driver always late to delivery

What do you guys when you have a driver that’s always late to delivery and never answers the phone? I have a driver who for some reason is always late even if it’s a 250 mile run he’s late. Only time he’s ever on time is if he’s headed home lol
FRDyNo@reddit
Fire him.
kaneabel@reddit
Fire him.
diaznuts@reddit
Had this driver been officially disciplined yet with documentation and guidance on how to improve? If not then that’s your first step before moving to firing.
skeletons_asshole@reddit
This - give him the 3 warnings or whatever. Be very clear that if he doesn’t improve, he’ll be fired. Some people need that little confrontation with reality in order to actually get their shit together.
Saying that because I was that driver once. Got the threat, figured it out, doing great now. Glad the company I worked for kicked my ass a bit when I needed it.
Shaxxem@reddit
Some people just have zero care about time management skills. There's no fixing him.
FossMan21@reddit
How late is he? Are we talking a few minutes or hours late.
r0gueuchiha@reddit (OP)
Hours late. I wish it was a few minutes
FossMan21@reddit
There has to be a reason. If you haven’t already talked to him about the issue then it’s definitely needed. I know at my current company they would be more than happy to write me up. Not saying that’s always the answer. Personally I’m a fixer is always want to dig deeper and try to fix the issue rather than sweep it under the rug
r0gueuchiha@reddit (OP)
The thing is I’ve tried talking to him multiple times, I also would like to know if everything is ok. I’ve given him time off to rest but doesn’t seem to be doing the trick.
Humble_Length5150@reddit
Another last ditch idea before you fire him...
Warn him that this is his last chance, and team him with a dependable driver for a run. That way he can "see" how to fulfill expectations. Sometimes folks need things demonstrated.
If they still don't get it after that? Boot their ass to the curb.
Tractorista@reddit
Legitimately it sounds like he just doesn’t care. Young people these days seem pretty uncaring / nihilistic, it’s tough to blame them
PollutionFinancial71@reddit
It’s not just young people. These people exist in every generation. Unfortunately, I have TONS of experience with this across the board.
jabber1990@reddit
then give him a permanent vacation
and then write "company policy violation" or "failure to obey orders" on his DAC.....then he's blacklisted from the industry which means nobody else has to deal with him either
PromethazineNsprite@reddit
Eh I think just firing him could give him the motivation to improve elsewhere, no need to try to blackball the guy
jabber1990@reddit
we don't need people like that in the industry
PromethazineNsprite@reddit
I mean it doesn’t sound like he’s a danger on the road, I don’t see any reason to try and take his career away. OP probably should fire dude, but the driver should have a chance to fix it elsewhere or blackball himself if he can’t get right
jabber1990@reddit
back in my day the ONLY motivation we had was "do it right the first time or else your ass is fired"
caseylain@reddit
Jfc what we need is less people like you on the road.
jabber1990@reddit
no, we need less people on the road in general, this industry needs a massive reset
amazingmaple@reddit
Tried talking to him? You don't talk to him. You tell him that unless he has truck or whether problems he needs to be on time or you're going to fire him. Put gps in the truck and see what he's doing.
Snappypants9@reddit
It’s okay to care about employees - but it is also okay to fire employees you care about cuz they are not making the grade - they guy is sitting somewhere not driving - probably taking a nap - playing a game - or watching porn while you are hoping he will magically improve. He will not.
humpthedog@reddit
Fire him, pretty simple
Just-a-COUNTRY-guy66@reddit
So not sure if you are talking in sense of you the boss and latey is your employee or are you talking about your relay driver? Better context please…
Scotts-@reddit
Time to send his lazy ass to the curb.
If he doesnt want to make money he doesnt need to be driving.
Lpgasman1@reddit
Lazy
Lokisworkshop@reddit
verbal warning, written warning, termination
DumatRising@reddit
If it's a few minutes or so that's not that big a deal, if it's more than 30m-1h then that's a termination.
Everybody's late sometimes shit happens, but if he's not calling you and updating his ETA or telling you what's going on that's a pretty big red flag in my book. Anyone who wants to be notified on every little bit of delay is just micromanaging but anyone who's not letting people know they're gonna be hours late doesn't need to be working in this industry. Sit him down and let him know that he's not performing well and he needs to do better or he's gonna lose the job and then if he doesn't get better on this follow through.
Easy to replace him unless you pay shit. In which case you get what you pay for I guess.
blue_Marlin_34@reddit
What’s late to you? If he does things right but just runs late. Talk to him maybe move appointment times if it’s worth keeping him. Also how long has it been of him doing this? That has a lot to play. I had a boss who should say I was late because he was watching my times compared to the one who has been there 15 years off of one day of training. I beat his ass in the parking lot when I said I quit and he said I was a horrible operator anyways. Mind you I have 5 years experience no points no accidents and have only help 3 jobs in those 5 years. I was with him about 2 months. Don’t be that guy
amazingmaple@reddit
He said hours late
Nachogeddon@reddit
Honestly, I think it all comes down to the paycheck. If people are compensated fairly for their time and effort, you'd probably see a lot more punctuality. It's a simple transaction: good pay equals good work, and that often includes showing up when you're supposed to. Nobody wants to feel like they're wasting their valuable time for peanuts. So yeah, I'd bet a decent salary is a pretty big motivator for being on time.
r0gueuchiha@reddit (OP)
I’ll tell you this, he’s regional, home by Friday night and starts work on Monday morning. Gets paid pretty good. I know whats the answer on what to do with him but today I woke up curious to see what others think about this and what they would do. I’m posting because for a change I wanted to give someone a chance, I stopped giving him dedicated stuff and work with my good shippers bc I don’t want to risk the chance of looking bad. But even after a couple of talks with him I see no improvement.
Opposite_Hamster_404@reddit
What company you own I’ll come work I’m serious
WontSwerve@reddit
It doesn't seem like you or he can explain why he's late.
We had a driver where if you gave him a 4 hour window he's showing up in the last 30 minutes of that window every time. It was fine, and he did it so he could sleep in and not be bothered with another load after. He was local though.
PointNo364@reddit
Get him first come first serve pick up and deliveries If he is getting there late he's obviously over sleeping Either get him late pick up late delivery or early pick up early delovery that's if you wanna keep if not let him go it will cause you more harm in the long run and get you banned from customers
navlgazer9@reddit
You have a gps tracker in the rig ?
Telematics so you know how fast he’s driving or where he’s parked ?
justdan76@reddit
Was about to say, look thru the GPS data. Good chance the truck is parked near his girlfriend or dealer (or hey, she could be both) a lot of the time.
iluvroadz@reddit
Perhaps your expectations aren’t within reality if it’s constantly a problem no matter what I’d say you are expecting more out of him than is feasible or the tasks you think should take a certain amount of time actually take longer
Kenworthsteve@reddit
Bring him in. Face to face . Tell how much you appreciate? What a safe driver he is. And then tell him you know that he can communicate but he's not communicating with you and tell him that he has a week to make two changes. Respond to all phone calls or texts promptly and be on time. One more infraction turn in the keys
tk421yrntuaturpost@reddit
Tell him the appointment time is an hour early than it really is.
r0gueuchiha@reddit (OP)
Trust me I’ve tried that. It’s the only driver I have that this doesn’t work on. He’s also the youngest in my fleet and I struggle the most with. Everyone in my office is kinda over with him.
greedybanker3@reddit
you should replace him with me.
Huzul34@reddit
Get a new driver ?
fhughes642@reddit
Fire him. Hire me. Problem solved 👍
Shut_It_Donny@reddit
Time to let him go.
tk421yrntuaturpost@reddit
Could be. He can do more for your company if he’s working somewhere else.
electronickoutsider@reddit
If you care about the guy and want him to find success at your company, it's time for the talk. Sit him down and ask why he's running late; don't take "I don't know" for an answer. Everybody has a reason for doing what they do, so what does he feel is getting in the way?
Does he not know how to trip plan/manage his clock? Maybe he was just never taught how to coordinate all that in a way that stuck with him, and needs some training. Does he have some kind of health issue, mental or otherwise, that's impacting his ability to get rest or start work at the correct times? Do the appointment times spin in circles through the week, so he's having to go to bed when he usually wakes up on some days? If you're able to accommodate a schedule that has more consistent times, shorter days, and a little more flexibility, maybe that's what he needs to be successful. Some guys (myself included) just can't do the whole "sleep when the clock says, work when the load says" thing, and need a job that lines up with their natural routine a bit better. Is it maybe even all the way back to basic driving skills? If he got thrown into things "off the deep end" relative to his school, training, and experience, he could be wasting all sorts of time just trying to get the truck where he knows it needs to be, and need some more instruction on how to do that.
Of course, these are all reasons, not excuses. Some people just don't give a rat's buttcheeks about work, and he'll tell you that in direct or indirect terms if you have a good enough conversation. Ultimately, it needs to be made clear to him, acknowledged and understood, that he needs to get on time or find another job. You can (and I personally think, should) offer all the help you're able to (training, schedule changes, time off to see a doctor) within the bounds of the work that needs to get done, but he's gonna have to be the one to take that opportunity and choose to succeed with it.
Requettie@reddit
Fire him. No questions asked.
You’ve been too nice, sorry you’re dealing with this.
Gonzotrucker1@reddit
Fire him and get someone else. Plenty of people looking for work.
altaccount90z@reddit
I imagine the pay has got to be low given he hasn’t fired him yet? Not to mention the miles 250 is so low I’d be pissed if I was getting loads like that as OTR unless it’s hourly or %.
mrmayhemP@reddit
I’ll assume its 250miles to salvage the day, cause his previous load of 500miles that he picked up early he delivered at 3pm next day for no reason, so theres not much to choose from. So you get him a shorter run to position himself for next day and not lose the day completely, and hope he gets there early, only to end up there tomorrow at 1pm lol
r0gueuchiha@reddit (OP)
You understand me lol
beenznchiz@reddit
Yeah. Just don't understand why you keep him. You are not doing yourself or him any favors.
Internal-Delusions01@reddit
Or the customers
jabber1990@reddit
oh please, lots of companies pay very little and have no problem hiring people
r0gueuchiha@reddit (OP)
Dawg it’s a white boy. You think they work for cheap? Dude’s previous job was with Russians. He’s only had a couple of months working for me. Just never seen a situation like this in my years of operation
Ornery_Ads@reddit
There are tons of people looking for work, but unfortunately a very high percentage of them don't even bother to show up
Jamo3306@reddit
Does he know you're actually expecting him to be there at X time? I ask because I'm not very timely, but also, my company puts a time on the load that's not really important. Also, your guy may have ADD and "time blindness" is 100% a thing.
Chefjay17@reddit
He's hours late every single time, never answers his phone and has been talked to on many occasions. I've known a few drivers with these issues and in my experience they've been drug users every time. Schedule him for a "random" drug test and make sure it's "observed" meaning the tester has to witness the urine leave his body. If he is getting high in the truck and gets caught, He will be arrested and the truck will be impounded. You could potentially be saving a life here or many, considering the amount of damage he can do if he gets in an accident.
UncleFlip@reddit
What is company policy for late deliveries?
At my company, if driver is late, he gets written up. After a certain amount of write ups it becomes termination.
Excellent_Pay_8782@reddit
You have to fire him. That is the only way to fix the problem. He will know he can't do that at another company. You are sacrificing clients to satisfy a driver who could care less about your company's reputation.
WontSwerve@reddit
Ask him why he keeps fucking up, warn him to stop fucking up, then fire him.
And document all of it.
ConsciousAwareness69@reddit
Is this for Amazon FP?
xenodine@reddit
Fire him and note excessive service failures on his DAC and TWN. He is a net drain and needs to go.
Notzesting@reddit
Are you the dispatcher? Or the manager?
I had a dispatcher at my lost company purposely withholding load information.
Example: Dispatcher gets load @ 9am sharp pickup is at 1pm
Answer: dispatcher withholds said load until 12pm noon, then your expected to do your pretrip and hope there is no traffic.
I tried to dispute with management but they didn’t want to hear it, it sounds crazy but people are shitty.
deezkeys098@reddit
He’s not cut out to be a truck driver. During training the one thing that was drilled into me was never be late. I’m always an hour early everywhere I go now. Even birthday parties and when I’m hanging out with friends 🤷♂️
MajorHymen@reddit
I’ve been late perhaps 2-3 times when it was my fault and all those times it was a failure to wake up to alarm. Like I was a day early 20 miles from the receiver and overslept. Haha I have never been late for any other reason outside of that and road closures for weather. I would probably just fire the person personally.
Ok_Measurement_107@reddit
Sit him down and ask him flat out if he has anyone depending on him and his income. Would they struggle without it and let him know he can't be late even one more time
polarjunkie@reddit
Honestly, there's not enough information to make a call, I probably been late 50 times in 15 years and every single time was a scheduling versus hours of service issue caused by dispatch.
Patalos@reddit
Sounds like you need to fire him if you’ve already made efforts to talk to him and fix it. Clearly he doesn’t care.
711pizzaischefskiss@reddit
Tell him he's been a bad boy, and if he keeps it up you're going to be even more displeased than you are now.
leadpoem@reddit
Spank him too
possibly_lost45@reddit
Fire him. It's not rocket science
edsavage404@reddit
I mean you have his logs, is he stopping multiple times for hours or what?
GovThug@reddit
Nothing Changes, if Nothing Changes
Confident-Ear-9388@reddit
I know it can be upsetting for not getting results for something simple like being on-time, but ask if there is anything going on difficult in their personal life.
Also, I know being ontime is important to most people. But, if the appointment time is more of a window lasting all day, rather than being there within 30 minutes of a set appointment time, its okay.
I just left a company where my boss kept asking me to come in at 8am every day. I had a lot weighing on me after a divorce. Some days In would get in late. My truck wasn't able to be loaded until 8am. The job would send me to closed warehouses, where I would spend the night. After a while of this, i finally made my boss understand I dont punch a timecard like the rest of the employees, and it didn't matter what time I came in since the warehouses were closed when I arrived anyways
Just keep reinstating its important to you.
mechshark@reddit
Have u made sure to tip yourself ur landlord op
Auquaholic@reddit
He's doing it because you allow it.
Snookfilet@reddit
What you permit you promote.
pianodude01@reddit
3 strikes and you're out, fire him.
If you really like the guy and dont wanna fire him, pull him into your office and talk to him. Find out WHY hes late. Sleeping through his alarm? Doesn't know how to trip plan? Unrealistic expectations from the company?
If theyre a newer driver, you might be able to give him some training and teach him how to be on time.
doobersthetitan@reddit
Need mote info..
tvieno@reddit
Don't give him appointment loads.
Or start a policy of if they can't be on time without giving a warning that they'll be late, fire them after a set amount of service failures.
MostlyUseful@reddit
I worked for a guy about 20 years ago that gave you one rule that you had to follow, “Be on time”. One week he has three drivers who were running together on a load and all three showed up late for pickup. He canned all three that week.
Inexona@reddit
Document everything. Tell him you're doing that and you're doing it to improve his punctuality and if he's fired he wont get unemployment.
StructureBetter2101@reddit
Have you explained that he will be let go if he is late? Sometimes they don't understand that on time means early.
kierisbetter@reddit
If you told him it’s at 9 even though it’s for 10 and he still showed up at 10 something you gotta fire his ass
6834lyndon@reddit
Company I’m at we have a guy who is always late like that, they just don’t put him on anything that has any urgency
WeirdTruckGuy@reddit
Final write up, if he’s late again sometime in the next 3 months, he’s fired.
Chamber53@reddit
I’m curious, when you speak to them, what is their response, reasoning, etc? Some folks just have no sense of urgency when it comes to appt time, at work or personal time. There are some people that are ADHD and there will be nothing you can do about it. It will never click unless someone is there with them to baby them each time…telling them when they have to leave to get somewhere on time. And them being buttoned up when it’s home time makes sense, they’re stimulated.
You may have to let them go.
MustangMark83@reddit
LOL and these are the type of people to complain about their pay
AroundGoesThe18@reddit
Chronic tardiness would be a quick termination at my job.
Capital-Sorbet652@reddit
You fire him and hire somebody who’s competent to do the job they’re assigned.
Also I’ve been reading your replies and it doesn’t matter that this guy is young. Or what color skin he has. Some of the worst drivers I know are in their 50s while I know some damn good drivers in their 20s.
TruckerBiscuit@reddit
Being late that frequently is a choice. I've been doing this 5y and other than weather or equipment failure have never been late once. I've cut it damned close on occasion but never incurred a failure of service.
I always shoot to arrive exactly an hour before my appointment time though, which gives me a little margin for error/issue.
As others have suggested maybe giving him an appointment time an hour early is the answer. If it were me I'd tell the guy he's on thin ice and that any more late deliveries will lead to termination.
Give the guy a chance and clear motivation to improve. If he doesn't improve 86 the guy and don't look back.
Jumpy-Daddy5809@reddit
Just give him 2 more warning 3 write ups within a year and if he doesn’t improve can him its really that simple
Specific_Previous@reddit
Maybe he has sleep apnea and is pulling over for mini naps. I did this but was never late as I would set 15 minute alarm.
RobertMosesHwyPorn@reddit
I wish I could consistently be hours late at work and still have a job
JOliverScott@reddit
Communicate expectations and consequences including termination. Be prepared to follow through with consequences or else he'll know you're bluffing and continue to take advantage of you. Start interviewing his replacement now.
coolsellitcheap@reddit
The next guy might wreck the truck. Or call off. Or be bigger problem. So be careful before you fire. How good does he read? Is it the route planning? Does he have trouble finding the destination? Is he burning more fuel because he doesn't take the most direct route?
Marmatus@reddit
I don’t think most of us “have” drivers. We’re drivers, not dispatchers. lol
r0gueuchiha@reddit (OP)
I used to be on the road myself for some years. Had to get into the office as I grew my company
homucifer666@reddit
Is he being given enough time to get there, plus a little extra to account for things like traffic.
r0gueuchiha@reddit (OP)
My last straw was when he was loaded at 1 PM, he stopped at 3 PM to “sleep” and he had 150 miles to go. He was still late for his 8 AM delivery appt.
functional_moron@reddit
Fire him. Maybe he'll learn and be on time at his next job.
fortyeightD@reddit
I would schedule extra time for his trips and be happy that he's driving carefully.
r0gueuchiha@reddit (OP)
I mean for a 250 mile trip, stopping early to sleep (he’s loaded by 1 pm and has stopped at 3 pm to get parking) and not able to make an 8 am delivery appt seems a little absurd not to arrive on time doesn’t it?
