Should I do am4 or am5?

i recently found out that my dad edits his photos and does his work on my brothers 10 year old macbook so i want to make a nice mini itx system for him. i already have spare 64gb ddr4 (2666mhz) but havent built since 2021
curious to what the opinion towards am5 vs am4 rn like is it worth the big jump in price?

Specifically for photo editing look into the I7-12700 series of Intel CPUs. For the price it should outgun some of the AM5 CPUs for photo editing.

What apps, Lightroom? Get an am4 itx with an APU and call it a day.

yeah prettry much just lightroom, photoshop, and some office stuff. do you have any recommendations for good apus?

Probably a 5600G, the 5700G is more performant but honestly photo editing is pretty lightweight, the bottleneck for most people is usually the monitor they’re working on rather than the hardware.

Are you sure he's willing to give up the MacOS apps and routines he's used to? I'd perhaps consider a Mac Mini.

yk thats a good question but he did say hes considering a new system and is torn between the two but ill def consider that

as you already have the ram easy choice for am4 or intel 1700 with ddr4 board. if it's only office tasks and photo editing, no gaming, igpu would be enough, something like 5600g for am4 or i3-14100/i5-14400 for intel 1700.

How heavy of photo editing is he doing? It might be simpler and cheaper to get him a mini PC like this: https://www.amazon.com/Beelink-SER8-Computer-PCIe4-0-2600MHz/dp/B0F1D91CDR

definitely not anything too heavy since he moved on from professional work but the old laptop struggles a lot so its still something
aragorn18@reddit
I definitely recommend the mini PC. You said that he's looking for a small system and you can't get much smaller than that. Also, this way he has a warranty and a support number to call if something breaks.

with so much mem already hella cheaper just do am4, or 12/14 intel
