What’s goin on here? Fuel dump?

Just south of KFAT this F15 is flying in circle patterns for about 10min now. Sounds like their afterburners are on too.
agha0013@reddit
yup.
not sure about afterburners, you likely wouldn't have them going while dumping fuel unless you want to make a bit of a dramatic mess, and dump-and-burns are (i think) banned in the US.
TBCoR@reddit (OP)
I’m not an expert. But he was haulin ass on the straight aways.
MikhailCompo@reddit
Why do Americans feel the need to add the superfluous word 'aways' after the word 'straight'.
harambe_did911@reddit
"He was hauling ass on the straight" ?
Qzx1@reddit
Kinky
Illinikek@reddit
Straight is a descriptor and a direction. Straight away refers specifically to a straight portion of a track or route.
makatakz@reddit
Except it’s one word: “straightaway.” Your autocorrect might have done that to you.
TBCoR@reddit (OP)
It did it to me that ashore
crooks4hire@reddit
Got you again…that ass whore *
Steje8@reddit
The "benefit of doubt" was a nice read. Thanks
Illinikek@reddit
Mayhaps
KiwieeiwiK@reddit
Away is also a descriptor and a direction
Illinikek@reddit
Big if true
PartTime13adass@reddit
We use American slang just to piss off idiot limeys. Aussies and Kiwis do the same with their own slang.
LA_rent_Aficionado@reddit
Because a straight is a geographic feature that someone else would nitpick
KiwieeiwiK@reddit
That's a strait
Minuhmize@reddit
You people are exhausting.
Ok_Muffin_925@reddit
I think superfluous is superfluous.

But it should be 'straightaway.' Used as an adjective, straightaway means "straight forward, without turn or curve,"

Vapor de agua . Sois una panda de conspiran picos
777XSuperHornet@reddit
No - it was dumping fuel. That was confirmed.
Booleano101@reddit
Ya claro. Todo el mundo dice que las estelas son de vapor de agua ,pero ahora son fuel o aerosoles . Conspiranoicos
agha0013@reddit
vapor trails from wing tips aren't that solid or long lasting and typically don't come from the plane when it's flight straight and level.
engine vapor trails would come from the engines and not this low
that, as OP later confirmed, is fuel coming from the F-15's fuel dumping port on the tip of the right wing.

Why are dump and burns banned? I would think that the burned product is less environmentally damaging?
TreeFhiddy@reddit
cause its dangerous as shit lmao
yabucek@reddit
Genuinely asking, how? Is it possible for the flame front to catch up to the aircraft?
TreeFhiddy@reddit
Sorry if that came out wrong. Just meant it was purely for display purposes and caused undue risk to airframe and other aircraft basically so they got rid of it. Wasn't environmental concerns.

dc469@reddit
I'm not familiar with it, I'm guessing the flame can follow the path back to the fuel line and cause damage to the aircraft?

"hey how come we can't light the gas on fire as we spew it out of the multi million dollar aircraft?"
shortname_4481@reddit
What is the difference between that and the afterburner?
ukulele87@reddit
Its not, its exactly the same thing obviously.
shortname_4481@reddit
The only difference between it and afterburner is that the afterburner combusts fuel in the chamber.
ukulele87@reddit
Yeah basically nothing, its the same.
popups4life@reddit
Just go faster than the speed of fire and you'll be good!
UAintMyFriendPalooka@reddit
I mean…I don’t see why not. Go for it.
1776cookies@reddit
I bet you're fun.
Specialist_Reality96@reddit
If you have a big enough fuel leak from another part of the aircraft, fuel leaks on the F-111 were common. The flame would travel up the vapor trail and ignite the fuel tank in an explosive way. Take a wild stab in the dark how this was discovered.
F14Scott@reddit
In my jet, dumping in AB was prohibited by our operating procedures, probably for theoretical danger of a fire. It was the same for F/A-18s, at the time. However, I know of times it happened in both airframes that resulted in big streams of ignition with no resultant damage to the aircrafts.
SnooCupcakes1514@reddit
There are studies that suggest the exact opposite. At least that is what we, tanker pilots, say. I dumped millions of lbs of gas in my 14 years of flying tankers.
Strega007@reddit
I have tried to light the stream of fuel with burner in the Eagle numerous times and can't make it.
UnderstandingTime162@reddit
The operating unit needs to get the same allotment for fuel in FY2027 as in FY2026!
budoucnost@reddit
Why on one side? Do the not have two dumpers like commercial airliners?
UnderstandingTime162@reddit
Wrong answers. Early F-15s dumped from both sides. However, it introduced a latent failure mode with a failed open tank pressure regulator. An early F-15 burst its internal/integral fuel tanks because of it, and it was lucky to get back on the ground in one piece. Retrofits happened to the aircraft that were already built, and a design change happened for new-build aircraft.
Short answer, it’s so that that the tanks can still adequately “breathe”, including for failure cases, while dumping fuel.
danit0ba94@reddit
No real need to have two on a little eagle. (It's not that little but you know what I mean)
Not nearly as much fuel that has to be dumped as, say, a 787.
Velosprints@reddit
Landing gear must be fragile! Vipers have no dump.
Kardinal@reddit
F-15s are loud as hell, they don't need to be in burner for that. And you would probably be able to see the exhaust being red if they were burning too.
If they're having gear issues then yes, they have a reason to lighten the load as much as possible before attempting landing. Thus, fuel dump.
TBCoR@reddit (OP)
Yup. Just loud AF lol
Kardinal@reddit
Twin military jets are like that.
Loudest plane I've ever heard is still the Raptor. Dear god
Gillbilly69@reddit
F35B is a LOT louder than an F22
Adviderisj@reddit

I’ve heard them all. B-1 still holds the crown. Sounds like the sky is being split open.
Jpp9977@reddit
I live near Kingsley Field and we've had F-15s for years and now we are getting F35s. They are incredibly loud when oriented away from you, louder than the F15s.
lichesschessanalyst@reddit
I lived just off of Homedale for a while and loved that sound. I miss it.

Watched the airshow from a rooftop on Homedale! I worked on Washburn for a bit and got to see a lot of activity at the airfield. It really is cool to see regularly. I love it here.

I was about to say this! I live next to Langley so my kids are used to F-22 and F/A-18s when we go to Virginia Beach. But let an F-35 nearby and they are hollering for their earphones
Bearha1r@reddit
Just bought some decent cans for my kids. We're going to Cosford in a couple of weeks and they have an F35-B flying.

F-15C with landing gear issues dumping fuel before landing. This lowers weight to ease pressure off the landing gears, also reduces the risk of fire if it gets catastrophic.
