CFI/CFII with no job offers after hundreds of applications. What now?
Posted by Suspicious-Boat9469@reddit | flying | View on Reddit | 121 comments
I got my CFI/CFII last year and graduated from a Part 141 school. Since then, I’ve applied to hundreds of flight schools all around the country and still haven’t had much luck. I keep seeing posts from people on here in the exact same situation, and honestly it makes me feel even less hopeful. At this point I’m starting to wonder what I should do next. I’ve genuinely thought about finding a different career path because I don’t want to just sit around waiting forever for something to open up. I’ve considered getting my MEI, but it’s hard to justify spending another $10k when there’s no guarantee it changes anything. Recently I’ve even started thinking about the military just so I can move forward with something. It’s been really discouraging, and I know I’m probably not the only one feeling this way. I’d really appreciate any advice, tips, or guidance from anyone who’s been through this or is going through it now. It would mean a lot.
God bless.
zkoolie@reddit
It seems like nowadays if your own flight school doesn’t hire your your shit outta luck
Avia_NZ@reddit
This is exactly it, regardless of experience. I have 1k hours and 700 instructing, and there have been no jobs for me now for nearly 2 years
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
There are no 1k hour jobs. Keep instructing. Hopefully MEI.
Avia_NZ@reddit
I’d love to but there basically ain’t no instructing jobs in my country
November202025@reddit
Flight schools already got the money. That's the most important
weech@reddit
Flight schools love doing this
Former_Farm_3618@reddit
When the market shits schools are hesitant to take “outside” CFIs in. It’s an unspoken rule if gets competitive the school will hire their own customers as CFIs before allowing others in. It kinda makes sense.
Hopefully the economic market will turn more positive and the airlines can start some real hiring again.
Not to throw matches or fan flames, but remember all this at the voting booth. Elect leaders whose views align with yours and your career. You can interpret that however.
Throwawayyacc22@reddit
Aren’t airlines doing a TON of hiring?
I thought there was just an oversupply
Ya know, supply issue, not a demand issue, similar to plane manufacturers.
PilotBurner44@reddit
Compared to historical figures, yes, the airlines are hiring tons.
Compared to the last 6 years or so, things have slowed down quite a bit. Airlines are still quite above average hiring though.
Unfortunately the pilot boom pre-covid and then post COVID bounce back has made this industry incredibly appealing with all the fast movement and massive pay raises. Because of that, there has been a massive influx of training schools and pilots, and nearly everyone on the entry level of piloting is upset when the hiring numbers drop below the crazy amounts of the past 5 or so years.
As with anyone else, and I mean anyone, this is all just my opinion, and anyone speaking "factually" about hiring and the future is just speculating like the rest of us, but wrapping it up like they actually know what they're talking about. That said, I have a sneaky suspicion we're going to see a pretty lengthy lull in hiring at the majors, which of course trickles down to the regionals and then into the flight Schools. My theory being, as retirement attrition continues to decline, international markets become more saturated, and aircraft production slows, the massive amount of pilots in the pipeline will stagnate the industry for a while. All the new flight schools, especially with all the airline owned schools, there are quite a lot of people looking for jobs, and all the smaller 91 and 135 operations will fill up with people who decide to be lifers after they don't make it to the majors, and then the only movement will be at the regionals, which will go back to 7+ year upgrade times.
Throwawayyacc22@reddit
Thx for the write up, a little depressing but I just like flying.
Could be worse, I could’ve taken debt for ratings which I won’t do, I’ll have my ratings with no debt, it’s saved already, just working thru them.
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
Kids or a woman are way more expensive than spending money on ratings. Keep it that way and you will eventually have an airline career, fly all over the world leave the toilet seat up, walk around in your boxers with your kazoo hanging out, golf, boat, ride a motorcycle whenever you want! Be happy! And be a bazillionaire!
PilotBurner44@reddit
This sounds incredibly bitter.
I'm happily married, and I get to do all the fun adventurous sports and hobbies. I have far too many. I also have a super awesome person who travels the world with me for nearly free, which makes it a whole lot of fun. Coming home to someone who cares about me is pretty sweet too. Being single in your 20s is fun and all, but I'm super glad I'm partnered up now that I'm older.
Throwawayyacc22@reddit
Having a loving wife and children certainly isn’t optimal for someone funding ratings though, unless she’s rich of course.
I’d love to have a wife, but I’d prefer to not work for the rest of my life in a factory or a mine, so I’m delaying it.
PilotBurner44@reddit
To each their own. I got my ratings fresh out of highschool/college so marriage wasn't in the works for me.
Having someone to help pay the rent though and a second car for when my shitbox broke down for the 100th time would have been nice though.
Just saying you can have a cool wife/partner and still go skydiving and motorcycle riding. The dude above sounded bitter and miserable.
Former_Farm_3618@reddit
Or, hear me out, don’t marry the crazy one your friends warned you about. There’s plenty of happy people who are married. Just don’t be dumb and ignore the obvious warning signs. 😂
Former_Farm_3618@reddit
Relative to 3 years ago it’s a breadline. Relative to November 2001 it’s a ton of hiring.
There’s some hiring, yes. But far from “a TON.” Luckily people have given up the hourly posts of ,” I can’t get hired at any airline. Will this ever pick up.”
The hiring market appears to be not great right now. Ex-Spirit pilots are probably taking up most open slots. Silver lining, there’s still some hiring and the F word hasn’t been tossed around.
Physical-Program-509@reddit
Is it fair to compare any random year of hiring over the past 30 years to the 22-24 market?
Former_Farm_3618@reddit
Absolutely when people are comparing based on feels and vibes.
Also, I was comparing the arguably best and worst years for hiring.
Physical-Program-509@reddit
Right,
If you had to answer yes or no: do you think that hiring will return to the levels seen during the best years?
Former_Farm_3618@reddit
lol.
Thats my and prob 99% of pilots answers. 3 years ago was the hiring pendulum accelerating at light speed one way.
But again, that wasn’t the overall point I was making or question I was answering.
I believe low time pilots, sub 1500, have an extremely distorted reality of hiring. They are getting a big wake up call to their new reality of how it was years past and closer to where the pendulum will settle.
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
"how it was years past" and historically forever.
Physical-Program-509@reddit
I don’t what it is: but calling this market, where thousands of pilots are getting hired, a breadline seems disingenuous
Knowing that many pilots have a distorted hiring perspective which is something we both agree on.
But You dodged the main point that hiring is actually strong and the market is oversupplied and continuing to overproduce. It feels like you are insinuating that hiring will return to post pandemic levels. It’s funny that you bring up the economic situation as a negative when the economy’s doing fairly well well right now: just wait until an actual recessionary environment kicks off
There’s tons of hiring and tons of posts like OP because that’s how many pilots are in the market: the current pilot market has a lot more negative possibilities than positive ones at the moment and people should be careful out there about the financial risks of the career
Former_Farm_3618@reddit
Unaware where the dodge is located. I’m not that flexible. I think you misread my comments.
Hiring will most likely never return to post pandemic levels.
As far as the economy…I think people are misinterpreting the stock market for economic strength. Majority of people know the stock market is irrational but they also love to point at it to show a good/bad market. Weird. If the economy is doing so well why is it shedding jobs, slowing hiring, rate hikes are now more likely, inflation is roaring again. Airlines are canceling flights due to costs; is that what a strong economy does? While airlines are hiring right now, I can’t see it continuing with all the market indicators point to a downturn.
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
Never....that was a fluke and the airlines that really screwed up by purging thier seniority lists from the top down will not repeat their mistakes. At least not those.
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
22-24 set the bar for what most new CFI'S were told their airline career was going to start out like. Then when when the new 141 student signed on the line for 150k-200k worth of debt, they sprinkled fairy dust on them and gave them a party hat and a kazoo.
MrAflac9916@reddit
Too many pilots had to think the problem was trans middle schoolers playing sports. well, you get what you vote for don’t you
nightlanding@reddit
This is a repeat from another one of these threads:
First off, for many of us around a long time this was the norm, historically a lot more people have wanted to fly airplanes than there were ever jobs for them.
Try the following: Look around at the local flying clubs that may not hire directly, but have CFI members that the other members can use. Look at the local EAA chapter, you could make friends and contacts there and fly some really cool planes. It won't be quick or easy or pay, but joining CAP may get you some time and once again contacts.
Be willing to go ANYWHERE.
How I got going in a dire market as a brand new no-dual given CFI: I recruited two of my friends to experiment on, they got free lessons in exchange for being my test subjects. (they still paid for the airplane). I walked up to a club and said I need a CFI job and I have two students already that will fly here if you hire me. It worked.
Mehere_64@reddit
Wow what a great idea. You got some experience, foot in the door, got to teach some friends, and got some hours. Granted you didn't get paid but it sure beats having to pay to rent the plane.
nightlanding@reddit
I felt good about it because we were learning together. Knowing how to fly and knowing how to teach flying are not the same.
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
Airlines don't hate it at all. They just post they will.be interviewing and get 1k overnight. We do at my airline.
hartzonfire@reddit
That is actually very clever. Go recruit students and then bring them to schools you’re applying to.
run264fun@reddit
That’s a great idea.
Although I know a few schools that are so backed up, a discovery flight is 3mo out.
If you can find a school away from a major metro area, that would be the best bet
Ok-Selection4206@reddit
UBER.....
Swimming-Ad2568@reddit
Do you have a degree? You mentioned military so pilot would be an option. We have a guy who was in the same situation as you, commissioned into a non flying job, then after a couple years was picked up to be an Air Force pilot.
He was awfully competitive for a flying slot considering he had about 300 hours, high scores, and could still fund his flying from time to time with the money he was making. Just something to consider.
His end goal is airlines and he’ll likely be going straight to legacy in 10 years as us military folks usually get to “skip” the regionals. Chances are you could POSSIBLY get there before him if you’re picked up soon, but who knows what those chances are in today’s market.
To give yourself a peace of mind, try finding out how long you’re willing and able to just wait around before making a big time decision. Good luck!
FluffyWolverine2483@reddit
My story, wanted to be a pilot since I was a boy, had a family young and never worked out. Got into law enforcement and it blessed me with the ability to make a lot of money with OT. Now I get to afford to start training and see where that takes me, I’m 45.
Every police agency in the country is doing mass hires, it’s shift work so you get 3-4 days off in a row to do your CFI work if you can get on a schedule.
Balance both until you get your 1st corporate or regional offer.
-Sirmacleod-@reddit
I don’t know exactly where you are applying but in the school I’m doing my CPL on in the course of 10 months there has been more than 20 new hires and each instructor is flying around 100h a month if not more
Suspicious-Boat9469@reddit (OP)

Pay is not that good but you could try working at a FBO. You’ll meet lots of pilots that you could probably get some hours with and maybe later down the road a job. If it’s a busy FBO you’ll get tips that could total another several hundred dollars per month
Consistent-Yak-4178@reddit
I think this is the best option if you can’t find a flying job. Right now hiring is all about knowing somebody who can get you in. An FBO job will get you acquainted with local industry folks. I’m sure if you worked a few months you could find someone who will be sympathetic to your situation.
slpater@reddit
Its not even that. Ive had several contacts into airlines and charter places. There just arent enough jobs for the amount of pilots out there looking.
Helpful_Corn-@reddit
It probably pays better than flight instructing
Perfect_Big_5907@reddit
From a retired corporate pilot . BINGO. Got my first corporate pilot job just hanging out in the FBO hangar talking to chief pilots. One day, hey you wanna go on a King Air trip ? Boss wants another pilot for an extra set of eyes. 3 years and 1000 hours later, thank you.
320sim@reddit
I worked at an FBO back when I was still a student. I would just recommend that you go in expecting nothing. I met a ton of people but it's no guarantee you're going to find something. I remember that there was a bunch of pilots that joined for this reason and never found anything. Funny enough, I actually found a job for my CFI but that was pure luck.
Only do this if you are interested in working at an FBO. If you go in as a lazy worker and harass all the pilots, you'll earn yourself a bed rep and be gone almost immediately. Do it if you think working ramp sounds fun and maybe you'll get lucky and something will come naturally.
Suspicious-Boat9469@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the tip!
CryOfTheWind@reddit
It's what my pilot friend group did. Took a few years but eventually it paid off. People got their first turbo prop and jet jobs out of connections made there.
At one point all the new hire instructors and charter pilots at that airport for a couple years came from the FBO ramp crew.
PRABHAT_CHOUBEY@reddit
Network and get your face out
Internal_Time8330@reddit
Any tips how to do this? We can’t just loiter around FBOs and wait to meet the aircraft owners at airports.. we have to work a job to make ends meet
_firmdad_@reddit
Just go independent man, you’ll be able to find at least one student
Internal_Time8330@reddit
How do we find an aircraft for this to use? I’ve approached all local training aircraft owners and the planes don’t have 100 hour inspections, plus the owners don’t want training in their beautiful Cessna
The flight schools don’t want outside instruction in their aircraft either
NevadaCFI@reddit
Build yourself a website and brand (see below), get involved with the local pilot community to get Flight Reviews, insurance checkouts, etc., find planes for sale in your area and tell the seller that you can help the buyer move their plane across the country. The works well if you are in the Mountain West and the buyer is not familiar with mountain flying.

You find something else until things improve. Go back to school, get a shit job to pay the bills, move back in with mom and dad, join the military. The possibilities are many, do what is best for your situation.
Plenty of people have been in your shoes: the early 90’s recession, post 9/11, Global Financial Crisis, or the Covid Pandemic. Stay current, don’t let your CFI lapse and be ready when things pickup.
I finished my ratings around 9/11, I got a non aviation job at a university which then opened up free tuition for a masters degree. Friends of mine took other paths, but the majority eventually ended up at the airlines.
Misterslate@reddit
An idea a friend of mine had was to ask Flight Schools if they would hire you part time as a Sim or ground instructor to get your foot in the door.
320sim@reddit
Wouldn't students just prefer to do ground and sim with their own CFI? The main position I could see would be mock checkrides but I'd expect an experienced CFI to fill that role rather than a fresh ink CFI with 0 dual given
run264fun@reddit
Check airmen have a lot of experience and a Checkride student pass rate of 80%… at least that’s the case at my school
bigbadcrusher@reddit
While my cousin was waiting for his interview, another school at the same airport hired him (in his words) just to do their discovery flights. All sorts of ways to get your foot in the door
Cold_Entrepreneur750@reddit
I decided to stop flying. Been an A&P for 10 years and tried to make flying work on the side. Even worked at a flight school after getting my CFI for well over a year and they wouldn’t let me on the schedule. Said to help with it and jumped ship to a major. Pay is good, same benefits and I’m home every night. Just doesn’t work out for all of us. ✌️

Zygomatic_Fastball@reddit
15% yield. That’s brutal. Sorry you’re caught in this.
Skynet_lives@reddit
Cause they have 15 other newly minted CFIs to look at to hire first.
Rangeexpert3@reddit
Seriously...
Well, most students dont really ask or do their due diligence.
ltcterry@reddit
2025 saw 13,000 new instructors for what’s typically about 4,000 jobs/year. 2023 and 2024 each had over 11,000, so there are a lot more new CFIs than jobs.
As student starts slow there are fewer hours per year. As the eligible pool grows the hiring airlines can be more picky, hence “1475 w/ 25 ME” is no longer competitive. So fewer vacancies are created.
Mao_Kwikowski@reddit
If you have a degree, you can apply to Guard and Reserve units directly.
Physical-Program-509@reddit
I wish there was a bot to flag this advice it’s so commonly thrown out there
Going to the military as a back up plan isn’t good advice.
In general it’s competitive and slow. Going street to UPT is the most competitive military ascensions program there is: yet it’s constantly advised to people who have given no indications that they want to be a military officer
Mao_Kwikowski@reddit
Yet people manage to do it all the time. Why not give it a shot?
Physical-Program-509@reddit
Nobody said don’t do it..
Without knowing their backgrounds, scores, letters of rec, networks, saying people are getting hired dosent prove your point at all
People are getting hired all the time for CFI/CFII yet here OP is..
Suspicious-Boat9469@reddit (OP)

This one is free, next time its 10$.
Misterslate@reddit
Walking your resume into the flight schools near you and trying to politely get the contact of a pilot/lead pilot could be a good idea.
Even just saying 'hey Mr or Mrs Lead pilot as flight school X have any advice for me even if you choose not to hire me" could help make a connection.

Not new; there hasn’t been a pilot shortage since Wilbur and Orville (one plane, 2 pilots…). Luck, networking, time all work for someone. My flight school did “hire” me after I completed my CFI ride. However, that was as an independent instructor and the year was 2002. The luck part was not on anyone’s side that year.
Ok_Art6592@reddit

kingsnake317@reddit
Its a really tough market for CFI/CFIIs right now.
My number one advice from someone in flight school management is be willing to move at the drop of a hat. We don't have many openings that aren't filled by graduates, but when we do they are often in rural areas and need to be filled within 30 days. So needs to be someone willing to move to an areas 1-2 hours outside any major city basically immediately.
Aggressive_Mud5665@reddit
I would strongly recommend looking at other jobs besides the military. As someone who was in for 6 years it has its benefits but for the majority it was a bad time with the most egotistical waste I've ever seen. You'll join hoping to get some flying just to be complicit in war crimes for Israel man
Getting another gig might be the move, but also consider moving for work. Tons of flight schools in the Midwest and such were hungry for CFIs. Im sure circumstances have changed and if you already looked outside your home state, then maybe bombing poor brown people in a far away land to get to a legacy isn't a bad call
Misterslate@reddit
Did you serve as a Pilot in the Military?
latedescent@reddit

Aggressive_Mud5665@reddit
Nah not sour man just don't agree with what our military does anymore. I support the dudes in it, I still have friends in it. But I don't think its a good place anymore. Toxic leadership and fighting forever wars is not something I'm a fan of.
Aggressive_Mud5665@reddit
No I was a Combat Engineer. Tried to get a packet to go warrant but most recruiters couldn't care less and I missed boards. Turned out to be a saving grace as I'm at a legacy carrier now. Its funny how life works out like that

Evidently not if he served 6 years.
paulyshorebreak@reddit
Until 2020, the Army only required a 6 year commitment for warrant officer pilot spots, so it's possible.

True, the Marines allowed 6 years until around 2020 but only post winging, so it’s about 8 years in service.

My heart breaks at every application I see. I get it. You’ve worked hard and you’re qualified. Good news, you’ll remain qualified 😉.
One of my first PPL students now works at the FBO as concierge/line worker and I’m gonna hire her once she gets her CFI ride. She went to Midwest Corporate but wasn’t able to get the ride.
I also have a commercial student that will go right to CFI that is a good friend that I will hire.
I have an instructor name John. He has 25k+ hrs, ATP, super chill. He says “You all don’t know what it was like when I was coming up. You’d have 10 instructors sitting around a school, just waiting. It’s up and down. Always will be.”
You’ve hit the down part, and that sucks. Work at an FBO during the day, learn to wait tables/busboy at night. Use extra money to fly and get hours. That’s how I did it in the beginning to get my instrument, sans the FBO. I was a live audio engineer/waiter while getting my hours.
Good luck to you. You’ll be alright. I always recommend some Mastodon. 🤘🏻 https://youtu.be/wz56aruweJY

If you do end up looking at the military option: Guard and Reserve are the way to go, hands down. UPT would be weird for ya though. They’ll send you to IPT at a Part 141, you’d basically get some ‘recurrency’ and then proficiency advance and head back to your UPT base. Legally they cannot make you do the PPL, Instrument, or ME check-rides again. If you got hired by a heavy/tanker unit, you’d only do T-6s then head to whatever schoolhouse. If you got hired by a fighter unit, you’d head to T-38s, then IFF, then a fighter schoolhouse.
No guarantees you’d pass any of the training.
