Moving to TX / Job Hunt Advice Marketing Professional

Hi guys I’m moving from CA to TX soon, I am in my late 20s & I work in marketing. I got laid off and I’m riding off severance that’s ending soon - it’s been super hard to find a job here in CA and it’s so expensive so I plan to move this month and secure a job within two months there hopefully.
I see Dallas / Arglinton has a ton of job opportunities with less competition than CA. I’ve gotten some final round interviews but being out of state is always an awkward conversation to have especially saying I’m from CA…
I’m fairly young but I’ve always been pretty independent but I won’t lie I am a little nervous as I’ve never lived there before except the two weeks I was there exploring the city before my move. Also this huge life change.
Anyways I was hoping for some advice in my job hunt how is the job market down there? Any successful stories from someone in my similar situation?
I feel like my resume is pretty strong but I know here in CA it’s been nearly impossible especially in this economy. Any advice / stories/ big sister tips will be helpful as I navigate this move. Thank you!

I want to share my experience with you u/fruity. In what seems like another lifetime ago, I transitioned out of the Air Force and went to work in the Northeast for 2 years. I was then was laid off in an economic downturn that hit my geography pretty hard. I did what you are contemplating now. I moved to the Atlanta, Ga. area for more opportunity. It was a risk with a lot of unknowns. It worked, it launched my career in IT. I would later move again, years later to the Dallas suburbs, for an upgrade. My career has continued to grow over the years, and I have been quite successful. I will be retiring next month. No regrets.

Stay in CA cause we dont want you here
spasmkran@reddit
Yeah Texas is for seething manchildren only.
GucciSuprSaiyn@reddit
That explains why you're here then
spasmkran@reddit
grow up.
GucciSuprSaiyn@reddit
???? You insult me first then tell me to grow up? Holy pathetic.
wbd3434@reddit
Unfortunately, you're right. Texas isn't a welcoming or inviting place anymore. Used to be.
Daisy_232@reddit
I concur. It’s been the epicenter of hate recently.
wbd3434@reddit
It's being directed at the wrong groups, unfortunately.
Daisy_232@reddit
100% same ones downvoting you.
Regular_or_BQ@reddit
Texas is a cultural and geographical armpit with a lot of hubris.
GucciSuprSaiyn@reddit
You don't know Texas's history od you thought this state was ever welcoming or inviting

Why would anyone take advice from someone who can't even spell Saiyan correctly?
GucciSuprSaiyn@reddit
Probably for the same reasons they would collect rocks as a hobby. Stupidity.
ForagedFoodie@reddit
Good thing I'm not dispensing life advice!
GucciSuprSaiyn@reddit
Lmao, thanks for proving my point

Coming from someone obsessed with Lego Batman 🙄(developed by Warner Bros Games…wait for it…a California company)

I moved from Arizona to Texas with no plan and barely now I finally found a good stable job with full time hours and benefits. I actually want to move to California, but right now isn't the right time for me, at least not yet.
fruity_girl124@reddit (OP)
How long did it take you? On LinkedIn or Indeed ?
Different_Archer8879@reddit
3 years, and neither. Just the company websites.

I own a marketing/creative agency that serves tech and retail clients and I have to be honest, the hiring market here is not great, but that's just because the marketing business is not great anywhere with companies diverting funds to AI as well as the upheaval that AI has brought to the creative and marketing process itself. Hit me up if you have any specific questions and I'll try to help.

I strongly suggest you understand the politics of Texas before moving here, especially from California. It’s easy to believe one place is not much different from another, but that’s not Texas, and it can be uncomfortable depending on your leanings.

Welcome to Texas! Some people can be so rude/weird about transplants, especially from cali, but ignore them. In terms of professionalism in interviews, do you have to mention you'll be relocating from cali? You could fib and say you're moving to Texas for family, which implies you "belong" here.
Tribalism should not prevent you from getting a job but unfortunately all types of people are on the hiring side of things, you never know.
Hope everything works out for you

I'm all for adventure but I wouldn't recommend moving here until you find that job. It's very, very easy to end up on the wrong side of the metroplex if you don't know where you need to be. Then you'll be stuck in traffic for 4 hours every day and hating life.

I would consider substitute teaching in the meantime to get some income flowing while you search for a full time job!
Regular_or_BQ@reddit
At $70 a day? Whew, you got some patience!
ceerrusca@reddit
Just trying to help! :)

You will find that it's not that much cheaper to live here. No income tax, but they will get it out of us one way or the other, through toll roads, retail taxes, property tax that is rolled into your rent by the landlords, etc.
hango-mango@reddit
Keep interviewing and tell them you’re moving here on X date so you can secure something. I was laid off and took me 10 months to find a job. Good luck OP.

Another transplant?
Stay in California dude, the weather is better and the politics are probably more aligned with your views.

Yes there are marketing jobs here. Compared to the rest of the country they are fairly abundant. But it's a tough market out there for every job and the entry-level stuff I'm seeing doesn't look good.
I was in your exact shoes 11 years ago, except coming from NYC instead of Cali.
Ineedfunding007@reddit
It's also brutal here. Good luck

I don't work in the marketing field, so can't say how hiring is for that area. Not sure what other advice you are looking for. There are new apartments being built in every surrounding city, so finding housing shouldn't be an issue.

I moved from ca to Dallas three years ago. Texas job market is hiring but it’s not as much as you think. I have friends getting laid off weekly. But I digress and still think that it is better than California.
