Thinking about quitting

I do local in a sleeper, safety told me we are no longer allowed to do splits anymore since I go home everyday, but the loads they give me the shipper and receiver takes long to load/ unload and picking up 2 loads everyday live loads on both ends if I don’t do splits I can’t make it home but they constantly send me to places that take all my time I signed up to be home everyday not sleep in the truck
Jumpy-Daddy5809@reddit
I worked at three previous trucking jobs that all paid less than 30 an hour without overtime very expensive health insurance, and lots of labor
I now work at a job that pays 35 an hour with full overtime benefits off all holidays and paid for all holidays as well free health insurance and the health insurance is very good. Union benefits as well
And I can tell you the reason I’m making profoundly more money with less physical labor is because of one reason
I quit and found a better job. It’s really not that hard just quit. It’s OK to quit my life is so much better thank God I quit the last three jobs my life is so much better because I quit that it’s not even funny

What job?
Huzul34@reddit
That’s not true in all Markets across the US some places Like fl are not that way
OldFizzgig@reddit
LTL..?
Auquaholic@reddit
Sounds like you need an actual local job. Start looking.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I applied for local position, not to sleep in the truck, not even once they said sleep in the truck when I applied it said local home daily
JOliverScott@reddit
The fact that they gave you a sleeper truck indicates they fully expected you to roll over and accept not getting home daily, otherwise you'd be in a day cab. If you don't stand firm in that conviction then you're going to find yourself a regional home weekly driver.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I can find a truckstop to park at instead of the yard and safety wouldn’t know if I went home or not 🤷♂️
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I did layover 2 times I got paid for 24 hours and $100 layover but they are getting to comfortable at trying to do that I don’t like doing layovers maybe once in a blue moon but not often

Jobs lie.

A lesson to be learned for newbies.

. <—-that little dot there? It’s called a period. You use it to end a sentence.
Also, tell safety to fuck off and mind their business. They clearly don’t understand your job’s duties.

I did layover a couple times and still got paid for 24 hours and $100 layover but I don’t wanna do that a lot

Okay so then quit. Terms have changed with your company as for as splits and you’re unable to follow their new standards due to personal preference. Good luck
FCMatt7@reddit
Not a standard, it's the law.
External_Result_8560@reddit
“No, companies are not legally required to allow the split sleeper berth option. While the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) allows drivers to split their mandatory 10-hour rest period, companies are legally permitted to enforce stricter policies based on their own operational safety and delivery standards.”
Standards have changed.
FCMatt7@reddit
Can't use sleeper split when you're home every night. It requires you to take the long break in the sleeper.
ImaginaryCatDreams@reddit
As long as there are 10 or more hours before you return to work it is not an issue.
threeglude@reddit
Incorrect. Why then, in Samsara and EVERY other Elog, it won't give you back your time if the long break wasn't in the sleeper???
You can be off duty for a year after splitting your log, go back to work and STILL be on violation if you didn't show 7-8 hrs minimum in the Sleeper!!
External_Result_8560@reddit
Ooo I get what you’re saying now. Company deciding to follow the law now
NoRelation1491@reddit
How much experience do you have? If you have under a year, I would just embrace the suck and then move on.
But I agree with you, I would local specifically to not sleep in a truck and be able to be part of my family.
When you’re eligible for sad jobs local tankers the way to go
jmzstl@reddit
Get it in writing what they expect you to do in order to make it home. They might tell you to drop the trailer and bobtail out, or bring your last load straight back to the yard if the timing will be too tight. If they tell you the answer is to sleep in the truck, then you know that you'll have to quit and find a job that suits your needs.
FloydT3@reddit
How long have you had your license? You may be better suited for flipping burgers.

Can’t do Otr anymore with a son 🤷♂️
ImaginaryCatDreams@reddit
I worked with a guy that had a similar problem, he solved it by getting a garbage route. He started about 4:00 a.m. and had to continue until the route was run. If he finished at 2:00 p.m. he went home if he didn't finish till 8:00, That's when he went home.
I believe he was making close to 80,000 a year. He was off every weekend unless there was a Monday holiday then he had to work Saturday. It was local so no log book
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I applied to be local not sleep in the truck
Longjumping_Wolf_761@reddit
so at the moment you are doing splits and when you finish it's not usually the same time everyday, so next day you are starting (after a 10 hr break) at a different time from what you started the day before. Not doing splits might put you back to where you can keep regular hrs even though , some days, you may not be able to go home. to some people that might not sound so bad at all, especially that it saves you from driving home just to get back to work after 10 hrs.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
They told me no more splits
Longjumping_Wolf_761@reddit
but doing splits makes you start your day at different hrs of the day. some days at 8 , others at 10 am or 11. doing the 14 hrs at least you keep more regular hrs, even if somedays you cant go home to sleep.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
The places I go to takes long and eats up my 14 that’s why I did splits to make it home, now I can’t even do that
ImaginaryCatDreams@reddit
Do you qualify for the 16-hour rule exemption? I've never used it, It's supposed to be just for local drivers.
Longjumping_Wolf_761@reddit
with regular high hourly pay some people would kill for that job. if the pay is no good, then it d probably suck. i d ask for extra money if i have to sleep in the truck, at least some small bonus
IntelligentCandy8716@reddit
The pay excuse is always bullshit. That's what single or soon-to-be-single truck drivers look for: $$$$
It shouldn't be impossible to do this job AND have a life worth living.
FCMatt7@reddit
You can only do splits if you are sleeping in the truck every night. Not Legal if you're home every night.
ImaginaryCatDreams@reddit
It's not an option, he's got a kid
BB5er@reddit
I have friends making 80k+ in day cabs. 12 hour days, home nights and weekends. Go find something better.
Alarming_Star_6549@reddit
Sounds like you need to move on. There's probably some other local work you find hopefully. If not you'll have to embrace that sleeper, I like mine but I'm only in it 4-5 nights a week. Good luck
Wide-Engineering-396@reddit
Use 16 hr exemption once a week , don't do second load , tell them "i can legally do it"
Pigman737@reddit
When split logging it says you have to record so many hours in the sleeper berth, does not say you actually have to be in the sleeper berth.
Log it correctly and keep going home. If safety says you can’t then ask them how you will be compensated for the time logged in the sleeper as if you can’t use it as you see fit they have to pay you.
Off duty and sleeper are your time, they have no say over where you spend it. Now if they say it’s for the security of the truck then it has to be logged as on duty and compensated accordingly.
Sounds like you should be doing drops but no one wants to put in the work to make it happen.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I did 2 hours sleeper and 8 hours sleeper at first but now they telling me to off duty when going home that’s when violation occurs
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I did, they said no split since I go home everyday
JavyBarrera25@reddit
Yeah I remember doing local in a sleeper picking up containers for the guys that go to the ports bringing them back to the yard, whenever something would happen with that load, break down, delayed, late load or not ready or overweight, nope they’d tell us “well you have a bunk so you can wait around for it” or “Take it back stay there until next morning and bring it back” man I hated those times especially during the winter. I love my yard dog job with a set schedule when I come in and immediately be done when my shift ends.
AgreeAndSubmit@reddit
Ok, some punctuation would help make sense of what you're trying to say. But, if you don't want to sleep in the truck, then drive a daycab. If their loads were possible under legal hours to get you home daily, then you'd have a daycab in the first place. You got a sleeper because the intention is for you to sleep in it. If you like the pay and benefits enough for you and your family, then you suck it up. If you're a decent driver, with some decent experience, and not hitting shit all the time, then start applying.
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
Maybe they should’ve put in the application that we won’t be home everyday if we can’t to splits to make it back home 🤷♂️
Longway23544@reddit (OP)
I applied for local position not to sleep in truck, I have a son I can’t be Otr or sleep in truck, they told me I’ll be home everyday they didnt mention anything about me sleeping in the truck
