that aesthetic is unmatched. manufacturers today are allergic to putting this much personality into boring banking hardware. industrial design peaked in the seventies and it was downhill from there.
Programmable typewriter. You could have multiple form-feed paper types loaded at the same time.
Saves time when typing in the content of paper forms.
Translated from an internet archive of Olivetti's history site:
The A770 has, in addition to the central memory of 1 Kb, removable auxiliary memories and magnetic tape cartridges of 36 Kb, which contain various application programs supplied (e.g. invoicing, newspaper book, payroll, warehouse, VAT management), which can be loaded and executed by the user with great flexibility. This, along with processing speed, is the biggest novelty compared to traditional accountants that allowed a limited number of mechanically selectable programs.
Of particular complexity is the integrated printing unit, which can handle 4 different types of documents at once. The A770 offers a desk workplace; the basic system can be equipped with magnetic “paperboard” recording and reading units, perforator and paper tape reader, as well as a telephone line government unit (GOL), which allow you to use the machine also as a terminal for real time systems.

What does that table-like thing do?

It's a beautiful machine, especially the keys and controls, but also that it is built into a very handsome desk for 1971.
