Over 51,000 Nissan Kicks Recalled Because The Driver Display Could Go Blue Or Blank

Sounds like Nissan and Toyota both use the same supplier.
willpc14@reddit
Toyota has a software issue where memory overflow causes the screen to go blank. Nissan has a hardware issue with an integrated circuit. The problems are unrelated.

If it’s a software issue why do they require you to go to the dealership? Toyota was raving how the car supports OTA updates when they sold me my 25 Camry.
PotatoGamerXxXx@reddit
Probably because you could borked an update with power interruption and there's no way they let user experience that (and long update not being able to use the screen while driving is a bad look for them)
AndreLeGeant88@reddit
I feel like we probably need a law that gauges not be digital.
willpc14@reddit
I like physical gauges and controls as much as the next guy around here, but the hysteria surrounding screens in the enthusiast community is exhausting. I've driven plenty of old vehicles with dashboards that were partially or fully inop.
dont-YOLO-ragequit@reddit
The issue is one gauge or light being out vs the whole display being the bottle neck and being out every time the component has an issue.
I also doubt these screens are meant to last in scolding hot summer and deep freeze winter cycles like analogue screens.
willpc14@reddit
Well this has to be one of the worst takes I've read on r/cars in a while.
dont-YOLO-ragequit@reddit
They test them to last the first years but between heat/ durability cycles and eventually wanting to not update them( which will open up some risk of breaches and glitches) it's not going to be as useful in 10+ years like analogue panels.
Falloutvictim@reddit
I was concernced about that with my first digital dash, but then I think about the absolute hell I put my phones through and I've never had a phone screen go out. I tend to keep phones for as long as possible and they get dropped repeatedly, banged around and tossed, submerged, used in the pool, left in the sun when at the pool/beach, gotten so hot they tell me to cool them off, left in a hot car, left in a freezing car, used in sub-freezing weather, rained on, dropped some more, and are on my person during most waking hours. If the screen itself was the weak point, we'd know by now.

oopsie! all of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s sports cars with digital gauges are now banned
MNAAAAA@reddit
Most regulations specify new production for this reason - it's why you can still drive RX7's, Miatas, etc even though no new cars can have pop up headlights.
shreddedsharpcheddar@reddit
yeah sure! let's create complex legislation for something that happened to 1% or less of people affected by a recall, for a single model of car
lilkidsuave@reddit
How about it being only for new cars (Also aren't some of those already exempt because of antique?)
lostboyz@reddit
Technically there's no law that says you need to provide a speedometer, but if you have one it's required to work a certain way.
ConPrin@reddit
Most "analogue" gauges are digital anyways. There are little differences wheather the software controlles sone dials or a screen.
mr_bots@reddit
And simpler since it has a stepper motor for each gauge.
lostboyz@reddit
I wouldn't say simpler, it's just an extra part there was going to be a screen regardless. Screen hardware is pretty robust, it's the software that causes the vast majority of these issues which is just as much at play even with stepper motors.
TunerJoe@reddit
This makes no sense, analog gauges can also break the exact same way.

I'd like something along the lines of: if all screens fail, the vehicle still has to be operable in a safe and legal manner. So: consumer must be able to drive, use signals and wipers, adjust climate, tell the speed and a few other things.
Some sort of redundancy to not brick a car that should otherwise be able to provide transportation. What did a base Civic have in 1993? All that should be physical controls. The rest can be on a screen.
bhop_monsterjam@reddit
is this thing the american Juke? never heard of it before
PNF2187@reddit
This essentially replaced the first generation Juke in the Americas, and this second generation also had to pull double duty in replacing both the original Kicks as well as the Qashqai in North America (sold as the Rogue Sport in the US).
BassWingerC-137@reddit
You all told me only Lucids had problems! LOL 🤣
quantum-quetzal@reddit
Now that's a strawman if I've ever seen one. People here love to point out reliability issues.
Energy4Days@reddit
That's one way to get out of a speeding ticket 👀
ConfidenceOne4722@reddit
26V331000 is the campaign tied to the blank or blue cluster issue on 2025 to 2026 Kicks, and NHTSA already shows complaints piling up so owners should run VIN lookup on nissan first and get the fix documented at the dealer. defectfiles.com is useful here because it pulls recalls, complaint counts, and related patterns for the exact year in one place.

What's the plural for Kicks?

I'd go with Kickses.

Kicks or Kicks'

Nissan found a new use for the blue screen of death- your dashboard
LongjumpingLock5875@reddit
I love my combination cluster on my WRX.
Have the middle be digital, and the left/right side be analog that way if the screen goes out, you can still drive normally.
Shmokesshweed@reddit
Same on my 2022 Maverick. The "new" clusters for anything under the Lariat trim are atrocious.
trail-g62Bim@reddit
How my forester is too, which is a good thing because subaru had to extend its warranty for its infotainment also sometimes not working.
cpttucker126@reddit
My Mustang just has the analog gauges and same with my Stinger. They have a small screen in the center but analog everything else. So if the screen dies or the analog gauge dies. I have one or the other to tell speed.
Nintendo1964@reddit
I put on my pants, got in my Kicks, and ordered a McGriddles.
