Who should give way when exiting at an exit point?

Leaving a cafe via small door, you would expect to other to allow you to exit before they enter but some people either have no clue or it is first to the door point wins . Thoughts?

On trains, the rule is people get off first.

Buses too. I've been told off a few times by drivers when people were really slow getting off and I hadn't noticed they were coming...it's hard to see inside buses sometimes!

Exit first. No argument. Basic manners.

Depends which way the door opens imo

I hear that this is such a complex algorithm that they will use it as the new Turing Test.

This is amazing. Can we try it out on tech billionaires?

They would buy the door. Then, anyone who pays a higher subscription for Premium Door Access gets to leave first. If two Premium Door Access subscribers are on either side of the door, they will have an opportunity to buy a single-use Access Boost to gain priority. The first to buy the boost gets to go first. The other user has to watch a 15-second ad while they wait for the door to be free.

I admire your premium tier cynicism.

Anit like the best way to board an aircraft; start at the back and work your way to the front. Priority, First/Business excluded.

The one exiting, obviously

Personally I think you have to let someone leave before you enter even if you got to the doors first
freebiscuit2002@reddit
In practice, it usually depends on whether the door opens inwards or outwards.

I was exiting a train at it's terminus. Doors open and this guy tries to barge in. There's literally nowhere to go, there's a queue of people getting off. I wasn't polite in telling him that he wasn't getting on before we exited. You'd think I'd offered him a bowl of excrement the look he had. Tough, get some manners.
herwiththepurplehair@reddit
The correct answer is "IT DEPENDS WHICH WAY THE DOOR OPENS". That might sound stupid, however.....if the door opens outward, then the person going out gets priority. If the door opens inward, then the person coming in gets priority. This is to prevent the person the door is moving towards from getting smacked in the face by an oncoming door. It's common sense.
the_speeding_train@reddit
I follow the ‘keep moving and get out the way’ philosophy when walking in public. I wish more people did the same.
New_Line4049@reddit
No hard rule. Very variable depending on a lot of factors.
SnooDonuts6494@reddit
It usually opens inward, so I'd open it and stand next to the door, holding it open while they came in. Before leaving.
non-hyphenated_@reddit
Whoever has to pull the door to open it should stand to one side and allow the person that would have to push to use the door first
ZBD1949@reddit
Go low, shoulder into the waist area and don't trip over them while they're lying on the floor

Only wanted a Monday morning coffee. Don't have a desire to flatten a donny just yet ....
sarberanne1@reddit
First to the door decides.
If I was leaving and got there first I might open it for someone to come in, but someone else would get there first and leave first.
If I was arriving and I got there first I would probably open it and let whoever was leaving leave first before I came in.

Ooooh your a door chances - first to the door wins 🏆. Different parts of the country would have different views.
Fine-State8014@reddit
I always let people out first. There's much more room outside.
Unable_Explorer4986@reddit (OP)
Agree. Though weather conditions change the situation ofc 🤔
palaceexile@reddit
I agree that you should be allowed to exit first but there are some extenuating circumstances. Sometime when you pull a door open you are in the doorway and it can be awkward to back out into the street to let someone out. In that case I would let the person enter before exiting.
Unable_Explorer4986@reddit (OP)
With a door opening either way, exit priority on the bases than more people entering, the less space (if small area) increases.
IHoppo@reddit
If it's raining, I'd let people enter first. I'd also hold the door open according to old fashioned rules too (women, children, old people, and blokes who look like they'd be annoyed if they thought I thought they looked old enough for a door hold).
Best_Presentation999@reddit
Totally depends; which way does the door open; how many people going in/out; is it raining outside; how much space is there by the door….
