great photo, and i'm confident that's not an overpresure round
you usually (not always, but usually) see three things - primer deformation, abrasion marks on the case wall, and extractor marks on the rim
primer deformation is usually in the form of a 'flat' primer, which is caused by the pressure forcing the primer against the breech face, causing it to expand and, well, get flat. sometimes you'll see 'cratering' too, which is when the primer cup metal gets forced into the firing pin hole around the firing pin
overpressure rounds almost always stick in the chamber too - the first sign is hard extraction, it's hard even open the action. when it does come out, you'll see abrasions on the case body as it is pulled free, and usually a nice divot in the rim where the extractor has to yank on it
none of these signs are 100%, but seeing none of them strongly suggests it was something else
i think your gun either has excessive headspace, or (if its a semiauto) it was slightly out of battery when it fired
Thanks for the reply. You'll have to forgive me, I'm unfamiliar with a lot of this outside of pull the trigger and it goes bang, but I'm trying to better understand.
The case did stick in the chamber. I had to push it out from the muzzle end with a cleaning rod. I don't see any extractor marks, nor do I feel anything abnormal along the case body outside of the split area.
Curious how or why this would crop up now...I've fired roughly 300 rounds through it without issue using this same ammo.
As an aside, I contacted Savage and they want me to ship it back for inspection, which is good news. It's still under warranty; expires in 9 days, so the timing could have been worse.
they will know; like i said, im really not an expert
you might find some of these links interesting, just for background knowledge. it's a big topic among handloaders but usually not a big deal for folks who only fire factory ammo:
Very impressed with your knowledge, thank you for providing this. I showed to a reloader/amateur gun builder at my office and he's thinking it's more the round, but i'm confident you're onto something and still think great advice to have Savage look.
It’s fairly simple… there are different gauges for each caliber for your chamber… go, no-go, and field… you should research the difference as I haven’t done it myself, and don’t want to give you wrong information…
There is also a gauge that you stick the round in to make sure it is seated in the casing correctly
The rifle is less than a year old and I probably have less than 300 rds through it. I've contacted the manuf to see what they'll do to handle it before I try to do any of my own t/s, but if they balk or give me any other issues, I'll just pick up the gauges myself and take to a local gunsmith if absolutely necessary.
Shouldn't be an issue though, I hear Savage is pretty good with this type of thing.
Oh I’d be in contact with the manufacturer and let them know. They should be responsible and cover the cost of sending the gun back to the manufacture for inspection.
Could not agree more with this comment OP. Everything may look fine to the eye but until you actually check it with proper gauges you’re taking a risk pulling the trigger again.
I was bleeding pretty good when it happened. Figured I'd have a black eye for sure, scope hit me in my eyebrow. It's not even that fucking close; i.e., proper relief, but i got punched, fucking hard.
I've pulled a 400 rd batch before after realizing the way I was running my press I might have accidentally double charged a round or two (.45 ACP w/Titegroup). I just got a collet puller and went to work on it. Better safe than sorry.
Good to know - I'm not very well versed when it comes to that, I think was making some assumptions. Checking with the manuf first to see what they'll do, if anything, but headspace checks come next no matter what.
I’d be sure to take pictures and email a report to the manufacturer, on this sub I’ve heard about a lot of ppl getting like 200 free bullets after mishaps like this. Stay safe fam.
The first time I shot a reload out of a 629... I was just waiting to have my arm blown off. By number six I made a happy face at 15yds. I still have that target 30 years later. Saw Lethal Weapon too many times I guess.😂

im not convinced that's an overpressure round. it might be, but the it also might be a headspace problem
can we get a clear shot of the primer?

Does this help? Doesn't look different from others I've shot - and I've fired several from this manuf.

So how’s the gun?
yuckypants@reddit (OP)
Separate post - i bent the extractor spring, but beyond that, seems to be ok.

Damn, got lucky OP. Glad you’re okay.
yuckypants@reddit (OP)
Thanks. Agree - this was very unexpected, and FWIW, would have most definitely been catastrophic in an AR10, so glad it was in a bolt rifle.
Hettyc_Tracyn@reddit
Probably good to check your rifle’s headspacing, just to make sure nothing got screwed up…
(Also it is good practice to check the headspacing of rifle rounds, just to be safe)
yuckypants@reddit (OP)
I have never done this but will research and figure it out.

Was this factory ammo or hand loads?
yuckypants@reddit (OP)
Factory ammo. I shoudl have specified.

I've already contacted Savage and Rock Island (Armscor), and Savage already asked for me to mail it back. Just working out specifics now.
Hettyc_Tracyn@reddit
Fair enough, if it’s under warranty then definitely do that first (assuming it covers bad ammo)
yuckypants@reddit (OP)
Thanks, I will do this. I appreciate it, sincerely.

Damn happy ur ok hope the gun is too that’s sketchy af though. I just got handguns rn so I can’t relate to the scope but I Bet that really sucks.
yuckypants@reddit (OP)
Thanks, I'm a little afraid of firing from that batch. I've used those rounds before though, so this is def a one off - and my first one, too.
I just hope that when it's time to go out again, i've forgotten what's occurred.

Yeah, not a reload, poss double charge from the factory.
Going to contact the manuf tomorrow, thank you.
1Crusty_Old_Man@reddit
You can't fit a double charge of rifle powder into almost all bottleneck rifle cartridges.
Typical fill rates are 85% and up.
