That looks clean. And functional

I like how the dog is making eye contact in almost every photo ... you are being monitored
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
Oh he was PISSED being stuck in the car š
Odd-View-1083@reddit
Phase 1- Completely empty all savings and checking accounts and max credit to purchase G wagon. Phase 2- Harvest and sell one kidney and cash out sonās college fund for new wheels.
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
Haha you should take a look at the used market for these vehicles, not as bad as you may think.
Odd-View-1083@reddit
Gotcha
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
well that's the new generation. Try a 2013 like mine and report back.
AwesomeBantha@reddit
Iām a diehard Land Cruiser fan but I have G-Wagen lust phases.
The biggest surprise to me after doing some research was that adaptive cruise stops working after going above like 35s, and that Mercedes themselves doesnāt even know/want to fix it to the point that every 4x4^2 and 6x6 does not have adaptive cruise. Brand new $350k cars with no adaptive cruise because theyāre not able to recalibrate or relocate the sensors.
Shpixx@reddit
Looks amazing. Love the doggo' out the window.
AbbreviatedArc@reddit
Yep I always upvote for doggosaur
TheGaianMind@reddit
Photos on Squaw Pass? Always a great backdrop.
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
Bingo! Just discovered it yesterday what an excellent cruise
ScarHand69@reddit
Try to get your hands on a G 4x4^2
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
The goal with this is a baby squared. Looked at them in the past but the 463a 63 squared is the only one I'd want, not the 463 550
ScarHand69@reddit
I was kinda kidding. Donāt they start at like $150 or $200k? Yours is an awesome build. Are you planning on doing portal axles?
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
Haha yeah the first gens can be had for 125-200k but the new gens are 2-3x that.
No portals planned, this is perfect for what I had planned. If i go portals I'll just get the squared and have everything from the factory.

Been looking at this as my next vehicle next year. Any advice on buying? Any mileage milestones to look out for maintenance when buying? These seem sturdy vehicles and motors but wanted some real world experience. How is traveling with it long term? Are accessories pretty normal in cost compared to other over-landing mods?
cookerz30@reddit
If I stepped up into anything bigger than my Tundra, I think I would pick the Diesel options.
u/salad_dressing_dude What kind of real-world mpg are you seeing?
Majrdestroy@reddit
As somebody who works on an 04 Sequoia a lot, the bigger Toyotas are nice. What dieselās would you recommend? I havenāt found one past 2004 that I like. The Colorado I have been liking in that 4 cyl diesel, but an older Mechanical injection diesel just is so much better to me. I have had zero fuss out of the two I owned (Mitsubishi Pajero 2.6l and the 300TDI)
cookerz30@reddit
I haven't owned any myself, but that really depends on how big you want to go. I would argue that most diesel options for smaller trucks in the US are pretty niche. The Ford Super Duty was super popular in Montana, and I have friends who are putting lots of highway miles on it and giving it good reviews.
Personally, I'm not planning some bigger slide-in build, but that would be the route I would take if stepping up in size. The Colorado seems overpriced, and having the payload/capacity of any 2500 would just make sense.
Majrdestroy@reddit
I concur. My only worry is that I donāt like uber complex vehicles, and larger V8ās just arenāt my favorite. I wish we had more I6 and I5 diesel options in the US. I hopefully will be getting a better job in the next year and a 300GD four door looks to be the sweet spot if RTT or backcountry camping. If not, a 2500 truck might be the move.
I typically like smaller rather than bigger. I donāt need a lot of creature comforts.
cookerz30@reddit
Absolutely agree for smaller vehicles. I still have my 95 Miata, and for just me, that was the ultimate road trip vehicle.
Check out Basil Garage; they are pumping out some great rigs. He shows the benefits of the bigger campers + suspension upgrades.

salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
Averaging 12-13 MPG. Diesel would be great but would need to look at an older model and I prefer the creature comforts. Really want to do a Wolf conversion and may look at a Cummins crate on that.
Majrdestroy@reddit
What older Diesel model 4 doors would you recommend? I 100% donāt dig creature comfort so anything old is fine.
foodfighter@reddit
If you want a good old-school diesel G-Wagen rabbit hole to fall down, research "Otto", arguably the greatest G-Wagen overlander that has ever existed.
Majrdestroy@reddit
This is what I am talking about. Thank you very much.
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
Messaged you above but pretty light on diesel knowledge with these. Club GWagen is the source for ya.
MediumCalligrapher28@reddit
I own a 2004 G500, been driving that one for 10 years . Plenty of Offroad and excellent car for this⦠the three lockers differentials make a huge difference
The only downside itās the electronics.. the engine itās super durable
Majrdestroy@reddit
Is this more ādoor locks and window regulatorsā electronics or āECU failā electronics?
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
I'd be interested to see what he's dealt with. I've done a few bits of maintenance and have learned the ins and outs of the doors. Nothing intimidating but I'm sure there are some interesting decisions around the vehicle, just haven't had to come face to face with them yet.
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
I get this question a lot and it's tough to give a single recommendation because people's wants/needs are different. Overall, look for no rust, solid service history, and pay for a legitimate PPI who knows these vehicles.
You won't find a US G Class with a diesel. They started importing in 2000 and all have been petrol. You can find older imported models though if you're committed to that. I'd argue these v8s aren't overly complex. The 5.0L V8 in the 2000-2009 G500 is an excellent engine, and the G550 5.5L V8 is also stout as well as found in other models, so decent parts availability and serviceability.
For traveling, it depends on what you're used to. It's a 3 ton dual solid axle vehicle, and I've known quite a few bougie customers who purchased one blindly just because of aesthetics and trash the ride. I love how it drives, especially with the new suspension on it. Really comes down to personal taste but I've had three of these with maybe 100k miles across them and always felt comfy on trips.
As for accessories/aftermarket, it's a far cry from Toyota but it's becoming more approachable, but on average they carry a premium over Toyota goods. Jackwagon Overlanding has become such a great resource for the community, not just importing products but designing and manufacturing them to make some of these more approachable.
Feel free to DM if you have more questions.
Majrdestroy@reddit
King. Thank you. Coming from 4 plus our trips in a single cab, I am sure these are a dream ride comparatively.
Messaged on the other comment, but any specific Gen dieselās you rec would be great. Any specific maintenance you like to see done on these before buying?
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
No glaring Achilles heels I'm aware of on the US specs but I have minimal knowledge on the EU diesel options. A great resource is clubgwagen.com!
kmllxp37rn6dj@reddit
G-wagon are very boxy. Always check corrosion where water can still, near windows, rear gate, etc. G-wagon up to 2019 are much more easy to maintain than 2020+ (to many electronic components, very expensive to maintain).
salad_dressing_dude@reddit (OP)
All correct, except I think you mean up to 2018. 2019 is the beginning of the w463a generation.

Without knowing your budget you may be surprised. They're in a great spot right now.

Is that the german flag variant M3 emblem?
