Put down phone... The phuhk!!

Minding my own business with my hand like this. What truly pisses me off is when I'm moving multiple lanes on interstate and it starts distracting me by saying I'm distracted. So while checking mirrors to move over safely. Now I'm wondering and annoyed because the stupid camera is going off. Similarly this bs. I'm guessing it tripped because I had my hand on my pocket. Gees man. Truly miss when I was the captain and didn't need a damn baby sitter

Mirrored sunglasses work wonders with Samsara
jabber1990@reddit
...or just put your damn phone away? and I mean all the way away....like out of arms reach?
putting in your boob pocket isn't "out of the way"
danDotDev@reddit
I can't wait until the first lawsuit where there's an accident that can be blamed on the camara causing a distraction
ksyoung17@reddit
They save enough money by dropping the number of accidents overall.
Keep in mind, you may be a good driver. Many aren't.
danDotDev@reddit
My comment wasn't in regards to effectiveness, just in relation to the frustration of OP's post.
The camera installed in my truck has caused frustration because it went off serval times in a short period for not wearing my seatbelt when I was. The thought struck me at that point is was creating more of a distraction than it was trying to prevent.
Dmactastic@reddit
What about the ones where dudes kill people from being on their phones. Doesn't seem your paying any mind to those? Im not for front facing cameras either but this is an insane wish, given the reason they exist in the first place.
danDotDev@reddit
Nice whataboutism/red herring. Being distracted by an ai coaching camera and being distracted by a phone are not mutually exclusive.
Furthermore, there are also inward facing cameras that don't chime and speak to the driver when recording, which is especially distracting when they go off because of a false detection.
fmccloud@reddit
I can’t wait for people to stop fantasizing about situations that will never happen.
copper_wing@reddit
These companies have enough money to dump into lawyers to make it never worth it to take them to court
Some_Victory_5499@reddit
I was real close to retirement. Same thing similar was happening to me. Should I screw it and retired! The cameras are doing more damage than good.THEY ARE THE DISTRACTION
truckinfarmer379@reddit
This is just one of many reasons why I prefer to drive old stuff without all the babysitting technology. It’s more of a distraction/hazard than any help
Dan942@reddit
companies put it in old shit too now. my old job was throwing these stupid samsara AI in cab cameras even in old 90s rigs. we would often block them with the sun visor or unmount and toss em on the dash cause fuck those stupid things watching what we do all day
DTidC@reddit
My last job I was in a glider and they put only the forward facing cameras in all the trucks. Never cared about our speed or anything since the tickets were for the drivers anyways. My current job went with forward and driver facing samsara and set the sensitivity ridiculously high so you can’t even adjust your temperature without it saying you’re distracted. If I didn’t make what I do, it would have been gone months ago.
heliogoon@reddit
Just last night I was driving over some train tracks and the truck started braking for no reason. It scared the fuck out of me.
DingleberryOrchard@reddit
You don't love your truck slamming your breaks because it's scared of your truck's shadow?
Specific-Aide9475@reddit
That one gives me a heart attack every time. There is no way that’s safer than hitting a shadow.
truckinfarmer379@reddit
Literally. My boss had bought a new to us truck and he had me test driving it on some loads, well it decided to slam on its brakes in an intersection because it was scared of the traffic light. I got back to the yard, said I’m not driving it until something happens with that emergency braking because it’s dangerous, a day later I had my old truck back while the new one was in the shop getting those sensors fixed.
Nolon@reddit (OP)
One day I made a right turn and there was a balloon with helium but I guess it didn't have a lot so it was just kind of floating along. It triggered that damn thing. The truck nearly came to a halt
Wavelength1335@reddit
No joke, i was almost rearended by a cattle hauler (they really love following close) when a tumbleweed blew in front of my rig. The radar screamed blue bloody murder and FULL slammed my brakes on. I dropped from 65 to less than 40 before the truck let off the brakes. This kinda shit is gonna kill somebody eventually.
Justaguy222444888@reddit
The thing is it was never meant to help drivers. Companies can say that all they want but the reality is it’s for purely for insurance. They get a reduced insurance bill and can avoid getting sued hard when a driver totals a car or kills somebody if they were distracted and the company can prove it with the camera.
Nolon@reddit (OP)
Exactly that's what it's for. I truly despise insurance companies too. At least in personal vehicles. My MVR is clean and I've been driving trucks since 2007. The majority of that whole time my MVR has been clean. Now states are different as well so that's another issue in and of itself. When I lived in Wisconsin my insurance for car was 70 a month full coverage. This state I was being charged $140 a month for liability. Now it's $196 because a cop pulled me over claiming I was doing 13 I thought you was pulled me over for doing five over because we're in Louisiana and that's something they would do. I was really pissed off cuz I thought that's what he was doing. The judge turned into a minor vehicle citation of some sort. He didn't specify. On the MVR in this state it shows up as a conviction a minor conviction and so the insurance company is charging me $53 a month extra because of that
kannin92@reddit
My company put AI in one of our fleets to test it. The entire fleet said we will all quite as a group after 3 days. They pulled it from there trucks and have left the passive G sensor cameras that have been in the fleets for years alone.
Voxicles@reddit
Mine dings about every 60 seconds saying “please mind your lane”. I’m looking straight forward, both hands on the wheel, in the center of my lane…. I don’t understand what it thinks I’m doing. Usually I can ignore it, but sometimes it seems extra loud and gets to me. I give it half a peace sign quite often. No one has said anything about it.
DriberGlenn@reddit
It’s probably the beard.
Legitimate_Diver_699@reddit
And lack of mustache
hoppertn@reddit
Maybe dudes Amish?
Nolon@reddit (OP)
I am Amish 🤣
Inevitable_Meet_7374@reddit
Ok, for real, are you all not allowed to have facial hair above the chin? I have always wondered that
Rotteneverything@reddit
is that you, jebediah?
hoppertn@reddit
Ezekiel cousin! It’s been ages!
Legitimate_Diver_699@reddit
Doubt it no horse a d buggy 😂 Maybe a Mennonite
hoppertn@reddit
Rebel Amish, 400 Horses under the hood or one in front, same thing.
No_Teaching_8273@reddit
That's a nasty beard , takes a man with balls of steel to wear that
Nolon@reddit (OP)
Na uh. It's clean, and I got my beard oil in it. Fancy, fancy. Minty smelling
Drunknmasterr@reddit
Man I had a feeling someone was gonna go after the beard.
He seems like he’d be a nice guy I don’t think he deserves to be bagged on.
illdoitlaterokay@reddit
I think they're just saying the darkness of the beard confused the camera in relation to the hand position. But i could be wrong. Either way thanks for sticking up for people. It's nice to see.
Nolon@reddit (OP)
Oh it's okay. No I mean it never goes off in general. I mean it does sporadically sometimes it'll say stuff like please clear upstruction. I don't know what the fuck is obstructing it but it I guess there's a ghost. As far as the beard it doesn't just go off with the beard. When I'm eating which they don't want us to do no drinking no eating no smoking which I don't I don't smoke. But either way you know it's it's annoying. Especially when it's things like that. Even more so when it comes to changing multiple lanes. I mean that's something obviously I'm going to be doing I'm going to be checking my mirrors and being cautious and being certain that I can move over three or four or five lanes. Yet the damn thing goes off screaming about the distraction.
Round_Rooms@reddit
He can still be a nice guy and not look like a weirdo.
DriberGlenn@reddit
What you mean, Im jealous. No bagging
Nolon@reddit (OP)
It'll be ok.
Mindes13@reddit
You can comfort him when he gets home and tell him how awesome his beard is
Nolon@reddit (OP)
🤣
dimly_hurtful_china@reddit
Naw man, it's the wraparound shades and that thousand-yard stare from twelve hours on the interstate.
Nolon@reddit (OP)
Prob going get rid of the beard somewhat. Def bringing it down
diragono@reddit
They recently put Lytx ai cameras in our trucks. Every time you eat a sucker it starts going off flagging you for smoking. One guy was even sent a disciplinary form from Safety to get written up for smoking.
When our driver manager watched the video you can clearly see him moving the stick around constantly, no glow from it being ignited, and no smoke emitting from it. Our driver manager basically said, yea either your a psycho chewing on an unlit cigarette, or that’s a lollipop so he threw the write up away
These things are annoying enough to have anyways, but ffs if they’re not even gonna watch the actual footage to make sure it’s valid…
deearezed@reddit
Don't put up with the cameras... idk how anyone does
Victorious1MOB@reddit
Wild man. I said there needs to be an AI camera on the desktops then.... make sure you stay on task, no looking away from your computer, no yawning, no taking your shoes off and relaxing at your seat 😂
Not something a mouse jiggler can outsmart either. 😉
deearezed@reddit
Exactly, it isn't there for "safety", it's there for "micromanaging" and "blaming"
Snappypants9@reddit
I agree - we have to learn to tune out the safety alarms to drive safely 🤯
polarjunkie@reddit
I've seen a number of accidents where the following distance warning goes off but gets ignored. I think the false alarms really screw people up.
GronGrinder@reddit
The alarms make me more aggravated. Never been an angry driver before truck driving.
Imsophunnyithurts@reddit
Not a truck driver (though I envy you all), but look up how the Joplin tornado rocked that place. So many tornado sirens that people just eventually tuned them out.
Nolon@reddit (OP)
That's the truth. Like the damn collision thing when it goes off at 2:00 in the morning and you're trying to figure out what's going off I mean at this point I kind of know which ones are going off but I don't know why. Especially when it's the camera going off then I just get pissed off.
jHugley328@reddit
Why do we put up with these AI cams? Oh...thats right, because every trucker cant organize a bathroom break let alone stand up and tell companies to fuck off with that shit.
Maleficent_Lab8672@reddit
The company i drove for put in those lytx cameras for a few months and got so many false alarms from them that they turned off the driver facing cameras entirely. They would only record the driver if you braked really hard or swerved hard. A few drivers were fired at first.
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit
I refuse to drive for any company using this stuff.
Nolon@reddit (OP)
I love how there's areas like where I was just a few minutes ago that I passed through pretty often. That the speed limit is 45 I'm doing 45 and the fucking thing continually goes off saying please reduce speed please reduce speed and I'm just like to what? I'm doing the speed limit. It's truly annoying. Then they've gamified the e-logs. That's another annoying thing. I also seen recently they put some kind of competition thing in there I don't know what the fuck that's about
Mindless_Pandemic@reddit
Yeah. My elogger thinks I'm on 40mph side roads when I'm doing 70mph on the interstate. Yells at me constantly in certain areas.
Mac_encheeze@reddit
I yawn and will get dinged for “drowsiness”
Like damn, I can just yawn a little bit?
that_Delfin_guy@reddit
Scratching my head for too long: distracted. Having my left hand against my cheek like a philosopher: phone use. Part of my shirt covering the seatbelt: no seatbelt.
Lucky me, I can call safety, and then they review the video and remove the infractions. I do my best to avoid them, but it's always so stupid to me. But every rule I have to follow is there because of all the guys who came before me and didn't drive safe. In-cab cameras, using AI or otherwise, wouldn't be a thing if people did their jobs without heavily distracting themselves and getting into accidents.
That said, being told by the camera I'm doing something wrong is also distracting. It would suck though if it just secretly reported my "infractions" and then I would have no recollection of the exact events that transpired when contacted by my safety department.
TLDR: some truckers ruined trucking. It's why we have in-cab cameras.
Serious_Mongoose61@reddit
This has nothing to do with drivers ruining trucking. Ai is being pushed into our lives and there’s nothing we can do about it
Orikshekor@reddit
Rumspringaaaa!!!
OsBaculum@reddit
There it is.
Patalos@reddit
Yup. My favorite is when it yells at me to keep distance when people cut me off then slam on the brakes before I can adequately back away from them.
Annoying things.
kawirider24@reddit
My camera hates when I use a hot sauce packet on my burritos. I can grab my phone and it won't pick it up but the burrito hot sauce packet combo is the one that does it the worst.
PharthSharth@reddit
Yeah my camera yelled at me for phone in hand as I was eating my sandwich last Friday. I just gave it The Office Jim look and i hope someone reviews it.
DriberGlenn@reddit
I thought you were going to say beard
