The ending of this video is wild
RangerSad3081@reddit
Wouldn’t the blades basically disintegrate if they tapped the water? Some mild unexpected turbulence/sheer and you’re so fucked
laxintx@reddit
Helicopter got pants-shittingly close to the water.
tudalex@reddit
That is why the pilot was not wearing pants
RangerSad3081@reddit
Big toe
Ecstatic_Account_744@reddit
SuperSilva, is that you?
rocket_randall@reddit
Can't be, the helo was never inverted
Saikamur@reddit
This one was probably a bit over the top for showing, but AFAIK, flying damn low is pretty common when chasing narco boats in the Strait (I don't know if it is really necessary, though). Surprisingly enough, IIRC, only once has a helicopter ever crashed in these chases, about 30 years ago.
NeitherEntry6125@reddit
I don't get it. Why would this be a good strategy?
How is the helicopter going to stop a boat by flying low?
Gryphontech@reddit
Yeah that chopper almost ate shit
wolftick@reddit
The first few seconds was probably the closest. That nose up didn't look very controlled and if the tail properly enters the water it's game over.
FeeHot5876@reddit
Rotor blade touched the water
GMAN7007@reddit
No way, The blade would have blown apart immediately. It would be like the blade hitting concrete.
OldheadBoomer@reddit
Not the rotor, but it does look like the lower tail guard touched the water in the first few seconds of the video.
bustervich@reddit
Angle of incidence, pitch of the blade, and the side of the rotor disk that hits the water matters a lot. I know people who have run rotors into trees, buildings, and wires (not all at the same time) that kept flying.
GMAN7007@reddit
It's more likely to break than not in this situation. The blade should be only hitting air its designed for that.
bustervich@reddit
>The blade should be only hitting air it’s designed for that.
Gee the fun police are here /s
astroamy24@reddit
If any spinning blade touched the water, there would be no more helicoptor. I think you meant the tail boom, and even then maybe it skimmed it. In any case yeah very reckless flying for no reason.
Equivalent_Sink_8653@reddit
In slo-mo, to me at least, looked like a tail strike right at the beginning.
ubergic@reddit
I learned a new, useful adjective today.
steel_city89@reddit

Lastima que en la vida real eso no pasaría nunca....
Xorondras@reddit
What do you mean the ending?
Conscious_Cicada9597@reddit
Pretty stupid to put that heli at risk so the pilot could fuck around. The pilot and the person who ok’d this should be fired.
right_closed_traffic@reddit
The craziest part about all of this is that it wasn’t even impressive. I mean what was the point
HPPD2@reddit
this seem needlessly reckless
Effective_Word1308@reddit
I agree. No need to fly like that and literally be on top of the target. Stand off a bit, provide areal reconnaissance and fire support if required, but trying to show you can keep up with the boat is needlessly reckless, vulnerable, and will change the entire initiative of the mission if they crash into the water and now the boat units have turned into a rescue mission.
Mygoldeneggs@reddit
You know the sad part? That this is somewhat the standard procedure. In Spain we have Morocco a few miles away, they use this superfast boats to import drugs and Spanish police go after them in helicopters. They try to harrass the speedboat to stop but... they are not allowed to shoot them. So very often this crazy fast chases appear when one shot to the motor will suffice, with the helicopter close to the boat waiting for another Spanish police boat to arrive and catch them.
The drug dealers have a chance to scape because they can go through Gibraltar (UK) waters (that Spain does not recognize but they usually would try to avoid an international issue and drop the chase) or run back to Morocco.
This is very stupid and very dangerous. And not only this demo, but what they are obligated to do daily. Some cops died some months ago being rammed by one speedboat and some backlash happened but nothing else. The police there is underfunded, underprepared (the drug dealers usually have faster boats and the ones up to speed from the police are usually captured from them and converted for police use) and no left or right goverment wants to tackle it.
verynotfun@reddit
They can't open fire unless they're fired upon first. Drug traffickers speed past them in their boats and even kill them. Thanks to Minister Marlaska.
wizer1212@reddit
Agree
This_Elk_1460@reddit
Hey I'll have you know this city had to close three homeless shelters to afford these boats and helicopters! They deserve to get their money's worth out of them /s
MrNoir79@reddit
I thought they were going in the water on the first turn.

Reckless maybe.. needlessly? Nah that's badass 😎
Tosh_00@reddit
This shit is so dumb, what could go wrong with so many people around right ?
Lucky_Yam6126@reddit
Aren’t most air shows in general? A flying aircraft is flying, wow woah wee wow
samgarita@reddit
Needless? Yes. Reckless? Maybe yeah. But needlessly reckless? Definitely yeah.

Look reckless and make the mechanics cry with all the saltwater?
fuzzyfoozand@reddit
This reddit is like the anti-Tex Johnston. Don't go to an airshow guys. You might see the blue angels fly unnecessarily close or people walking on wings just to show off.
cofonseca@reddit
We’ve had a ton of deadly air show accidents in recent years so I think the comments are completely justified.
Excellent-Gur-8547@reddit
Well no, Tex did things that looked risky, but were well-researched and well-planned to not actually be.
This is just genuinely bad airmanship.

This_Elk_1460@reddit
Anyone got a news report on what the fuck was going on at the end there
Splitzer_sdk@reddit
The ending is wild? No… the beginning is wild. Helicopter almost stuffs it in the drink in the first five seconds. I would be surprised if this video does not require the pilot to do a little carpet dancing for their superiors.
daerath@reddit
Or just hover and use less fuel. Also, you can't really be effectively shot at if you're 500 feet up as opposed to being so close they can touch you.
agha0013@reddit
Demoing how to almost lose a helicopter? That got a wee bit too close to the water
SovietAnthem@reddit
How to almost lose a helicopter and subsequently, the heads and limbs of like 30 bystanders
ContextOk4751@reddit
this has nothing to do with “demo”. its a circulating video and every one has a new title like “drug trafficers arrested by spanish police.” its reddit karma farming slop posts
notmonicagellar1@reddit
You beat me to it. I said out loud as I watched it “are they demonstrating how to crash a helicopter?!”
SantiagoGT@reddit
Contrary to popular beliefs helicopters really like water! /s
Effective_Word1308@reddit
Yea, that was almost an accident and I think the pilot knew it too as he chilled out for a bit after that skid and tail hit the water. I honesty despise "show off" aviation stunts.
xlachiex@reddit
Pretty sure it hits the water early on in the video 👀
SkyscraperNC@reddit
It looked like the tail straight slammed the water, but I didn’t see a splash or anything, so I don’t really know
ProcessEmergency2729@reddit
Incredibly close to being a helicopter crash demo
echo4thirty@reddit
For a moment there I thought Alex Choi got a new gig.
Gaspuch62@reddit
It's a bit reckless, but I'm impressed by Airbus helicopters now.
scoutstorm@reddit
That ending is just as wild as the start how tf no one mention that? 🤣 watching a heli bout destroy itself then see the ending of an action crime movie where homeboy and slick finally have nowhere else to run 😭
xmas7077@reddit
Why isn’t the water being disturbed by the helicopter? AI
Maximum-Security5699@reddit
Their tail was 1ft away from hitting the water. Nope.
Odd_Load7249@reddit
They should spin the helicopter blades faster so it can fly at a safer height.
SammeyBarks@reddit
This has gotta be AI, The rotor blades aren't doing anything to the water. I might just be dumb tho

Devil's advocate. Probably filming for a movie. Also helicopters can land on water. They aren't that fragile and these guys look well trained.

It was the Armed Forces day in Spain earlier this week, so this is a demo.
ValBot77fan@reddit
Please explain how that helicopter can land on water. Would love to see you explain that. I’ve flown the BK117/H145 for over 100 hours, btw.

FelisCantabrigiensis@reddit
If they keep flying like that, it's going to be great for Airbus helicopter sales and less great for the crew, because they're going to need a new helicopter after flying it into the water and the crew may not be too happy after that.
