Free/cheap places to hang out in the late afternoon/early evening?

My partner's friend has moved in with us and I desperately need time away from her. I work around Vickery Meadow and get off work around 3pm. Any good places for computer work, reading, or a drink where they won't kick you for not buying much? Extra points if it's near a dart station

Whole Foods, Half Price Books, Barnes & Noble, Vickery Park library branch, SMU’s Fondren library (until like 8 or 9pm), SMU’s student center (probably also one to 8 or 9pm).
The Ikea is just a bistro.

SMU is a private university. The general public is not allowed to just hang around in any of the buildings on campus. I went there. They arrested people for doing just that. SMU is private property and reserves its campus grounds and facilities primarily for university students, employees, and official guests. The university policy states that campus grounds are normally not open to the general public for leisure, hanging out, or unsponsored events. https://www.smu.edu/businessfinance/facilities/events/for-external/guest-faq Your other suggestions are actually good and cheap ideas. I just don’t want this guy to get in trouble with the SMU Campus, Dallas, Highland Park, or University Park Police. All of whom have jurisdiction over the university grounds.

The FAQ you cited is specifically for hosting an event. There are plenty of spaces that are open to the public and welcoming towards everyone. SMU has two public museums on campus as well as a lot of other spaces open to guests. law-enforcement isn’t an option unless someone is causing problems and refusing to leave when asked

That sucks, they are the ones that need to leave. Your space should be yours, especially after work!

I can't believe I went so long without knowing about it, but Westside Coffee – on the literal edge of Highland Park, but thankfully in Dallas so it's not excessively pricey / fancy / bougie – is a remarkably inexpensive coffeehouse (especially at today's prices) with an almost ridiculous amount of space to spread out. It's about three blocks from Lemmon, west of the Tollway, so you could at least take a DART bus there. (OTOH I know it's a bit of a hike to Vickery Meadow from there.)

The Cidercade is only $12. DM me and I can tell you how to get a discount.

Odd Muse Brewery is always chill with folks just hanging out. We do a weekly card game meetup and half the folks who come don’t drink - I usually just do one or two for the two or three hours I’m there and the staff are always really friendly.

Dude this seems sick! I might show up
DreadUlbricht@reddit
Not OP, but what's the demographic like here? Recently out of a relationship and friends kinda went with it so I'm looking for things to get out and do and this actually seems right up my alley!
wellbutrin_rage@reddit (OP)
Unfortunately that's too late for me, as I'd like to be home by that time. That's why I'm looking for something appropriate for the late afternoon, 3-6pm. I appreciate the offer nonetheless!

Its not dallas but I just found out that grandscape in the colony is open 24hrs. Not the stores mind you but the area. They have a nice lawn and security around the clock. It was actually a security guard who informed me. He said hes seen some folks come out at 2am and have a picnic. It had me wondering if there are other areas around open 24 hours where you dont have to pay to exist. Maybe cypress waters (technically dallas but more like coppell)

Library is always solid. Some locations have study rooms you can check out.
