Did I miss the boat?

Currently a regional FO. Did I miss the boat to join a legacy? I currently have an LCC cjo but the goal is a legacy. My wholly owned regional has a guaranteed flow to my dream airline and I would have no problem staying to wait for my number to be called. However, I think peak retirements are behind us and I think upgrades are slowly gonna start trending exponentially higher as hiring slows down and the retirements slow. Is it worth holding out for an upgrade at my regional to try to get to a legacy and possible flow within five years as they say or is it just a pipe dream at this point? And should I just hope on over to an LCC before I miss the last boat off the island so to speak to get to a major?

The legacies are hiring thousands a year. We are just not in another lost decade yet. All of you guys asking this question really have no idea how much worse it can get.
Physical-Program-509@reddit
I honestly think this sub will physically implode during the next recession

Honestly, I think the most discouraging thing is the randomness of hiring right now. People with 2100TT and 300 Multi are getting CJOs with legacies and people with a 1000TPIC aren’t getting a call. I’ve been in the industry for a while and never seen anything like it, but my advise to everyone get your apps out, update them every two weeks, network, network, network and it will happen!
smacfum@reddit
I have 2100TT and 200 multi as a CFI. Are you telling me that I can get hired at a legacy?
Capital-Cricket-1010@reddit
airlines are hiring more like competitive finance jobs than an airline job. went to a fancy school like yale for undergrad-sweet cjo to a legacy with 300 multi. have an impressive mba from UChicago-boom hired with 2000 hours. they’re done with guys that meet the flight requirements but have nothing else impressive about them. clicking through some bullshit online degree at riddle isnt enough anymore. have to be unique
Several-Village5814@reddit
What? I don't think legacies are hiring people from Yale just because they are from Yale. What do I know....but I doubt many pilots even have a prestigious degree.
MyPilotInterview@reddit
That’s not what I’m seeing. Pilots are very homogenous and when I get an Ivy League candidate, Doctor, former Wall St guy I actually worry about them more than a guy who interviews with a degree from Liberty, average flight time, etc. Hiring committees need to be reassured a surgeon, actually will be happy flying, apply sound CRM, and transition well to the cockpit.

im seeing 7 inch penises and perky naturals help across the board

I think people focus too much on the hours people are hired at and understate how important it is to actually interview well too. I personally know people with tons of PIC hours that thought interview prep would be a waste of time and money because they have way more hours than what their buddy with 0 PIC who got a CJO and they felt the whole thing was in the bag. “If they invite you to interview then they already want to hire you”. Lo and behold, they don’t prepare at all and get a TBNT.
Matuteg@reddit
Can you upgrade? Most of my buddies and myself got CJOs with legacies after 300-400PIC hours. I flew with some FOs on my regional getting calls with DL right now (1200SIC). We all have degrees
Over-Scientist-3264@reddit
Southwest is calling FOs at regionals too from what I’ve heard. Though it’s been well established that they’ve been all over the place lately with their hiring preferences
JGWentworth-@reddit
Missing peak retirements doesn’t mean future retirements are bad. Will hiring be as good as it was in the last 3 years? No. But that shouldn’t stop you from pursuing a legacy.
I think there’s way too much comparison to the post Covid hiring world, which was a blip on the extreme. You’ll still see plenty of movement, just have your expectations in check.
No-Duck4828@reddit
Also known as the best hiring market for airline pilots in history
No-Duck4828@reddit
No. The Spirit thing will back things up for another year, but by the end of 2027, we should be back to a really good hiring market for any existing airline pilots looking to move to a major, ACMI, legacy
Guaranteed flow? Yes, that is a pipe dream. Flow exists, but it is definitely not guaranteed. It speeds up, slows down, and it is certainly possible that it would not exist whenever it gets around to being your number. By and large, flow was a backup for people not making it to a legacy outside the flow
Overall, it remains a much better time for a candidate looking to get out of the regionals than in most of the history of regional airlines. Heck, even the wait time isn't nearly as bad now that regionals offer decent pay
shimmylaws@reddit
Bro Life goes on people retire, airlines buy more planes.
Buddha says to stop worrying about it 🙏
f1racer328@reddit
Either way, being a captain (I know you’re an FO OP, but you’ll upgrade eventually) at a regional is still a damn good paying job compared to the rest of the corporate wage slave jobs there are in this country.
Baystate411@reddit
Not at UA. We dont peak until 2031.
AvailableAd4131@reddit
Can only speak for SWA not the legacies but there are currently 11k active pilots and its projected that roughly 50% will retire in the next 14 years as well as plans for 672 new 737s in the next 5 years, obviously many aircraft will be retired with that but the outlook is still strong, a new wave is coming for the majors in the future.
Worried-Ebb-1699@reddit
First- get off social media and stop reading up on the “missed wave”. You’re in a much better spot than (insert ANY CFI)
Second- do what is best for you and your needs. Chasing a legacy job by leaving its flow probably won’t work too well in your favor. The “fog a mirror” days are gone.
If I had a flow to my dream airline or had to chase more flight time and go elsewhere, given all that is happening now with our insane oil/ fuel prices etc, you’re probably better off staying put.
Upgrade, work on your volunteer work etc.
But please don’t leap frog, that isn’t gonna work
SRM_Thornfoot@reddit
Take the job you want to be at should the industry come to a sudden screeching halt.
Several-Village5814@reddit
lol already has a LCC CJO
Swimming_Way_7372@reddit
Did you miss the boat on the fact that historically it takes years to get to a legacy? You only know a small fraction of the history of hiring amd that is probably what you saw in the post covid hiring anomaly.
sprulz@reddit
Which WO? Mine’s been losing high time FOs and newly upgraded CAs left and right. DL hired most of them.
TemporaryAmbassador1@reddit
There was a wave, you missed the big one, your career outlook still is better than several of the previous decades and most of the history of the entire industry. You already have regional job, doing better than most.
phlflyguy@reddit
Which airline? AA still has a few years of heavy retirements but the aircraft order book of DL and UA is stronger. That means all 3 will probably keep hiring as a similar annual pace.
