithful service. You got your monies worth out of it. Zen6 launches next year and the you'll be 2 generations behind on the cpu, as well as the other components on your pc: usb ports, pcie lanes. If you want a pc that will be relevant for another 7 years, move to AM5.
Takimaster@reddit
Im in a similar boat as you, seems like a great opportunity to move to am5 as well
MarkedByNyx@reddit
$350 is absolutely atrocious for a cpu as old as the 5800x3d in my honest opinion, atp id just rather go Intel with a 13700k which is better in every way.

bootz-pgh@reddit
3700x to 5800x3d does such a good job at smoothing 1% lows, even without a GPU change.
I got ripped off buying a 3700x with 3080 during COVID. Upgraded to a 5800x3d and 32GB of RAM and I don’t see myself upgrading the GPU for another 1-2 years. I’ll probably still have the AM4 CPU to 2030 and beyond.
I think I’ve enjoyed the x3d more than my i7700-k.
Professional_Rush788@reddit
The 5800x3d is being rereleased in July I think? For 349. I know it’s rereleasing soon. I would wait until you can get it new. If you can swing it like the other posters have said get 32gb and upgrade your cpu.
norm009@reddit
I would wait until the release date and see what the actual cost is.
RefrigeratedTP@reddit
I went from a 5900X to a 5800X3D and don’t regret it at all. Better gaming performance and cooler temps.
Not saying it’s the best use of my money… but I don’t regret it
bwal8@reddit
I did the same swap 5900x -> 5800x3d. Unfortunately I went from 1440p 16:9 to 1440p 32:9 at the same time, so it’s impossible for me to compare the 2 processors. I can say that the 5900x benchmarked higher on CPU tasks.
khironinja@reddit
I would say yes but damn $350 for it is crazy, if you are around a MicroCenter they have better deals for that price that would get you on AM5 and then I'm pretty sure Newegg does too.
EdErichZann@reddit
pcie won't be a problem. tough call, not sure... but if you get the 5800x3d and maybe a regular 9070 (non-XT) that would be quite a good combination. 16 gb ram is fine if you don't have too much other stuff running for some games.
