What have owners of older gpus been doing for an upgrade?
Posted by coldcathodes@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 386 comments
First off, when i say older gpus, I'm talking stuff like 2080 ti, 3060 ti, 3070, 3080, 3090.
If you guys have upgraded, what did you upgrade to and why?
If you haven't upgraded, what's the reason you haven't?
Personally i haven't upgraded from my 3080 ti because there's nothing affordable that has a sizeable increase in performance. 4080 super was only about 35% faster and the 4090 even at the original msrp was too expensive. 5080 is only 50% faster and crazy expensive, 5090, do we even need ask?
gegry123@reddit
Lol a couple weeks ago I upgraded from a 1080 to a 5080
Fletchforce@reddit
2070 super to RX7800XT. Massive difference and a good chunk cheaper than the Nvidia equivalent...
overallsatisfaction@reddit
I'm riding my 3080 til the wheels fall off.
Brilliant-Way-1441@reddit
3080 still crushes 1440p at high settings, no reason to drop 800 bucks for a 15-20% bump.
LukesFather@reddit
Agreed. I have a 3080 with an i9 and 32gb of RAM, and have yet to be disappointed at either 4k or 3440.
MizaelTG@reddit
And with dlss mod you can get the few fps upscaling free.
munzter@reddit
Same. Still very happy with the performance of my 3080, Ryzen 5600X, 32 GB ram, and 1 TB SSD setup.
dastardlygent1@reddit
Exact same build myself. Riding it for at least a year or two.
Background-Wind-5466@reddit
same but 16GBs of RAM and a 1660 SUPER, runs like a dream
Jayyouung@reddit
Same rig here but with 64gb RAM. Was hoping for a 5080 but the prices are insane. Hoping that AMD releases the 5800x again as rumoured. If it’s priced right that’ll improve my frames a bit. Desperate to play 4k on my LG OLED but the 3080 just can’t quite handle it anymore - 1440p it is!
Metalcrack@reddit
Roughly the same for me. 6700xt, 5800x cpu. It works. I go 1440, reduce shadows and I'm good enough.
Money_Fish@reddit
Same setup except I went with AMD. 6900
perfringens@reddit
Identical to mine but with a 5800x3d. Hoping this setup can go on for a very long time.
jackofallcards@reddit
Realistically it’ll probably be good for new games a year or two more, and be able to play most just fine for 3-5 I’d wager. I have the same thing and think of upgrading but never do
perfringens@reddit
I had looked into buying myself a 5080 last Xmas, but the price/performance ratio was not worth it, and now I doubt the 6080 will be under 2k msrp whenever it launches.
Iam_just-me2@reddit
Amico, probabilmente farò il tuo stesso setup ma 5 anni dopo(budget gamer)
wilsonsmilk@reddit
Holy shit we have the same specs. Thought about upgrading but in the end decided not to. Been busy with work and been playing not heavy games atm anyway. Will use this rig until the wheels fall off.
kemalpasha@reddit
Same just 3070
Conpen@reddit
Mine died this year and I'm pissed off, it wasn't even middle-aged as far as I was concerned.
Super weird failure too. It wouldn't reboot if I restarted or updated windows.
AggressiveToaster@reddit
My 3080 is still really great unless it runs out of VRAM which is less on the card itself and more on unoptimized slop games. Some of these new releases have ultra textures that go past the 10 gigs of VRAM and look WORSE than textures from 2016.
clichekiller@reddit
Ditto
camst_@reddit
Why’s he gotta call our gpu old
IronheadeN5@reddit
Yup same, still rocking my 1660 super
RockStar5132@reddit
Yeah I want better stuff but I’m at the point now where I want a new processor. But if I get a new processor I gotta get a new motherboard so I’m in for basically a new build at this point
mikeymike831@reddit
If you have a Microcenter near you the 3 in 1 bundles are great and you can keep everything and just upgrade the necessities for a reasonable price. Most come with 16 or 32 gb ddr5 ram and a mid range mobo and they have plenty of cpus to choose from
RockStar5132@reddit
Yeah I do have one near me and I’ve been looking at those. Just can’t afford anything like that right now is my biggest problem. The 3 in one I see right now is $700
mikeymike831@reddit
I got my son the 7800x3d and he still uses his 3060ti. The only other thing I got was a bigger SSD but that was out of kindness not necessity. I wish you the best in your search, there are deals out there to be had, just be vigilant.
Money_Fish@reddit
I went with a 6900 over the 3080 and I'm with you. Since I'm pretty good at electronics repair I'll probably stick the wheels back on.

I feel the same way.I have the gigabyte Aorus master 3080 w/LCD screen. Running a 32-in curved 1440p 144 HZ monitor works good enough for me. I almost keep thinking about updating to the 5070ti. They used to be $750 but not anymore so I'm running the 3080 for a while.
17jwong@reddit
Same here. GPUs are just too expensive now

Same. Games still look great to me and haven't had major performance issues

nyctophobiax@reddit
Last year I upgraded my 3070ti to a 5080. I and recently gotten a 4K OLED Ultrawide and wanted to experience everything + RT cranked to ultra. Was well worth it.
VampireSomething@reddit
Currently using a 2080 Super next to a Ryzen 7 9700X and 32gb of DDR5 6000 ram. My GPU is a grandpa in a gen Z party.
I'm considering going red and buying a RX 9070XT. Mostly to get a more comfortable 1440p experience and since I don't care for raytracing or framegen, I'd rather aim for raster power so VRAM is more important.
I would love to have a 7900 XTX for the same reasons, but I'm not that easy off.
Wipeout1980@reddit
I upgraded my 3080 because I just wanted something better. At the time(before easter) I only played Sc2. D3,d4 and Opent TTD. I decided to go for a 5080. Total overkill of course . I tried Crimson Desert right before easter and it was, an amazing game and amazing graphics

Im on a 2060 and genuinely still havent run into a need to upgrade yet. Works perfectly fine on pretty much everything
Zer0sAnd1nes@reddit
I had a 2070 Super and made the jump just because it was an option for me, let that card carry you till it cant that was a great generation.
CalamitousArdour@reddit
2070 Super owner here, what did you upgrade to? I'm eyeing a 9060 XT because I refuse to upgrade to another 8GB card.
shaveforwork@reddit
I went from a 2070 super to a 5070ti. 2070 super is a great card but mine was dying and I was struggling on newer games at 1440p.
I'm still using a 10700k with my 5070ti and having no issues.
JustOverPluto@reddit
9060 XT is a worthy card to upgrade to. Also just giving my quick two cents. I made the jump from 2070 Super to 5080 back in November because I wanted to game at 1440p and not worry about my card holding me back.
danielfletcher@reddit
I was surprised how well my 2060 SC handled Forza Horizon 6. Just a 1080p monitor though, but looks great.
Play mostly on my XBox Series X on a 4k TV, but instead of resubscribing to Gamepass I just hop on my PC to play the online portions since I bought it on the Microsoft store so have a license for console and PC.
neman-bs@reddit
Maybe on 1080p/60fps.
I had a 2060 and it struggled to get 120fps on some modern games at 1080p
GapStock9843@reddit
I run 1440p 60fps on pretty much everything I play
Paradoxicle_Popsicle@reddit
Can I ask: what are you playing, and at what settings? Strong upscaling? What are your 1% lows?
Because games like Dying light the Beast give me ~70 fps on ultra with RT on my 9070XT. Black Myth Wukong benchmark is under 100 fps with I think high/Ultra preset and quality upscaling.
So just curious how you're getting that framerate on such an old card. Want to know if it's just the fidelity settings or if I'm missing some other settings optimisations.
internet_safari_@reddit
Google says my RX6600 is about 15% faster, so a pretty close experience. That is my experience too. I play 1440p and target at least 75 fps (my refresh rate).
Too many people play with any of the Ultra settings on. Usually they're a marginal difference for a massive hit from High. Knowing what your hardware is good at is important. I max out anisotropic filtering with no hit but never go above 2x AA unless I'm playing below 1080p for some reason. Tbh I'm happy playing low/lowest everything and maybe a couple Mediums if I feel like it. The visual difference game to game is larger anyway.
Key_Wish_7990@reddit
I'm with you. We have one system with a 1070 and another with a 2060 Super that both run perfectly fine for our needs. We have two other systems, both with 4060's, and they're a little better, but not night-and-day better.
internet_safari_@reddit
I used an RX480 until a couple years ago and use an undervolted and underclocked RX6600 now. Rest of the system is an underclocked (by 1 whole GHz) 5700X3D and 64GB DDR4 3200. Cool and quiet and by next upgrade is removing the underclock in a couple years.
So absolutely, it depends on your standards and tasks/games, and don't upgrade for any other reason than actually needing to after you've tried just being happy with what you have. My R7 360 is still relevant to my media PC and the indie games I play on it lol
itsfourinthemornin@reddit
I'm on a 2060 still, between my general usage and the games I play I don't particularly need anything relatively new, even some more current games run fine. I'll upgrade down the line but in no rush right now.
Anatolehh@reddit
6800 XT til it dies. Still plays 1440p games on high/ultra just fine. Aging like "fine wine" as promised on release. No issues with it whatsoever.

LazyDawge@reddit
Just went from 3060 Ti to 5070. Pretty big leap considering my 5600X, but it keeps up in most situations. As for your case I don’t see much point in upgrading other than saving on power usage
ImitationGold@reddit
3060 Ti to rtx 9070XT. I was walked through my pc build in 2020 and I don’t have the spec to run Ark survival ascended comfortably on better settings so I decided to cash out and upgrade about 3ish months ago.
My initial goal was a 4080 super. Out of my budget. Then was a 5070 Ti. I was set on it but users here and a couple threads on pc building hubs said I could go for the 9070 as it’s on the same level and with the money saved I could upgrade from 16GB to 32GB ram. I did and my only grip was the driver swap and it’s less plug and play than an Nvidia driver. Only had to do the swap with DDU once but you really feel the lack of dlss but in my experience my GPU can do fine by powering through. I have a sapphire Pure OC one that’s overclocked and undervolted and aside from the rare crash from me trying to push overclock it’s been great. Runs Ark fine and all my other games fantastic.
I know next to nothing but I feel like at the price point it’s at its incredible value. I don’t see the need to upgrade for the next 5-10 years at least. The top tier GPUs are upwards of 3000$ USD and the upgrades for mine are not significant enough to justify the price.
Also on AM4 with a not great CPU as well
FranzSalvatierra@reddit
I've been using a 2080ti since it came out. It runs cyberpunk at maxed out graphics and I use it for VFX in and exports in 4k res. I had some heavy camera tracking work that it couldn't handle, so I had to step down to 2k once. I've thought about upgrading just to get faster exports but it's pretty much just a slight quality of life upgrade and not really worth it. In my build I only have an i7 processor and I think 32gbs of ddr6. So probably upgrading the processor first.
Wehunt@reddit
2070 Super til it dies. However im planning on a 5070 ti rebuild
Training_Wind_4997@reddit
I had been using a 1070 for way too long. It was still good for most games even up to 1440p. I was able to start playing bg3 on it before I upgraded my whole PC (it was a friend's old one anyway). So now I have a 5070 ti.
I was more surprised at how few issues I ran into with it considering the age it was (and that I just stopped using it last year).
I had never had a gaming specific PC before, so I didn't really know what to look for.
The last time I got deep into researching parts I didn't have the money for, they were still on quad-core chips, so I felt super out of my element seeing all the new developments
VerticalBlank@reddit
I'm running RTX 380 at 1440p and I don't see any reason to upgrade. Plus I consider the 12VHPW connector to be a serious fire risk and I won't have one in the house.
Vinral@reddit
My 3070ti is staying put until it dies. Especially with current prices.
StuartWtf@reddit
My 3080 is still a champ.
It’s the rest of the PC that needs upgraded. But in this economy?!
TheGameboy@reddit
i bought my 4060 last january, no complaints here. before that, i was using a 1060 for about a yeah, then from 2015-2024 i was using a GTX 970. I don't play the newest games, i play 1920x1200 at 60Hz. I'm not a framerate chaser, i like what i like and play games within my means. I have a massive physical game collection, so if i really want to play a new game at launch, it's probably on a console because i want to play it in my living room.
Witty_hi52u@reddit
My backup rig still has a 1080ti. That card has lasted 10 years, been repasted twice. Still runs like a champ.
My main PC will probably upgrade to a 9070 XT from a 6800 XT at some point. No chance I am paying the Nvidia tax
Own-Indication5620@reddit
U only need what u need. The main performance lift going from a 30 series to 40/50 series is with ray-tracing, DLSS 4.5+ and path-tracing performance for games. In applications u get newer generation encoder/decoder and other AI/application performance lift. If u don't need it....... keep ur 3080 TI for as long as u can.. it's still capable........
coldcathodes@reddit (OP)
Agreed. Tbh I've never used ray tracing ever in any game. Dlss 4.5 upscaling (not frame gen) would be nice though
Own-Indication5620@reddit
U can still use DLSS 4.5 on RTX 30 series for visual quality, it's just the performance gain is less than 40/50 series compared to DLSS 4 or less. Either way u can still tweak your settings as needed. RT is nice in some games but it just depends, but if it's something u never or rarely use than you can keep the 3080 TI for a while.
coldcathodes@reddit (OP)
Yeah I've tried 4.5 but if it doesn't give a performance advantage over 4, what's the point really. It looks better than 4 but has a higher performance hit. I usually just up the quality of the dlss 4 instead.
Ripe-Avocado-12@reddit
Had a 3090, was hoping the 5080 would be 60-80% better. Was disappointed it wasn't. Decided to hold off since the upgrade didn't feel worth it.
Almost a year after launch I found the 5080 below MSRP. Since the 3080ti and 3090 were close in performance like you I found that the 50% performance bump didn't feel great but it did solve my performance issues at 4k. Where I was struggling to hit 100+ fps on maxed out settings I no longer had issues.
While I wish the 5080 delivered a bigger jump, it was a bump that did solve my performance problems. With the "super" refresh seemingly cancelled when I made my decision, I am happy with the upgrade even if I still wish I got more performance for my dollar.
0pyrophosphate0@reddit
I just upgraded my old 6800 to a 9070 (non-XT). I wouldn't say I was excited about it for the price, but I would say 50% more performance with lower power usage and noise just cleared the threshold for me to pull the trigger.

Visual_Moment5174@reddit
I had a 3070ti and was unhappy with the performance. Wife got me a 4070 ti super for Xmas last year. Not a bad card. Imo a little under powered.
My 14900kf is my only set back at this point. It sucks down so much power and compared to amd's latest 9000 series x3d chips I could be pulling way more frames than I am currently with way less wattage.
3070ti is still a great card for 1440p gaming with low to moderate ray tracing depending on the title. Most of the time I left it off for performance reasons.
PigSlam@reddit
I replaced my 3070 with an RX 9070, which I then replaced with a Pro AI R9700 because I’m doing AI stuff with it and not really gaming any more. The 3070 and 9070 are still in use for AI stuff, just in different systems.

Have five builds with 7900xtx, b580, 4060, 6900xth, 6800xt. Have sold off 1080ti, 2080ti, 3060, 3060ti builds in the past few years.
Avoiding that cursed 12pin connector keeps me away from many cards. Honestly at 1440 the 3090 does great with some balanced settings.
So far as upgrade considerations.....lossless scaling is more interesting to me than spending on a gpu anytime soon.
Boring-Ad-5822@reddit
Went from 3070 to 5070ti, no other reason than a VRAM increase. Upgrades are useless if you are still having fun with your current setup. Don’t upgrade based on others opinions and just because you have the money. Ask yourself are you having fun or are you happy?
Zatchillac@reddit
Was gonna keep running my 2080ti for a couple more years but when I saw everything keep increasing in price I went ahead and bought a 5080 when I got my tax return money, assuming prices were just going to keep going up. I couldn't get any output from the new card after trying everything possible and then I thought "maybe a new platform might fix it?" so I bought a 9800x3D and RAM (😑) and it still didn't work so I exchanged the DOA GPU for a new one and it fired right up. I kinda wish I would've just exchanged the card before buying a whole new CPU and everything but at the same time I'm glad I did. Hoping to get at least 7 years out of this setup

I’m on a 3070, was waiting for 60 series but may get either a 5070ti or a used 5070 if they ever drop in price.
I find that there’s always a way of running the games I want on the 3070, and I expect that to continue happening until the ps6 comes out. That will be the death sentence for that card.
What has been saving me is a mix of dlss 4 and the ability to reduce textures. But I have no theoretical problem in running a game at 720p and just using fxaa instead of TAA. But I really have not needed that, so far every game can run at 1440p with dlss performance or balanced.
pkinetics@reddit
Regarding waiting for the price drop, do you mean on the used market?
If you meant new, Nvidia has gotten really tight with their end of production. They end manufacturing of the to be retired GPU chips long before they launch the new GPU.
The AIB partners have already paid NVIDIA a very high price for the GPU chips so they aren't going to discount much.
They also know the scalpers will buy up all the new cards so there is another reason they don't need to discount their old video cards.
dsanen@reddit
Yeah I was waiting for the 5070 to hit 250 on the used market whenever the 60 series released. I don’t know however if it is worthwhile if I can get a 5070ti close to msrp.
I am skipping the 5070 at msrp. But I am more interested in the 5070ti, specially seeing how 8gb have held up with dlss 4 and 4.5, even if the recommendation is not to run it on the 30 series, I test it game to game and sometimes it eliminates tons of ghosting that would come up with dlss 4.
My waiting for the 5070 to age poorly and be cheap, is just that it would be a great budget buy, I don’t mind not playing on the highest settings. But I don’t see this happening anytime soon.
2002ChipotlePC@reddit
I’ve been rocking my 3080 for a few years now. Recently I wanted better performance and 1% lows in certain titles, so I upgraded from a Ryzen 7 5800x to a 9850x3D, swapped out the motherboard so it was compatible, and bought new DDR5 ram. Altogether it was a huge chunk of change, comparable to a new GPU, but it was so incredibly worth it.

How much of a performance increase is there from a 3060ti to 5070? I‘m wondering wether I shoud upgrade too
Beanstiller@reddit
I’m on 1440p so my 3060ti fe was showing some age with new games on high. While I don’t have numbers, I’m consistently on high/ultra with rt on. Don’t sleep on frame gen though - that alone has been a godsend. Especially if you’d rather have smooth gameplay. I basically keep it enabled on any game that supports it and I’m constantly at 150-200 frames.

lbkid@reddit
Idk if it was just my card or 3060ti's in general would have this issue, but i was getting roughly 60 FPS on low graphics settings while playing CoD.
Now on the 5070ti I'm getting generally 100-120 FPS with graphics settings set pretty damn high.
And most other games I'll just max out the graphics and they'll all run extremely well.

1070 crew! I just keep cleaning and re-pasting every other year, and it keeps working. I mostly play older games and turn-based games. Even at 2k it still gives me plenty of fps for my needs. I'll likely run it until it dies. It is absolutely the bottleneck with a 13700k.

Well you could find a 4070 somewhere in the 250-400 range and you’d be golden.

Upgraded from my 2060 Super to a 5070 last fall. Quite content with it. Reason for it was wanting higher settings w/ higher frames and not having to pick one over the other. I'm on 1080p ultrawide currently and the 5070 kills it.

You call 30 series old?
I upgraded from vega 56 just last year...
I went to 9070xt because it was 200-300 euros cheaper at launch than 5070ti where i live. So it was best card card within my budget sub 800€
Why i upgraded? Because my vega 56 died at respectaple age of 7 years. So yeah i would still be rocking vega if was still working and not became fancy paperweight (it was still perfectly capable at 1080p, tho after gpu upgrade i got chance to move to higher resolutions)

I have a 3090. It's been 5 or 6 years since my last upgrade. Normally I do build a new every 5 years-ish. But, I just can't justify doing it right now, since my system still runs fine, and parts are just to overpriced.
actstunt@reddit
I had little literacy on how to build a pc so when I had enough money back in 2014 I copied one comment from a guy here and went to the store and asked the guy to build it for me, it was a local store, and I got an i5 / 970 gtx build that worked wonders for almost 10 years lol, the gpu was still working but obviously was not enough for new games.
Then I started researching on here an other similar subs and finally upgraded to am4, got a used mobo, some ram, went from i5 to a 5700x3d and got a cheap rx 6600 xt card, which worked well but my final upgrade was changing to a 4070 super.
Now I'm planning on rebuild my whole set up with whatever series 6 comes up and the newest components, but also money is not an issue right now, the issue is i dont have time to play as much lol-

RickJamesBoitch@reddit
Haven't upgraded from my 3070, because I paid scalper pricing, it still works fine at 1440p and because current prices of cards are too high. I will only buy a new card when I can double frame rates for $500 or less. The 9070XT is getting close but typically $600+. I'll probably buy a current card when next gen cards are released from AMD or NVDA.
praemialaudi@reddit
I went from a 3070 to a 5070. Generally, that’s been a happy upgrade for me. It’s allowed me to turn on heavier Ray Tracing features and push up my 1440p frame rates . That said for people who are more in the 80 or 90 series space, upgrading right now just costs too much.

My 3090 is still rocking it. The 5090 would be a worthy upgrade, based on the specs, but the pricing has been the only inhibitor. I’m not playing as many AAA titles, getting into some nostalgic gaming, and, with that in mind, I decided to upgrade my monitors instead of a full rebuild. But I’m itching for an upgrade - trying to wait for the “6090” whenever that releases. (I know nvidia stated they’re pulling back on their gaming gpu business. Simply hoping for different news on the next year).

I upgraded because of my CPU mostly, and the inability to play games smoothly. I was playing most of the games at lowest settings possible. Due to the poor optimization of the games today, sometimes even low settings weren't enough for 60fps.
9700K was at 100% constantly, in all modern games. 2070 Super still had some power to it, but its 8GB VRAM was also a problem.
I upgraded to 9850X3D and 5080.

Nothing. My 2080 works fine, the game I want to play, play fine, at the resolution I want and details I want. Maybe on some heavy games you need to get down some value, but nothing impossibile.

I'm rocking my rx5700 from 2020. I can play games at 4k with a modest 30-60fps on high settings so I don't currently have any need to upgrade. I'm not one of these people hat get super-excited about getting 1,000fps on minecraft. My monitor is 60hz so anything over 60fps is gratuitous. I've always been able to hold my own on COD at 30fps without jumping everywhere like a complete dick.
I also have a wife and daughter so I have to really think about the value of spending £300-500 on a new GPU that I don't need.
I also use my pc for work (creativity and video editing) and the 5700 is perfectly adequate for my needs. Now, if I lived at home with my mother and had no other expenses, I probably would keep upgrading as part of my hobby but I can use that money to pay off part of my mortgage and retire a bit earlier. Some people are spending the same amount on a gpu that I would spend on a car and just so they can eek out a few more fps. I think it's bonkers but it's their money and they are free to spend how they see fit.

Because I'm still fine with my GPU and by the time I upgrade who knows if I'll get the most out of a new one when this hardware is years older than it is now.
Basically depends on your standards and tasks/games. Don't upgrade for any other reason than actually needing to after you've tried just being happy with what you have. My R7 360 is still relevant to my media PC and the indie games I play on it lol

3070 still plays games at 1080 just fine. I stream that to a TV. Would I like to upgrade? Sure I guess, but my CPU and memory are much longer in the tooth and a new GPU will only help so much at this point.

I have a 1080, and the reason I haven't upgraded is that it runs all the games I play perfectly (minus raytracing, where a game supports it and my gpu doesn't).

I'm using a 2060 right now because prices are stupid, especially in Canada, and i don't want to spend like 2k on a 16gb card that's barely sufficient for my needs for the next 4-5ish years, i want to upgrade (2060 isn't a fan of 3440x1440) but the value just isn't there, i regret not buying the 7900xtx a while back for like $850 CAD but i thought i'd wait for the 50 series because surely they'd be good, right?.. hindsight is 20/20 as they say, but hey, surely the 60 series will save us? right?.. right?

I did briefly look into overclocking as my case has very good airflow but I don't really have the PSU to sustain such 330w from a 1080 ti so I voltage capped it to 800mV instead, now it's quieter and cooler and will last me even longer and still hits a solid 1.8ghz under load

was running a 3070 at 1440p for about 5 years, never really had a need to upgrade until just recently since i never really played many newer/more graphically intense games. but then i started playing helldivers 2, and its become the main game i play (something like half my free time is spent gaming), and i struggled to maintain a smooth 60 fps at medium to low settings. was debating between rx 9070, rx 9070xt, or 5070. decided to go with the 9070 because its already a big purchase and i wanted to spend as little as possible for the performance boost, and i didnt want to risk dealing with the 12vhpwr of the 5070. somewhat significant upgrade, and im very happy with my purchase.

Razathorn@reddit
I had a 1070ti and went to a 5060ti 16gb. I picked the 5060ti over the 70 to get the 16GB option to have more room for local ai stuff, which is more important to me than gaming at higher res or frames with the 5070.
coldcathodes@reddit (OP)
Well that upgrade makes way more sense, at least in terms of gaming. Not sure what ai stuff needs but the 10 series doesn't have dlss which didn't allow you to "stretch" your gpu.
Razathorn@reddit
I had 8GB before and not much fits in 8GB anymore. 16 is the sweet spot before the price doubles, and there are versions of most llms and anything else you want to do locally geared to 16. 24+ is where it is at if you can do it, but 80/20 rule here. In terms of what the 50 series brings that the 10 does, it's primarily cuda version. Certain things like pytorch want newer cuda. You can build with older cuda, but with the 10 series falling out of the linux nvidia driver (having to move to the open source one) the whole ai tool chain is getting... harder to do on a 10 series than a newer card. So, I get to shoot em up in games prettier and help skynet at the same time. Wooo.
coldcathodes@reddit (OP)
Sounds like support for the older stuff is fading so makes sense.
Razathorn@reddit
The open source drivers take over and the ai stuff can be ran too you just need to build it yourself. It's harder to just apt-get or pacman your way to success.

FalsifiedTruth@reddit
I upgraded from 3080Ti to a 5080.
While there are tangible gains to be had and a decent amount of performance lift being justifiable in certain games, it’s largely has been a semi-impulsive purchase.
The 50% increase in performance pales in comparison to the 100% increase in performance going from a 1080Ti to a 3080Ti. And not only that but going to the 3080Ti unlocked new possibilities that wasn’t possible with the pascal card.
As for the 5080? Well it can use new dlss models more efficiently and has frame gen, nice but disappointing generational gains in raw performance.
There’s also the fact that I’m currently hard pressed at tapping into the full power reserves of the 5080 given that my 12700k ddr4 is an unexpected bottleneck.
Ultimately I don’t regret the upgrade, but if I kept my ears out of pc YouTubers i probably wouldn’t have upgraded.
I don’t care about gta6 and the rate of which I play new games as they get released has dramatically slowed down compared to when I was still in school. I just don’t have that much free time and largely care to spend that in nostalgic games - something the 3080Ti is far more than powerful enough to do so.
zer0_234@reddit
I’ve got a 3070 cuz it’s still pumps out 120 fps on ultra at 1080p with dlss for every AAA game I’ve played. I don’t have any reason to upgrade because it still does what I want it to do and more. I don’t plan on upgrading for years, unless I go to 1440p, then I will upgrade.
ExperimentalFruit@reddit
I have 3070 and like you said it handles 1080p easily. 1440p it’s starting to show its age.

My 5800X has held up well considering age and not being an X3D. That's at 3440x1440/4K though I far prefer and use the former (with 6800XT then 7900XTX) I wouldn't usually go for a GPU upgrade over consecutive gens but the 6800XT replaced a 3070 elsewhere as a two birds, one stone deal.

I have a 2070 super. It still runs games great. I over clocked for the first time the other day,in years. I was able to max out my 144 hz 2k monitor. I have trouble with a couple games. All the multiplayer games I play. I have no problem hitting 144 frames.i really don't need more than that.
My last monitor was 300hz. If was getting 500 fps on overwatch I didn't really have that much of an advantage. At least I didn't play any better. There are some single player games that can give me trouble but I don't mind playing those games at like 60, which I can easily.
It still runs without issue. I really should take it apart and redo the paste and stickers. But with my setup I never let it get temps over 62 degrees. That maybe happened once after a fresh install and forgot install MSI afterburner. The problem is they are notoriously hard to take apart.
I'm gonna rock this for awhile and then I just want to get something with at least 16gb vram. I have 12 which I thank god for. But I want more.

Switched to a refurbished 3070 for $200 only because some games took a long time to load because of limited pci-e bandwidth.
If I want better performance I need to spend at least $400 to even get 50% improvement. Not worth it.

I was on a 3070 at 1440p and then decided I wanted to give ultrawide a try so I ended up snagging a 7900xtx on release.
Still going strong and with FSR 4 finally on the way I don't see myself needing another upgrade anytime soon.

Yeah I'm glad fsr4 is coming for those older amd cards. I actually made an older post discussing it but i suspect it made a lot of people lose faith in AMD.

I upgraded from a 3060 ti to a 9060 XT and switched to Linux at the same time. I didn’t feel the need to upgrade but thought it might be a better experience. So far so good! I don’t notice any difference. I’m never going back to Windows. (Except at work lol)

No upgrade, don’t need one.

1080ti just upgraded to a 5070, it’s been great. Was sad to retire the old beast
