How do elderly live alone in the U.K. ? Don’t they get depressed?

Isn’t it scary to live and manage your life alone when your spouse passes away or kids stay far from you or just that you don’t have any friends or relatives if you haven’t married or had kids?
I come from India so while growing up we always had a sense of community and no lack of people. For anything you need you could call up someone or the other either from family or a maid servant and your neighbours are like an extended family so if your telly isn’t working or you need some groceries they are always there to lend a helping hand.
Since living in the U.K. for a couple of years, I have observed a stark difference in culture where people live in these big houses but neighbours don’t even know who lives next and everything is almost automated plus no one bumps into you on the street to ask about your life.
It’s fine if you are healthy and young or if you have family around but how do you function when you get old and have to do everything by yourself? Does it bother you or that’s just the way it is and you accept and get on with it ?
