Not balkan, but Algerian definitely the best

Southern Serbia
Syrmin@reddit
First place in Balkan where burek was introduced
Waster500Crystal@reddit
See this guy, dont be like this guy. In Belgrade they sell burek from Sarajevo, yet here he claims something different.
a_bright_knight@reddit
no idea what the hell you're talking about? Burek in Belgrade is 95% the layered Serbian version.
iamunwhaticisme@reddit
Our country has many different types of börek but we have a special type named Boşnak (Bosnian) böreği which is considered the best by many so I guess that says enough.
Syrmin@reddit
Probably Bosnia
macellan@reddit
Burek in Bosnia is much better than what we know as Bosnian Borek in Turkey. Last year during bayram, I was a guest of a Bosnian family. The table was full of different "jufka" pastries. They just call a specific type with minced meat "burek", while all others have different names. I also liked "krompiruša" there, the same thing with patatoes, and there was one similar to "su böreği", I just can't remember its name. I think I will get back to Bosnia someday.
ManualBookworm@reddit
You should come back with such a palate!
macellan@reddit
That's lovely. Thank you.

As a Serbian living in Chicago- some of the best burek i have tried here is from bosnian elderly women.

Ok-Wafer9808@reddit
Bosnia doesn't even know what burek is, they think burek is only with meat.
LumpyAd7650@reddit
While I dissagree that they don't know what burek is, they can sure get hella annoying with that "burek is only with meat" narrative, and behaving elitist about burek. It's not a food that they made up and they sure as hell don't make it better than everyone else, so it's extremely annoying.
ManualBookworm@reddit
/s skipped you in life, my friend. I manifest a bunch of böreks (just the ones with meat) your way.
LumpyAd7650@reddit
That comment makes absolutely no sense, niđe veze. But it's to be expected from a bosnian.
ManualBookworm@reddit
Again the /s missed you, friend.
TesticleSandwiches@reddit
But the meat ones taste the best.

Not by a longshot, börek in turkey was positively divine compared to bosnia or serbia, and ive had good burek in both

Bosnia and Herzegovina and it’s not even close.
Even the local gas station burek is better than any fast food Burek you can find in Slovenia.
Great. Now I’m hungry.
Good-Hand-8140@reddit
I'm in Vojvodina, Serbia and the only burek places visiting here are from Albanians or Bosnians.
DifficultWill4@reddit
Ironically, most fast food burek places in Slovenia are run by Bosnians or Albanians
tipoftheiceberg1234@reddit
😱😱 don’t tell me they’re the ones making the oily round burek that’s like a pie
Esdoorn-Acer@reddit
Every burek place in Slovenia is Bosnian or Albanian owned.
Unable-Stay-6478@reddit
Esdoorn-Acer@reddit
Fun fact: burek you find in Slovenia is made and sold by Bosnians and Albanias. Not Slovenians.
sgtmajordeal@reddit
Youve never been to turkey i see... bosnian burek is upper midle class, while turkish is the elites running the world.
While i know burek is a point of national pride for bosnians, og turks truly do it better.
HeyVeddy@reddit
Burek in Turkey uses more dough, oil, and doesn't fill it up with meat. It's a great oily dough really while the bosnian one actually has meat in it
ChrisRedfield696969@reddit
You Like meat?
HeyVeddy@reddit

MysticEnby420@reddit
The best chef in the world right now is definitely someone in the Mediterranean's grandmother so I believe you. There needs to be a cooking show with different nations sending their respective grandmothers to make the best food of all time.

Ahh.. I wish I could say my mom makes it better against this but somehow my böreks tastes and way more diverse than her repertoire… I really don’t know how that happened!!
Substantial-One1934@reddit
It depends on the baker,in every country in the Balkans you can eat a good one.
Electrical_Waterbed@reddit
All of them are awesome and delicious, but for me the best one is from Albania and the Gorani people from Kosovo.
welpbear@reddit
This guy bureks!
theredcometofakagi@reddit
To be honest, I've only had burek/pita made by Albanians, Bosnians, people from Sandzak (so I guess technically Serbia and Montenegro), as well as Turkey, and we are just talking about kolpita (top right picture posted) then the best I have had is in Sarajevo made with a sac.
If we are talking different varieties like slagana/layered burek or cigara burek, then it is Turkey.
The picture on the bottom looks like jabukova pita, I wonder if that's just an ex-Yugoslav thing, cause I've never seen sweet burek in Turkey.
Glittering-Poet-2657@reddit
Out of all the Balkan bakeries in my city, the best comes from a Bosnian one.
Floydcro@reddit
You should know that it is Bosnia.

Albanci i hercegovci
IndependentWrap8853@reddit
Hercegovci? No way. Ja sam Hercegovac i nema šanse da ćeš naći vrhunsku pitu/burek bilo gdje u Hercegovini. Ima OK mjesta ali nije to to. Hercegovina ima sasvim drugu kuhinju, pita je tamo uglavnom pre-suha i pre slana. Na pitu se ide u Bosnu.
oohCrabItsNotItChief@reddit
I would looove to taste all of them. I have very biased opinion, because any time I go to vacation I eat burek in Croatia for breakfast. Everything just adds up quick: I'm on vacation, well rested, early warm (not yet hot) morning, the smell sound and sight of the sea, birds yapping, nice cup of coffee, everything is still chill before the daily rush to the beach, nice hot burek straight from the local bakery.
IndependentWrap8853@reddit
That thing they sell in Croatian bakeries is just a stuffed filo pastry and should not be allowed to be called Burek. For the real deal you have to go to Bosnia (not Hercegovina) and specifically Sarajevo and central Bosnia.
Buffalo-Actual@reddit
Bosna, easily.... but i do like serbian creativity twist with non traditional stuffing...

I THINK that Albanians are famous for their bakeries all over the world. Meaning that it's a common business they opt for and thrive in, even in different countries. So maybe they have a strong bajery tradition? I dunno.
Kenepe88@reddit
First time hearing of world renowned albanian bakeries...
RamboRamonRainer_@reddit
I live in Vienna so basically the whole Balkan is represented here. I buy my meat Burek from a bosnian bakery and my cheese burek from a bulgarian bakery. All the other ones suck.
ImamTrump@reddit
They’re nice variants tbh. Finding any works just fine. I like Albanian variety.
silentmarrow@reddit
bosnia??? is that even a question

it's not inside Balkans but this Çi Börek, brought by Tatar immigrants to the city of Eskisehir is the best burek

My yiayia’s is hands down the best, she makes filo pastry from scratch even now in her 90s. She even learned to make gluten free filo. Her filo isn’t super thin and it has some “bite” to it but it’s not thick at all. And she’s very good at the filling. My favourite is hortopita as I don’t like the cheese ones.
Willing-Actuator-509@reddit
Nothing beats Greek pitas.
Nullen-Protocol@reddit
Is the 3rd photo a bougatsa? I love Greek pastry and bougatsa, such a distinct taste
GalacticUser25@reddit
Probably, so not a burek, unless you count every single phyllo dough pastry a burek
Battlefleet_Sol@reddit
Su börek with cheese
Money_SmellsLikeLove@reddit
Best borek not even a question canim cekti amk
Accomplished_Fox8323@reddit
I’ll put my vote on the cheesy, super flaky burek from the corner bakeries in Bucharest — greasy in the best way and impossible to beat at 7am. Travel showed me lots of versions but I always go back to that one.
chrstianelson@reddit
I couldn't tell you which one is objectively the best, but the best böreks I ever ate were Malatya-style kömbe and Adana-style su börek.
So, I'm gonna say Turkey.
Left_Way1560@reddit
THAT IS BAKLAVA. IT IS GREEK
pitogyroula@reddit

Dangerously_69@reddit
Does banitsa count as burek?
mtheofilos@reddit
Yes
Dangerously_69@reddit
In that case, I've had the best burek in Bulgaria. Although I've also had the worst burek there as well.
Solid-Scarcity-236@reddit
How in the hell will you mix boza and burek? Who does that?
mrbdign@reddit
Have you tried Bulgarian boza and banitsa to react like this?
Solid-Scarcity-236@reddit
No I haven't. But I know what boza is, or maybe I don't know what boza is in Bulgaria? In Macedonia it is a sweet fermented drink frequently combined with differnt types of sweets like indijanki usually. We even have a combo of ice cream and boza, a couple of ice cream balls submerged into a big glass of boza.
Dangerously_69@reddit
bro, wot
it's a thing here
Solid-Scarcity-236@reddit
What else is a thing? A combo of a cake-yogurt?
NeroXLyf@reddit
I don’t care, I just wanna taste them all and the real answer is always the one grandma makes.
AskVarious4787@reddit
As person not from the region but visited every single country in the Balkan, the answer is Bosnia and it’s not even close. Turks invited it, but Bosnians perfected it.
ProfessionalShock425@reddit
It is not up to Balkan countries to answer that, you pizdek! You have to ask other nations that question, not Balkan people. It's becomes not a competition of burek making skill, but of fastest thumbs and spare time for reddit.
Also, whoever wins the thread, it's because their fans showed up strongest that day, not because every single person who has tried all versions agrees. Same dynamic explains why groups struggle to pick the "best" member for something unclear and fuzzy.
n1ente@reddit
We need some kind of börek festival (even a competition lmao) so we can try every one of them
Same-Ad-6523@reddit
not up for debate its the Turkish one

Kurdish borek is the best. So, it is Kurdistan.

Kenarlı Börek in Turkish Trakya:
DesperateJuana420@reddit
This might be problematic, but Greece. Their spanakopita or the feta filling is absolutely not comparable to any of the greasy bureks with meat or cheese on the rest of the balkan.

Agreed, and really on anything Balkan culinary the answer is either Greece or Turkey.
