Does everyone put their PC under your desk or am I crazy?

Watching tech youtube is inevitable to see them displaying their build on their desk next to their monitor like a work of art. I've considered doing the same to fit in with the community but it's just too impractical. I get that it looks nice in their youtube studio but does anyone actually do that in real life?
Am I crazy but don't normal ppl just put their PC under their desk / hide it away? Even if it is a new build with RGB, doesn't matter. I feel like it's just what we do.

Back in the day of disks and media, it made sense to have a true "Desktop" computer.
But now that we have digital media and USB, it's nowhere near my desktop.
guntanksinspace@reddit
So desktop, even the monitor stood on top of the CPU!
Odd_Bumblebee_3631@reddit
Itbwas pretty common to have office PCS udner the crt monitors.
mixedliquor@reddit
Yup, because we were interacting with the PC during startup by inserting disks in the A: and B: drive. Systems like the Apple // were designed around this concept, placing the monitor directly on top of the disk drives and mainboard.
As hard disks became popular, the PC started to migrate farther and farther from the physical desktop.
Odd_Bumblebee_3631@reddit
Wait are you talking about booting from CD everytime? I was assuming that we dont use DVDs that often anymore so thats why a lot of people put them away these days.
mixedliquor@reddit
Booting from CDs came like a decade later. I'm talking about 5.25" floppies.
dertechie@reddit
Mine lives on the floor. Once I move it into a smaller case it will fit on the desk.
Curun@reddit
Different room!
YouveBeanReported@reddit
Mine's on the ground. I don't trust my cats with it on my desk and they used it as a jumping point for wall shelves. The server PC is currently on a bookshelf so I could get it nice airflow, but might get screwed under the desk later since 99% of the time I SSH in.
Putting a sheet of MDF under your PC is fine for the fans and the dust difference is minimal.
I don't want the distraction of fans in the corner of their eye while trying to work and I like having more space to work.
hextanerf@reddit
sff people like me put them on the desk
AikaterineSH1@reddit
I custom built my desk to have oodles of drawers, there’s no space underneath for my pc, I honestly wouldn’t want it there anyways. fortunately I made this desk pretty big and it sits on top.
gcwhite1@reddit
Right now it is only because I haven't built the shelf for it
jumboshrimp09@reddit
I have a standing desk so no way any PC tower is going on top lol. Floor is so much nicer imo anyway cuz it maximizes actual desk space for desk things.
whiteKittiey@reddit
dust collects at the floor so that's the issue.
MeeloLamb@reddit
Carpet noob here. I have 2 PCs and the one of my floor gets used once a week and is 5x dirtier than the one on my desk. With a sample size of two I would choose Desk>Floor for carpet noobs.
dattogatto@reddit
I don't have any room on my desks for it, so I have it on a rolling stand beneath my desk so that it's not directly on the carpet. Makes it easy to pull out or rotate as needed too.
Elitefuture@reddit
I put it on my desk, it looks nice and I don't want it on the floor.
You get a lot more dust if you put it on the floor. The dust on the floor gets blown around over time and the PC is more likely to suck it up.
So you gotta get a pc stand or mount to keep the PC elevated off the ground.
buttersyndicate@reddit
Only office workers are allowed to fill their computers with filth without getting the kind of scolding a teen gets on obvious hygene issues.
semidegenerate@reddit
I built a little stand out of scrap lumber, so my PC sits about 5 in / 13 cm off the ground. I have limited desk space and, and I don’t really care about my PC’s aesthetics.
That little bit of lift drastically cuts down on the dust and cat hair that get sucked up by the fans or stuck in the filter screens.
TurdFerguson614@reddit
Not a chance in hell I put anything bright or reflective next to my monitor, even if I had the space to do it. Desk top is for monitors and (audio) monitors. I overhauled my PC out of the budget case I started in recently. Bought all matching fans for one of my favorite cases. It's under my desk, pushed back far enough so that I can't see it while rolled up to the desk.
BowlJumpy5242@reddit
My PC has ALWAYS sat under or beside my desk. My current build is in a large heavy case, (be quiet! Dark Base Pro 900 rev.2) so I built a low “wheeled cart” for it to sit on. Makes it easier to move it out for cleaning.
Haytham__@reddit
You are the only person who'll ever see your PC. Nobody cares about other people's PCs. I moved mine under the desk because of lower noise from fans and saves me desk space.
I look at my ultrawide OLED while gaming, not at a metal box of parts.
corpsejelly@reddit
Mine is on my desk. I paid too much for my hardware to be hidden.
whoopsie-cushion@reddit
Floor as I need my desk space unfortunately
Advanced-Mango-420@reddit
I put mine with the glass against the wall so you can't even see inside. I also put it directly on carpet 😗, no issues in over 10 years
Single_Classroom_448@reddit
Personally mine sits on a very small raised bit of plastic off the ground by about 3" but it should probably be a bit higher up, I did consider putting mine on the desk especially with the space I have, but my cables are really poorly managed
grvwd@reddit
I go to a weekly LAN meetup, so having it on my desk makes it easier to access and pack up. SFF so it doesn't take up a lot of space either.
RumbleTheCassette@reddit
Let's see...
My current build is is on my desk. My last build was on the same desk. My build prior to that was on the floor because I had a smaller desk. My build prior to that was on a book shelf next to my desk because it was that same smaller desk.
So I guess if I get a big enough desk I'll put it on my desk.
PoppaMeth@reddit
The ones at work are on the desks beside the monitor due to space constraints. Mine at home are under my desk. The ones at work are quite where mine can ramp up the fans quite a bit while gaming or encoding video. No way would I have my home PCs right next to my ear.
SilentlyAsTheGrave@reddit
Used to do that. Got dusty much faster. Now it sits on the desk away.
Johnl317@reddit
Top of desk for the past 20+ years
CZsea@reddit
I use ikea lerberg
IndyPFL@reddit
My PC case was too big to fit on my desk with two monitors, so I bought a sturdy nightstand to put it on top of so it isn't too close to the ground.
Bonus is I can put extra parts and cables and etc inside the nightstand.
ad5316@reddit
My desk has a shelf for the PC underneath, so its below the desktop but off of the floor. Honestly i would never want it on top if possible - just constrains the amount of space available
pythonic_dude@reddit
If you use some of the more obese dual/triple chamber monsters, in a multi-monitor setup without monitor arms, it can get impractical very fast. Otherwise, nah, it's good, it's pretty, it collects measurably less dust. At work we have a company policy to have PCs on desks, because across 150+ machines it stretches maintenance cycles by a lot. At home, I just like it there even if I don't need to physically interact with it like ever. You do you, just keep it away from carpets, pets, and beverages (or give it extra clearance above the carpet, make it a comfy spot for a pet without compromising performance — no top aio! — and give it a cupholder, lol).
Gravexmind@reddit
Mine is on my desk. But mine is also SFF, so it’s not that big.
tincookies@reddit
I keep mine on my desk because it's big enough and I don't want to chance knocking a drink into my PC
EpsiasDelanor@reddit
Floor. If on desk I'm afraid it might fall to the floor.
maejsh@reddit
Have mine on desk because of when I raise the desk up and down while working. The pc itself is as anonymous as possible.
mangyrat@reddit
I put both mine under the desk.
Yes i have led fans, glass windows AIO displays for looks and you don't see it when you sit at the desk.
10 foot desk is where i keep monitors, keyboards, bourbon and all the junk i am to lazy to find a home for.
I tired to put them on the desk a long time ago and it irritated me listening to the fans when gaming.
Chaseydog@reddit
Mines under the desk on a small platform to keep it off the carpet. Desktop is used for 3 monitors.
theangriestbird@reddit
Mine is on my desk, but that's because it's SFF. I think that's a key piece: you put it on your desk if it's small enough or you have enough room, and then everyone else just puts it under the desk.
captainstormy@reddit
It's personal preference. I actually have a little side table for my PC beside my desk.
I went with this one so I could use the plug for things like my external HDD dock and such but they have tons of options.
Doing it that way I get the nice aesthetic of it being visible, it gets off the floor, and with my sit stand desk the cables don't actually need much slack to go all the way up or down.
ninjabell@reddit
I put mine on a bench that protrude out from under my desk.
AltruisticTop5978@reddit
On the floor next to the desk.
Too much stuff on the desk to fit my desktop there.
bucketofardvarks@reddit
Yeah between my large mouse pad, two monitors and a cat bed my pc has always lived on an IKEA cart next to my desk. I've also never had any interest at all in RGB components and I suspect these things correlate
PolarFoxinvades@reddit
I put mine under the desk on the floor because I have a small table. I am also not a fan of RGB so I strictly choose non RGB parts which are a little bit cheaper and little bit less power hungry.
DIYspodoba@reddit
I put my pc on the desk because I can have access to everything. My pc is normal, doesn't look cool. Also, the cables of some periferals can be on the short side so that's another reason.
RlyRlyBigMan@reddit
I've got a mini fridge next to my desk and my PC rests perfectly on that.
yyg-linux@reddit
i have dogs and a 70lbs tortoise. the rig stays /on/ the desk
Jankyman_Rgraves@reddit
I have mine under my desk and absolutely have to air dust it way more often. I just don’t feel like retuning my desk to put it up top. I’ll probably end up buying something to set it on to at least keep it off the floor.
ChronoZaga@reddit
You’re fine.
I’ve been building solid-sided, no glass, 0 RGB PCs since ~1996, and they’ve been on the floor since my first tower build. There’s no wrong way to do it, and there’s no need to assume the idiosyncrasies of the online hive mind. Just because it gets upvotes in r/Battlestations doesn’t make it the only way to go.
Metalheadzaid@reddit
I haven't put my PC under my desk in 20 years aka when I built my first one.
It's just inferior to on desk, both visually and performance wise generally
Andy202007@reddit
I haven't got enough space for a desk, so I sit on the floor and my midi-tower case is my monitor stand.
loliii123@reddit
Mines on the floor tucked away in between the wall and desk, lower noise too. I got too much shit on my desk so I need the real estate haha.
(and well it's a giant full tower lian li from the mid 2000's so yeah)
RetrnFThMck@reddit
Yes, it's very common.
Well, this is generally wrong. People also like keeping dust and pet hair out of their PC.
I would put this entire post in "who cares do whatever you want" territory.
Big-Pressure-918@reddit
I have 3 computers. All 3 of them go on top of the desk.
SweetBacon923@reddit
Side drawer or side table. Keep desk clean
Ripe-Avocado-12@reddit
Do what works for you. I used to have mine on the ground, then I upgraded my desk and wanted to show off my build so I moved it up top. Neither are right or wrong. Do what works for you.
One thing to note about placing it on the floor. Don't put your pc directly on carpet as you'll smother any bottom intake fans and your PSU.
Extra-Lawyer-2865@reddit
Its personal preference. You do you. If you don't want to see it/dont have the room you put it under. If you want to see it/have the room you put it on.
