Hello I am building my first pc and I need help picking a cpu. What is the best for gaming MSI Z890 Motherboard?
Im looking for something in the 200 to 300 range.
gurcol@reddit
I know nothing about pcs and im trying to get a good pc for around 600-700 cad please tell me things i can get
Windforest818@reddit
I have a used PC I've fully upgraded from, its extremely old. i7 7700, 16gb ram, 1070, 256ssd and 1tb hdd. Working well no issues. What would be a reasonable price to list on fb marketplace? Sell for 200, list for 300 (let people lowball me down?)
S4mantha0@reddit
What is a good 2880 nvme m.2 ssd to put in an older gaming laptop? i dont need anything fancy, just something 1 tb.
uncleslime69@reddit
So Im looking to upgrade my 3070 ti to a 5070 ti or 9070 xt for better VR gaming and will have to upgrade my 5600x since it will bottleneck it in most scenarios, but I don’t want to upgrade to AM5 because ram prices are abhorrent rn. In a perfect world I would want the 5700x3d or 5800x3d, but their prices are super inflated right now.
What’s a good alternative that will give me similar performance with a 5070 ti on AM4?
TemptedTemplar@reddit
The 5800X3D actually just got a 10th anniversary re-release, so it's going to be considerably easier to find in stock compared to a 5700 model. Though it is a wee-bit expensive at its $349 msrp, I'd bet it goes on sale pretty soon.
It is specifically being marketed towards people like you, as it would be cheaper than a full upgrade to a new platform.
As for the GPU, they're going to perform within ~5% of each other but the 5070ti uses less power to do so. Personally I'd just get the cheaper option, Amazon has been dolling out regional coupons on 9070xt's so they've been as low as $580, meanwhile the 5070ti keeps climbing in price and is struggling to come back under $800.
I'd hangout in /r/buildapcsales and see what you can find.

Sick, ty for the info!

So there's this game that eats 12.5GB vram in 1440p medium/high settings 60fps. I wanted a 8gb card but quickly realized that wont be enough, should I get a 5070 12GB or 5060Ti 16GB? Im leaning towards the 5060Ti cuz lower power=lower fan speed, lower power=lower coil whine and it has 8pin instead of 12v-2x6. Please no buy AMD recommendations.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
The 5060ti or 9060xt are your only budget 16gb options.
The 5070 does provide more performance, and it's possible that DLSS might be able to reduce the raw VRAM requirements you're seeing. But it's also a crazy price increase for ~15% more frames.
The 9070 and 9070xt are better value options, but since you don't even want to bother; then the 5060ti is the only active option.
Unless you can find a something like a used 4080 or 4070ti. Those have popped up around that $500 on the used market within the last few months.
mkdew@reddit
Thanks, used market here is very dry.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
It's been drying up since January of last year when AMD and Nvidia killed their existing product lines before announcing and launching their new ones to basically no stock. It never received from that draught, and now we have AI jacking up the prices on all of the new stuff.
It all sucks.
mkdew@reddit
Yea, prices started to go up for 4000 series in October, barely stock in December, then launch February with barely any cards. I managed to snag a 5070ti in summer, but looking to get a 5060ti 16gb for the testbench/backup.
Simple-Ad-8613@reddit
Is ssd sn7100 2tb for 165€ good deal?
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Yes.
They're currently $300 USD at most retailers right now. (~258€)

Currently got a 5700X3D / Asrock B550 Phantom Gaming 4 / 2x16GB 3600MHz CL18.
A year ago I upgraded my GPU to a 5080, and in about a month I'm planning to finally make the jump to AM5.
The idea is to get 9800X3D + Gigabyte B850 Aorus Elite Wifi7 + 2x 16GB Patriot Viper 6000MHz CL30.
Does that motherboard sound like a good option? I looked at the MSI B850 Tomahawk but it was like $40 more expensive for no real benefit?
I also wanted to update my 2 old NVME, a Patriot Viper VPN110 500GB that I use for the OS, and an old XPG Gammix S11 Pro 1TB that Ive been using for games since 2019, its already 7 years old. Probably with a 1TB and 2TB. What would you recommend as replacements? I'm not in a tight budget but I also don't want to overspend for 1% more performance.
Ockvil@reddit
Is there a reason you're swapping to AM5? A 5700x3d is still a powerful CPU, and should be plenty even for a 5080. And DDR5 is expensive right now, especially when you already have DDR4 that works perfectly well.
If not, I'd wait to see if the next AM5 generation is a big improvement from the 9000 series, or maybe even until AM6.
AShamAndALie@reddit
The idea was to wait until AM6 to buy the very last AM5 X3D CPU but since I'll be getting some extra cash next month that I didn't count on, and I have never seen my 5080 touch 100% load with my CPU even with Path Tracing, I don't think it would be a waste of money. There's also all those stutters where I'm thinking "Was that my CPU or the freakin UE5 engine?" haha
AMD confirmed extended support for AM5 until 2029, I'll already have a good mobo and RAM, and I can upgrade just the CPU to the very last AM5 beast when AM6 releases. True, RAM are expensive now but I honestly dont think they are going down anytime soon.

What is the best budget gpu that pairs well with a ryzen 3400 and a 650w power supply? I have £139 left to choose a used gpu and there are too many options (1080TI, 1660SUPER, 2060, RX6600...)
Ockvil@reddit
Of the ones you list, I'd go with a rx6600 assuming the prices are all the same. It's the newest of them, and only slightly behind a 1080ti (maybe 15%) but uses significantly less power.
If you want to see the (very rough) relative performance of similar GPUs, look here: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-6600.c3696 Before buying anything, it would be a good idea to try to look up benchmarks for games you plan to play, but current ones from quality sources may be hard to find.

Anybody with a Fractal Define S case has a 9070 or 5070 installed? Part of the case goes inward to fit the drives behind it and I worry that a longer card will run into it. My 2080 is 10.6 inches so it doesn't make it that far, but it looks like a tight fit if the card was longer.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Length is a huge issue with newer GPUs. Scroll down under the specs. The table below has a list of various models and their length. 10.6 inches =269mm
The 5070 has lots of models under 270mm in length
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-5070.c4218
The 9070 and 9070xt however do not. The smallest models are 280mm in length.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-9070.c4250
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-9070-xt.c4229
Are you sure you have the Define S? Fractals website says it supports up to 425mm long GPUs "without compromising HDD clearance"".
Operation_C@reddit
The drives go on the back side of the case, so the HDD size and GPU size doesn't affect each other. I thought 5070s were longer, but I actually want a 9070; my mistake. The problem is the card clearing the part of the case that comes inward to fit those drive on the back. The motherboard surface isn't flat from one side of the case to the other; it comes inward part-way through the case.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
It should be fine. Aside from the front fans taking 25mm of clearance, they don't have any other notes or exceptions listed on the cases details.
Operation_C@reddit
The length is not necessarily the problem. It's how close the gpu (the side that goes into the motherboard) is to the case that's the problem, because that part of the case comes inward.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
But it's not a problem at all according to their own website.
Is your motherboard on standoffs? Between the 1/4 inch standoff and the small clearance the GPU has over the motherboard it should be perfectly capable of clearing the bump.
I am going off of this image from the website.
Operation_C@reddit
I'm using standoffs. The website doesn't say which GPUs are compatible. They only refer to the length. My current GPU would not clear the bump unless I remove that rubber. I'm not sure if it would be laying against the metal.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Because sizes and dimensions are all standardized. All modern GPUs adhere to the same standards of PCIE brackets and width. Depth and length are the only dimensions that truly change between cards.
Its easier to list what isnt going fit, than what will.
Aleksanterinleivos@reddit
Pretty sure that surface would be on basically on level with the mobo, so there's no way it would block anything unless your GPU has some weird growth that protrudes towards that side.
Operation_C@reddit
The problem is that these GPUs are massive and my case is very old. Thus, I can't find pictures of any builds with this case and a 9070.

With the recent 5800x3D price at 350$ announced I’m considering upgrading from a Ryzen 5 3600 and 5700xt with 16gb of DDR4. There is a micro center bundle right now for a B650, 7800x3D, and 32 GBs of DDR5 for 600$. Would that be overkill compared to just upgrading to a 5800x3D? I’m not against upgrading my GPU but I feel like I can squeeze 1-2 more years out of it. I feel like the bundle would set me up to just replace the GPU then.
n7_trekkie@reddit
Go with the MC bundle. You can grab a new am5 CPU in 2029 lol
clothing_throwaway@reddit
I would like to undervolt my CPU (Ryzen 7 5800x3d and would be using PBO2 Tuner), but I heard I should run some tests at different voltage curves to figure out how low I can go before things get..."bad"? What exactly does that mean? I assume I should run some software or stress tests or something? Any tests in particular? And if I run them, what stats should I be looking at?
Protonion@reddit
CoreCycler, Prime95 Small FFT, and OCCT are all good options for testing CPU stability. Essentially you'll want to lower the voltage until you start getting errors in those tests, then raise the voltage back up a notch so the errors go away. Also note that the tests are not foolproof, even if they all pass you might still have crashes in games because different parts of different games will load the CPU differently.

Was looking at upgrading my 16GB of DDR4 memory from 2133MT/s to 3000MT/s for a cost of £46, to hopefully make my PC (i5-10500 + RTX 2070) capable enough for RT-required games like Doom The Dark Ages. Obviously a bad deal, but within the bubble of this crisis, would it be worth it?
AskingForAPallet@reddit
That won't make a dent in RT
The real performance gains in a graphically intensive game is a GPU upgrade

Hi!
What is a general opinion on ugprading my CPU from an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 X to a Ryzen 5 5600? It would be paired with a 5060 TI 8GB. Checked some Bottleneck calculations with this setup and it looked ok.
I have an AM4 motherboard so this kinda limits my options in choosing a CPU. I would be using this on 1440p mainly for gaming.
I understand this is an overall upgrade, but my real question is the general opinion on the 5600 itself? Would it be maybe worth to up my budget a little big and upgrade a motherboard + a newer CPU or the 5600 paired with a 5060 TI would serve me well?
Thanks!
No_Spare1827@reddit
Na, the 5600 is a nice breath of fresh air to that system, and would be plenty for that level of GPU
