Autohelm1000 help

So my boat came with an older autohelm1000 previous owner said he never used it and I haven’t tried to yet. I just plugged it in and it powers up but something definitely seems wrong. No matter what button I press the arm just extends out roughly the same increment, no buttons seem to retract the arm. Anyone have any tips for running this thing and trying to trouble shoot the issues?

Looks like the board for the controls is dicked, someone looks like someone tried to solder the orange wire back on in the wrong place and all the wiring was glued to the board with silicone caulking… thinking she may be toast.

Not the wrong place per-se. It's obviously not the original place, but it seems they just bypassed the trace on the board. Dunno why they'd do that, but it shouldn't affect the operation. Something else is going on.

Yeah it’s definitely bizarre, there seems to be a bunch of corrosion where all the wires join the board. I’m not great with electronics, my guess is something is shorting out near there maybe. And someone tried to bypass to fix it.

Motor out into open water, slow the boat to about 3 kts., set a course and let it pin the helm over to calibrate. If it hasn't figured it out in 3 or 4 360s of the boat it's roached.

Set it up on a table, put power to it and push the "Auto" button. Then slowly turn the unit to the right or left and see if it responds. if it begins to respond, start slowly turning it back, and see if it stops when you reach the original position. Get a manual and learn about it's tiny little brain. It's not brilliant, but it's smarter than it looks.

Oh yea, definitely possible. it wasn’t exactly a selling feature I didn’t even know he had it until we were loading stuff after I bought the boat. I assumed there was something wrong if he never used it but would certainly be aware nice bonus if I could somehow troubleshoot the problem and fix it.
