Whats the right way?

What’s the right to strap down on a trailer? I see this all too often but aren’t the straps supposed to be inside the run rail and attached to the frame? Also shouldn’t the ratcheting part be on the passenger side?

Doesn’t matter what side the ratchet is on. It can be 10 on the driver side and 10 on the passenger side for example, or however they’re installed

Technically, it's a FMCSA requirement to go inside the rub rails if the load doesn't extend over them:

Do officers actually enforce that? My guess is that they don't, as often as we all see how just about anything goes when using straps, except not having enough straps, having inadequate WLLs, or having cut/frayed straps.

If they see you going down the road, probably not. If they pull you in for an inspection and can't find anything, you bet your #$$@ they will so they don't feel they wasted their time.

Not all trailers, such as Western, have a rub rail. For the most part, it doesn't matter which side the winches go on. If strapping down something that can roll side to side, then I would belly wrap and alternate which sides the winches are on. For pallets, they can all go on the same side. As long as there are two straps on the first and last pallets and a single strap over all the ones in the middle then it's fine.

more important in this case would be an angle protector on top of the bags so the strap wont tear em open
